It is because the cells in their leaves are light sensitive just like other plants, so when the spider sits there for long enough the cells realize they aren't getting any light and being touched. Plants have nerves, or more accurately a facsimile of them.

Fun fact about spiders: it looks like they aren’t moving because we’re just so much bugger than they are, but they shift/wiggle their legs slightly here and there to identify the surrounding environment. I think you can see the spider slightly shift its position just before the trap closes. It may have just moved the tiniest bit, and just so happened to bump the trigger hair(s) enough to finally close. EDIT: it’s also possible in my head that it shifted its blood around and the vibration of it happened to trigger a hair. But that’s just me being extra.

While the three hairs are the primary triggers for the rapid closure, Venus flytraps can also respond to other stimuli, like pressure or movement on the trap. This means they might close if something heavy sits on them, even if it doesn’t trigger the hairs. The hairs primarily help ensure a quick response to fast-moving prey, but the plant is adaptable and can sense other cues as well.

As stated in the video, the plant grows on the outer side to close. It has to grow on the inner side to open. After a couple of closes, it has to go through a few rounds of mitosis to prepare for another close. The spider probably triggered the hairs when the plant didn't have the ability to close. When it had regained the ability, it closed. It seems to close quite slowly at the end, which would be consistent with this hypothesis.

As the ex smart friend, I would have to say it's a form of geotropism, and that it can most likely feel that that part of itself is more affected by gravity, or that the spider was touching a trigger hair, but not moving it.

Still, if the spider was completely still, that should’ve happened much earlier than 20 minutes.
@Chiillxer10 ай бұрын
@@daani1733why should it happen faster? The trap is designed to close at a certein threshhold of stimuli. One Single stimulus can exceed the threshhold. But also very small stimuli can be accumulated to exceed the threshhold.
@daani173310 ай бұрын
@@Chiillxer But that would indicate that the spider wasn’t completely still, it was continuously moving, albeit very slightly. My question simply was that if the spider was completely still, that would’ve either happened much earlier or never, because the variables which can cause the leaf to shut would have always stayed the same. A better, shorter answer to my question would’ve been “well, you were incorrect to think that the spider was completely still, because it wasn’t. It was slightly, but continuously moving which eventually added up causing the leaf to trap it.” You can argue that the spider itself wasn’t moving, rather the gravity was moving it, but physically that still means that the spider was in a state of motion, which means it was moving.

Since Venus Flytraps need a prey to trigger two separate of their traps' trigger hairs subsequently within an interval of approximately 20s and the spider obviously didn't move at all, I would suspect the following scenario: Though it doesn't seem like it, the animal is still moving its legs, pedipalps and abdomen slightly. Additionally, it sits right on top of the hairs which could be bent due to this position. It doesn't take much stimulation to trigger these hairs so the minimal movements could have been enough action potential. Additionally, the dragline the spider pulls may be another potential trigger source. It can be seen to the right and is apparently under tension. If it got entangled or attached to one of the hairs, it might be an actuation cause without the spider even moving itself.

They use special hairs, feet wiggles, or vibrations to observe surroundings, as their eyesight is actually quite bad. Edit: I’m talking about the spider!! Edit: jumping spiders, and brown recluse have good eyesight. Yet another.. edit: also this species of fly trap contains special sensory cells, detecting light, and sound waves using stimulus motion ( look above ) To make the decision to close the trap! If the trap cannot get a good stimulus wave, it might use reaction, close anyways, or use special lighting cells to detect how much light and shadows are on the plant ( this might not work.. because they are in shadows a lot )

Venus fly traps function via a chemical change in the base of the leaves, which are held under tension. This chemical change occurs gradually whenever the trigger hairs receive a certain amount of stimulation. So my guess is that having the spider parked on top of the trigger hairs is providing a very slow amount of trigger hair stimulation. Thus, the trap leaf eventually broke tension and closed.

Venus fly traps generally take liquid into account and do not trigger if liquid is run through. It’s how they avoid opening and closing multiple times during rain. No what happened is that the person recording tapped on the pot causing it to move shifting the spider to trigger the hair

Spiders actually make very quick movements that are hard to see with the naked eye, and they do this so they can survey their area since they have little to no vision so the spider hit one of the trigger hairs with its quick leg movements while it was surveying its surroundings

I think that maybe the spider triggered the hairs when it entered the last trap but the plant had already expended most of its energy from closing the others so it took a long time to slowly feed enough energy to close. I figure this because I know that these plants often die because they expend all their energy closing empty traps.
@TKayCO9 ай бұрын
I heard they die from false closes because they end up digesting themselves as nothing is inside to be digested. This was written on a sign in the bush saying not to touch the flytraps.

Could it be chemically sensing ("smelling") the spider? After the trap closes, it must have some chemical sensor to evaluate if it caught food or just dirt, without first producing digestive fluid. That same sensor must also be connected to the closing mechanism, as it has to tell the trap to remain shut. It would also likely be a slowly acting sensor. So, when the spider volunteers to sit still for 20 minutes, the plant might "smell" that it caught something and suddenly remember to keep its mouth closed.

Good guess, but I'm fairly sure the opening mechanism is if the object inside does not continue to trigger any more hairs once caught. Normal prey would struggle, while leaves or rocks would not.

@EMM5759 ай бұрын
The plant can’t sense heat to that degree, even if it could it wouldn’t close, if it did it would close with every little heat from the sun or wvr, and you are correct no living thing can be perfectly still, really nothing can, even at absolute zero, but most likely scenario it landed on a trigger hair just enough to the point where all it needed was a tiny twitch to close
@Urkki249 ай бұрын
My conclusion was that you can see the spider leaving a thin thread of web behind it and the web actived the trap. You can see it moving a little before the trap catches it.

The spider forced most of the opened ones to close, if all of them closed with no food the plant could die from using too much energy on wasted captures.
