Disagree. 454s are plentiful. A gen 6 454 will give a modern valvetrain and you can still use a carb with it if you want to keep it retro. Btw I doubt this is a 396 despite what it says on the label, it's most likely a 402. Chevy changed it around 69-71 ish. They were marketed as 396s but they had 402 ci.

Several tips I learned way back. When starting anything that has a thread, turn it backwards until you feel it fall down into the first thread. Some times you can actually hear it drop in. Do this for every nut bolt or screw and you will never cross threads which is usually what strips threads out. If you struggle with starting bolts on an exhaust header or manifold usually the issue is the weight pulling the lower part towards the block. Grab a pry bar or broom handle and use that to twist the whole thing bottom side towards the wheel to tilt the top where your bolt holes line up better. Second pull one wire off the distributor cap and then move each one one post to the right. After you do that you will be able to rotate the whole distributor clockwise to get it back into time and allow more balanced movement both clockwise and counter clock wise to tune it. No more hitting the intake. If the vacuum is too close to the fire wall do the same thing the other way. That way you can get it to run and have time later to remove and reset the distributor properly. Finally you are not supposed to put any sealer on those aluminum header gaskets. Flat side to the block, dotted puffy side to the header. Good luck and safe travels on your road trip

As a child of the 70’s, I’m pro big-block. I have a gen 1 Camaro. I open the hood, and can actually work on the engine. With my 2019 F 150, I don’t even try. That 396 is the first real big block. Arron’s right, you will absolutely love the performance of a well running 396. Good luck.

Refresh that 396, fuel inject it if you want a bit more consistent operation from it. I think the cool factor of those old trucks jumps up several notches when kept close to original. Nice video. But there was a little mixup in the timeline. At 3:59 when you are about to start working on the car suddenly the brake cylinder is open. But you start working on the engine/ignition. Later in the video you start to work on the brake system and because it is not working you open the main brake cylinder. 😊. Love these old cars. Just big simple stuff that is made to run. And not all this modern stuff full of plastic and sensors and servo's and other stuff to make the engine run cleaner but make it also very very very expensive because all that stuff will break and does cost a fortune.

You don't want to miss the engines cooling system at all. I miss my old 1965 and 1970 Chevy half tons. First off that step repair going inside of the RV I would have added a middle bracing so the floor does not sag when getting into it. Second rebuild the 396, then add a different transmission with overdrive on it. Then put a TBI fuel injection swap on it, this would help put a little more power and some mpg to it too. If and when you decide to rebuild the RV part that would be a nice project to see you both tackle. I wish I had that truck and thats probably what I would do to to refresh it up

@79tazman Жыл бұрын
I would run a compression test on the thing when you get time because you may have a burned valve considering the seats on them heads are not hardened and was meant to run on leaded fuel. I had that happen on a big block truck and when I pulled the head the exhaust valve was sunk into the head and the valve had a big piece burned right off the edge of the valve so I had to sent them to the machine shop for harden seats and new valves.

I am a huge believer in Sea Foam…there is a process that has you suck it through a vacuum line until the engine stops and then let it soak for a period of time (30-60 minutes) and than restart engine…it will smoke out the neighborhood as it burns of all the loosened up deposits…always a believer when you find and application and it works 😊

Just a tip on doing big block exhaust, something I learned working on a 454 in a 4x4 1ton dually, Always, always, always get the stainless steel exhaust donuts, the blue fiber ones are junk and for the manifold gasket, use the aluminum header gasket, it requires some fitting on the head bolts, but since the gasket is so thick, and dent soft material, it will fill gaps if the manifolds are warped any, using the stock gaskets like you showed may not fix the leak, also replace the bolts, the head of the bolts get disfigured over that many years and round off, then is a pain to fix, Love the camper, ain't nothing like old school big block to play.
