Just letting everyone know that when you choose your server, choose the one physically closest to you, not the server closest to your departure airport. In my case, since I live in the UK I choose UK server

Real world pilot and flight instructor here with 2,900 hours logged. I disagree with you with what you said about not bothering to put the current altimeter setting into the altimeter if you don't feel like it. In the hopes that flying a sim airplane might inspire people to take flying lessons in real airplanes, please don't suggest learning bad habits. I would hope people who are using VATSIM want the experience to be as true to life as possible, and following checklists and proper procedures is an important part of flying real airplanes. In real life we never do radio checks first, we simply get the ATIS then call ground using the format: Who you're calling, who you are, where you are, what do you want, and what do you know. For example: "Ground, Skyhawk two two zero Echo Romeo, West FBO, taxi, departing northwest (staying in the pattern, or whatever you want to do), Charlie" By the way, you only need to repeat back instructions, not information, so no need to repeat back the winds for your takeoff clearance.

Some of you guys need to chill...he was just trying to show a simplified basic introductory of using VATSIM, along with several of the integrated mapping tools! I don't think he was in any way promoting haphazard flying!

If there is a ground controller do I request IFR there or do I not need to on IFR?

If there is a ground control frequency but not a clearance delivery freq at the airport you're departing from, then yes, get your IFR clearance from ground.
