I am an executive-level training & development professional, with 25 years experience, a BA in education, and an MS in instructional design.... and I've been building/hotrodding/restoring cars for even longer.... and Mike, I couldn't have done this video series any better myself. I don't even own a Miata (although I'm considering it, along with a few other 2-seater roadsters), but I watched every minute, of every video, simply because of the way it was presented, and my overall interest in the topic. Very.... Very well done. This video series, has literally DOUBLED my interest in Miatas, because I now know how relatively easy a turbo installation is. I'm considering everything from a $10k used Miata, to a Z3 or Z4, up to a near-new Alfa Romeo 4C or late 2000s Lotus Exige.... and the aftermarket support, and available upgrades through you guys, makes my interest in Miatas significantly more than it was before. Obviously the more money I spend on the car, the less I have for projects/upgrades.... so I must admit, the prospect of building an all-out track focused Miata for the same price (or less) than a bone stock 4C or Exige???.... Well.. the idea has merit. I had hoped that you would include a "next step" in the final video. In other words, how to produce more power. Perhaps a fuel injector upgrade? (I noticed you sell them on your website, so why not mention them?).... a full pump upgrade? Other mods required to increase power? You should consider that a compliment, because I actually want to hear you talk some more about the next step in power upgrades... LOL Nevertheless, again.... great job Mike.

In terms of increasing power there are some things to do, with this setup it will produce somewhere around 180whp. If you buy a standalone ECU like a Megasquirt for example, then upgrade the fuel injectors and the fuel pump then you can safely make around 240-250whp with this setup although you can always be unlucky so it's not a 100% guarantee. With this kit you also have to upgrade the clutch and flywheel because otherwise you will be limited to around 170-180whp depending on your specific car. The stock 5 speed can likely handle 250whp for a very long time although the 6 speed is stronger, with a 6 speed you won't be limited with a stock engine. Also there are different differentials in terms of pure strength. In some cars (in the American market only the 1.6 NA got this, not sure about the rest of the world since we got later model 1.6 cars) the differential is very weak, this differential can only handle about 200whp. The other differentials can handle around 300-350whp. The stock engine can't handle this anyway so if you have one of the stronger diffs then you'll most be good with a stock engine, although some people can be really unlucky and if the car wasn't maintained well then drivetrain parts can always fail. You can check out the videos that Donut Media made about making sure your engine is safe to turbo, they ended up buying a CX racing turbo kit but if you can afford it then I would recommend the Flyin Miata kit, they actually wanted to buy the FM kit but it wasn't in stock and they needed to make their episodes about turbocharging

The way you explain how everything goes together like notifying that you used thread paste, copper grease, loctite, oil, every time you do it probably really helps the forgetful people (me). I have enjoyed watching the series very much and am in awe of a private owner who can install this kit without having a nervous breakdown. The explanations and demonstrations are very clear and the whole production is very professional. Mike is an awesome presenter. I have only one question to ask: When you crank the motor to prime the lubrication system why don't you do it with the spark plugs out? There would be far less stress on the starter motor and less heat generated. The oil would be able to pump the oil a lot more effectively. I live at 7100' just north of Colorado Springs and could be very tempted by a nice, clean turbocharged Miata.

Hi Mike, I really enjoyed watching your series on FM Stage 1 Turbo install. I've been a long time Miata fan (on my 4th). I still remember the first one I saw bought by a co-worker new, in 1989. I have a question. What brand are the gas struts on the hood? They look to be much smaller than others I've seen and appear very neatly installed (factory-like). Current Miata: "2004 MSM Velocity Red Mica"

So you only advance the timing once you've maxed out the wastegate washers and you're still running 10-11:1 AFR's, correct? Is that what you meant by "enough octane"?

I am wondering how long it would take an average Miata owner to install this kit? 10 part video series with an average 1 hour video times 2 for what was not on the videos come to a long weekend; is that about right?

It depends on how fast you work. A long weekend is certainly possible especially if you have friends to help, but it's probably a good idea to have a backup plan in case it's not ready to take you to work on Monday morning. Mike spends a lot of time chatting in the video but he's also done this before!

Concerning the voodoo box. Does the MSPNP2 negate the need for the voodoo box or do they work side-by-side? A clutch-related question, ...My 1996 has a relatively new (stock) clutch in...will it handle the power or will it be necessary to get the upgraded clutch?

A full programmable ECU like the MSPNP2 negates the need for the Voodoo Box because it allows you to program the car specifically for boost. We don't recommend you run them both. We did another video on the Voodoo Box if you'd like to learn more about that product. As for your clutch - the Stage 1 turbo is right at the limit of the holding capacity of the stock clutch. It's quite likely it will slip, even if brand new.

The current FM Stage 1 Turbo kit EGR tube does not fit my 2001 NB Miata. Even without a coolant reroute, it does not fit. Anyone else have this issue?

Same issue. I cant get the EGR to fit on my 96 NA. I bent it around so much trying to get it to fit i snapped the flange on the intake manifold side🙄. Ordered another EGR hoping mine was one that was not to spec.

Hi, I have a mazdaspeed miata and Im planing on changing the ecu . What are safe torque levels . I have read that any more then 220ftlb is a bad idea. Thank you. I love the channel I have learnt so much👍

If you have a stock Mazdaspeed turbo, it's not torque levels that will be your limitation. It's the ability of the turbo to move air.

We like Water Wetter for cars that don't see freezing conditions, yes. It's actually required for a number of race series.

How come you don’t provide a threaded wastegate actuator rod? Wouldn’t that allow for a greater and easier adjustment of preload? Do the washers just make it easier to say “I did this with 1 washer, and 2 washers did this”?

We have used them in the past. This particular actuator is a good fit to the GT2560 which is why we use it. Once you've set the base boost, you don't have to mess with it again so the benefits of a threaded rod are fairly short-lived.

You do not. The Stage 1 kit comes with our Voodoo Box, which takes care of fuel control and allows it to be completely emissions legal.

A reroute is not a necessary part of a turbo install. For cars that will see very hard use and will stress the cooling system, certainly. But since it's more of an upgrade than a requirement, it's not part of this video series.
