Several years ago my ski club and myself were trying to fly over from Denver to Aspen airport on an un-name airline. The first two flights attempted to get in but couldn't because of minimums and turbulence. We were about to give up and get rooms when one last flight became available. The baggage guys were getting used to seeing us so we asked what were the chances we would get into Aspen on this last flight. They laughed and said 100%. We asked why was that and they said the pilot of this flight just recently got out of the navy and was quite proficient at landing twin turbos on moving air strips. He was right, zero flare and no bounce.

I had to read about this behemoth...80 ft wingspan, 57 ft long. Very few people in the world can do what he and the copilot are doing. A confident and humble pilot who doesn’t mind showing us when he doesn’t stick the first landing. He’s a smart one too!

In my opinion you are one of the best pilots flying! I couldn't even imagine the pressure you were under after 2 wave offs. You forgot all that and landed safely. Wave offs will only bring out the character in a person and you my friend are amazing with those deep hidden qualities you posse. I would fly with you any day!

My thought exactly! You could see the tension before the first attempt in cockpit, but then pretty much no reaction after the first and even second missed landing. That is some cool-under-pressure flying!

Going around is a possibility and option for every landing and should be practiced. Looks like he chose a real short approach for the challenge of it, accepting the increased probability of a go-around. Gotta keep training. The level they fly at is a perishable skill.

A friend of mine described it like this: "There are two pilots flying, even in a single seat. One of them is betting his life he will catch the wire and is fully committed to it. The other is Betting his life he will miss the wire and is fully committed to a go around/bolter. They are both in charge and one of them will be right."

I once had to land an A380 on an aircraft carrier, obviously with no tail hook, we also had to go around three times before we could land the thing, but that was actually only because a passenger was refusing to stow his tray table. Taking off was another matter altogether, but hey, it's not about me !!

Eons and eons ago I used to fly small planes (Cessna 150s and 152s) out of a very small, very rural airport. I used to think that trying to put that tiny plane down on a 2950' x 50' runway was extremely difficult. If I remember correctly the final approach speed was around 55 knots and that's slower than even my grandma drove. My perception of the level of difficulty involved in that compared to this changed dramatically when I started seeing vids like this. Thanks for what you do!

My thoughts exactly. I learned to fly on a Cessna 150 with 3,000 ft of runway available which is, of course, more than sufficient if you do it right. But seeing this, I have nothing but admiration for the state of stick-and-rudder capabilty of the pilots.

3 000 ft used to be considered a comfortable size for a DC-3 to operate from.

If you think 3,000' is tight for a little Cessna... Seriously, 2,400' is comfortable for even a 172. If it wasn't hot and I wasn't heavy, I think putting a 152 down on 1,500' would be relatively easy. But landing on a carrier... nope, nope, and nope. I can put 'er down on the numbers, but the numbers I land on don't move.

Hey Rob. Retired Navy air traffic controller here. Was stationed aboard USS Ranger (way before your time). Love watching all your videos. Never got to fly in the C-2. I did a deck run on a C-1, which scared the crap out of me. Also had the opportunity to do a trap in a US-3 and 2 cat shots on same aircraft. Again, great job! Thank you for serving!

This is so satisfying seeing the AoA lights on the dash. I used to work on those and they where controlled by a little motor (DC I think but it's been 15+ years) and some cams on the shaft that would depress 5 microswitches.

I flew Corsairs and then Hornets on the East Coast. A day trap was like going to the amusement park for a fun ticket ride. I finished with 467 traps on mainly east coast carriers. Thanks for sharing.

Its touch down full power until you feel the resistance of the cables or get the signal from the deck crew I believe

For E-2s and C-2s, we DO NOT go full power in the wires. If we did, we would never catch them, because of the instantaneous power from the turboprops. But we also don’t go idle, that could literately be deadly. We fight the ball the whole way down until touchdown. So basically we are in a power-high, descent, controlled crash. And we have to have enough energy on the bird to be able to fly the ball all the way until tough down. Even if you a high ball, you don’t go idle, but rather you give several smaller power boosts, to keep the plane energized as you try and bring it down. It’s really a crazy concept. We ONLY go idle once we get the ‘throttle back signal’ from a guy on deck. You see me look to my right for him after touchdown. Great question!

It seems to me that any bolter is a waste of gas military efficiency and time. There's got to be a better way that an aircraft can be captured. How about replacing reverse polarity magnets along the side of an aircraft and if it touches down anywhere in a long strip it automatically comes to a stop. I'm just trying to think of different ideas than wires in a hook

@@cogitoergosum1474 I'm no aircraft expert, but it seems that the magnetic field strength required to stop an aircraft moving that fast would be insanely high, requiring an insane amount of current. Attaching magnets large enough to actually be useful would not only affect the plane's radar cross section, but also cause increased fuel usage during the entirety of the flight. I doubt the cost of occasional extra fuel usage due to a bolter would outweigh the cost and fuel usage of a magnetic system.

The toughest job in the world. Landing on a moving target with only a little room to catch a wire to trap! And then a controlled crash at the end. Badass! And Naval Aviators are the only ones in the world that have to do it day and night. Why the wings are GOLD people! Watching other videos of C2 and E2 landings the amount of corrections on the yoke and throttle is crazy. Plus no HUD symbology to assist with landing. Major respect especially for night traps.

When I was an Air Force pilot, several of us spent a few days on the Saratoga (I think, it was almost 50 years ago). We were in “pri-fly” watching some reservists from JAX doing night quals. As I remember, I think they were A-4’s and one pilot had trouble getting aboard and had just gotten his second wave off. I think it was the LSO asked the Air Boss what he wanted to do and after a millisecond, the Air Boss responded in a loud commanding voice, “SEND HIM TO THE BEACH.” That was the end of the discussion. The Navy does not tolerate poor performance!

