I'm pretty sure it was defending a food resource. Wasps don't have the cognitive ability to defend each other in such a way or even *know* the dangers of the venus fly trap. They do however respond instinctively to external stimuli and it's likely that the wasps jumping on and off the plant is due to instinct. In this situation though the wasp is definitely just attacking the other as asshole wasps do.

These plants are doing God's work Fun fact: when an insect triggers one of the hairs and it starts to close, If it escapes or was never actually grabbed then it doesn't feel it anymore it'll open back up and a couple of minutes to an hour I think. It's only if it continues to feel it that it seals up and starts to digest.

Still assume the mandibals could do some damage. I know some bugs were too much for the leaves and they would not make it through the whole process.

I HATE Yellowjackets. I was stung by 4 at the same time on the top of my hand. I kept smacking the heck out of them and they would not die nor stop stinging me. It's amazingly cool how the fly traps have developed two sensor hairs in the middle of each leaf. Both sensors need to be touched to activate the trap, cutting down on the number of missed attempts when the wasp is only half in.

Man, did they enjoy the environment. They have taken over in many places. Killed stock, attacked people, absolute pests they are. A few years back at a farm I visit I was stroking the donkeys and talking to a staff member, I was with a friend and none of us heard or saw a wasp anywhere nearby, I felt one though right in my leg it stung me. I called to the wasp oi that was an unprovoked attack. Just got a venus flytrap today. It’s just a tiny little baby runt now but it’ll grow. One trap is already shut. So obviously it’s had a meal already.

My strangest experience was meeting a nice wasp, she was mostly black with yellow wings, antenna, and arms, she was on a wall surrounded by a bunch of school kids that were all bugging her, like pushing her with a pencil and blowing on her, but she did nothing, she calmly stood there, walking around on the wall. Sometimes I see wasps like that on my window, and I like to imagine that she's visiting me to thank me for not bugging her like the other kids.

I like wasps. They seem like intelligent creatures and they also have mandibles so im pretty sure at least 2 of those wasps could just chew their way out. Perhaps with persistent wiggling or if one of its buddies helps him out, wasp 3 could get into a position to free himself. People only hate them because they sting, but really it doesn't hurt that much, and they use logical reasoning to determine whether they should sting you, so if you just leave them alone, they'll leave you alone. But perhaps my respect for wasps is biased as i am allergic and could die if i was stung a few times at once.

Crazy to me how many people hate wasps. They're important to the ecosystem and also hunt plant destroying bugs. Wasps are only aggressive when threatened. Wasps frequently visit our garden and they've sat down on me numerous times. They are entirely calm and friendly. Nothing will happen if you don't try to kill them or slap them away with your arms.

They are able to chew wood, which I often see them do (they build their nests from chewed wood). So I thought the same, why don't they chew their way out? Maybe panic prevents them from doing anything useful to get out. 🤔

1) Maybe they do chew eventually their way out 2) Maybe their instinct is to use their sting, which is a much better weapon against a large animal - although I’m guessing a plant is completely immune
