A new series of videos for those that are new to fly tying, to accompany my new book, 'fly tying for beginners' out later this year. Here I am showing techniques that may look challenging, but are totally achievable with a little patience and practice. I have slowed down the tying and explain every step in detail. If you are struggling, and have a question, post it in the comments box below, and I will try and help. Good luck!

A great fly pattern. I like the caddis green dubbing. Found it worked best around my area. Well tied.

You are a true artist at work. I recently purchased your book and I loved it and must admit it was breathtaking with so many pictures and easy QR code to get to the video. You can really see the amount of work you put into it. Then I learned just yesterday that you did all the photos yourself.. I truly appreciate you teaching us your wonderful skills. Cheers from the US.

this the way I have tied my elk caddis for about 40 years. It's Randall Kaufmann style, easy to tie and pretty strong. well done

It’s just incredible how well you can work with all fly tying materials !! 😉👌👍 (sorry if the structure of my sentence isn’t good 😬) I’m French *😅

Well, what you said is fine, I am teaching myself Russian and I just started a couple of weeks ago teaching myself, French. You can tie the fly without hackle at all, for some hackle is a major expense. I fish these both ways. You will catch fish. Access to good instruction was not always the case, in many ways we are living in a golden age.

Perfect elk hair. I still struggle keeping it all on top a little. Getting alot better but I still tend to twist a little on tk the far side. You make it look so easy Barry. Bravo

Thank you sir, so good partern, also for bass in my area. Unfortunately I often cut the elk hair with my thread, maybe my skin is to old and dry up or i put to much pressure on my thread. practice, practice :) is there a rule of thumb to place the hackle? I like the way you do it vertically, but do you always put the shiny side of the hackle looking up front or revers. Some tyers seem to give a lot of importance to this aspect. did that do differences? have a good day

Great fly. Will most of the patterns in your forthcoming beginners book be different from those in your ‘techniques’ book?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Len, Thanks. They are all different. But in the beginners book I focus on learning basic techniques, proportions etc, that when practiced and perfected become the advanced techniques. There are tyers at all levels that would also benefit from it.

Hi Barry what colour of elk hair can I use?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 ай бұрын
Traditionally it's bleached, as here but you can use natural. But I guess that there is nothing stopping you using any colour whatsoever!