I have to thank you and your brethren for taking those beasts out to the carriers. I was on the Abraham Lincoln in '93 when we were diverted from a planned stop in Dubai to just off the coast of Somalia. Our (usually daily, announced over the 1MC whenever the incoming pilot would call the ball - if you have to deploy for 6 months at a time, do it on a carrier) mail bounced from Dubai to Bahrain, to who-knows-where; trying to figure out where we were actually located in the world, and how to catch up with us. It had been probably two weeks since hearing "120 pounds of mail, on the ball" or something similar. I remember hearing something along the lines of "2700 pounds of mail, on the ball". We had been told it was coming, because every TV on the mess decks, and in every office and lounge was tuned to the flight deck cameras, and everybody who wasn't on watch was cheering for that giant beast with the unique tail that was literally bringing us over a TON of mail. That mail call included a care package with homemade fudge in it. Seeing that plane, especially nose first from a low angle, always makes smile from that day forward.

Somedays you just are not in the groove. I drove semis for 17 years and there were some days it took a few tries to get backed into a dock. Even though I had done it for 17 years and was even a yard jockey for a year.

My Dad was a naval aviator, VS-38 early Vietnam War. Later he got his private pilot's license and we used to fly with a neighbor who had a Cessna 172. One time the owner said to my Dad, "You land this time, like it was on a carrier." Of course there were no arresting wires, but he did a "carrier break", came around and landed, smoothly, I guess much faster than typical for 172 (I was a kid, it was just Dad flying). The owner was astonished and was tightly gripping his harness the whole time. I don't know why, but watching carrier landings is very relaxing for me. It's like flying with Dad again.

I've watched many F-4 Phantom landings from behind on a Plane guard Tin Can, and often wondered how it would look landing on a carrier. Thanks for the video.

The humanity of the pilot is striking. It takes everything he's got to make what looks like a routine landing from the outside. It is impressive that no matter how many times he has done this before he uses controlled breaths & moves to the edge of his seat. That illustrates how mortally risky the action is.

I would have gone into a holding pattern and used the toilet. Let the copilot sweat it out a little more just for some fun. I'll bet you guys still talk about this one over beers. My dad would have loved to have seen this. Two years in WWII and 20 years in the reserves as a CPO. I love the Navy. Thanks for your service.

I worked with a Radiologist that flew F-4 (if I remember right) in Vietnam. Man he had stories that would make your teeth sweat. He had a great stash. Rival any cowboy I ever dated!

Awesome! Looks like you caught the 4 wire at the end there. I can't imagine what it's like to do this. I spent some time trolling at 50 knots in a Piper cub operating off of a grass strip, but it lacked the flair of carriers, moustaches, and military might. Thanks for the vid.

I am imagining that right seat man is giving you some type of “ribbing” about the go around and the wave off…. That’s gotta be the best feeling in the world. Possibly broken bones, burned, shot, or at a minimum exhausted, nowhere to go but into the ice cold water, pitch black, struggling to find a moving airport floating on an endless ocean and you manage to get your aircraft back home on the deck. Brilliant.

It's a very SLOW aircraft. Look up it's stats and what other pilots say if you don't want my word for it. It's by FAR the EASIEST plane to land on the boat. Again, BY FAR.

I mean hey, carriers, or at least American carriers, are designed specifically for instances like this. No shame on the pilot, landing on a carrier is tough, and he ultimately got it down in one piece.

The wave off may not have been the Pilot's fault, could have been a foul deck, ship was turning, etc.

@@marcs990 The second approach, if you look to the left of the centerline you can see the Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System lights flash red, telling the Pilot to abandon his attempt and wave off. As far as the initial approach, he touched down just passed the number 4 wire. Can't say for sure without seeing if his hook was down whether it was a deliberate touch and go, but even on a planned T & G, Carrier Pilots still shoot for the sweet spot for touch down, if that was the case. Not a critique of the Pilots C-2 (COD) skills. Any number of variables could can cause one to be long on his touch down, rising and falling of the deck, wind gusts, etc. Greyhound Drivers are highly skilled at Carrier Ops. I spent quite a few years onboard various CVN's while serving.

Easy to miss and harder to catch! Aircraft carriers are always pitching and rolling in the ocean. Only three catch lines on the strip, which is why all pilots landing on carriers are at full throttle when landing so they can take back off and go again! This is the most difficult for any pilot. And wind conditions and weather and let's not forget night time! These guys are AWESOME!

@@brodricj3023 yeah it will skip over the wires sometimes, his first attempt looked like he had a high ball from the cameras POV. I don't know why he got a wave off on the 2nd pass looked good to me.

It wasn’t a touch and go... the hook just skipped over the wires. But if you were doing a proper touch and go, you would just out the hook up for that pass.

I've tried this on various flight sims. It's hard. I'm even more amazed how basically pegged the AOA indicator is (especially on short final). I don't know how you set up such a stable approach on-speed so quickly

i play game wings over vietnam and there is option to land on carrier, but there is no any help from outside , just aoa, but then can not see the deck , so i go high with nose down to see deck, and low leveling just before touch down, everything is extended and lowered down , power on 0 , 140-180kts approach speed for f-4

Fly the airplane with trim to the sight picture.. It’ll be pretty stable if you do that.

Putting anything down on the deck requires superior skill, esp. on the psych side after a bolter. This guy did well.
