If you're going on a trip what do you carry with you? All sorts of things can happen far from home. FlyWire takes a look at a Fly Away Kit for the Beechcraft Bonanza.
FlyWire is about exploring flight and the freedom this incredible experience brings us on a personal level. Flying has always captured the imagination and excitement of living life to its fullest. Hi, I'm Scott Perdue. In a former life I flew the F-4 and F-15E, more recently I retired from a major airline. I've written for several aviation magazines over the years, was a consultant for RAND, the USAF, Navy, NASA as well as few others, wrote a military thriller- 'Pale Moon Rising' (still on Kindle). But mostly I like flying, or teaching flying. Some of the most fun I had was with Tom Gresham on a TV show called 'Wings to Adventure". We flew lots of different airplanes all over the country. Now with FlyWire I want to showcase the fun in flying, share the joy and freedom of flight and explore the world with you. Make sure you subscribe if you want to go along for the ride!

Great kit. I also carry a pair of spare tow pins in case ground crew breaks mine and a new sparkplug with gasket. Also, duct tape, zip ties, disposable latex gloves, and vice grips. Knock on wood, the A36 has NEVER left me stranded, so I hope I am in good graces with the Trim Gods. The tire/tube combo MAY sound crazy but some old gray-haired ferry pilots told me that this may be the most important piece. You will likely find a mechanic with a jack on any airport you land but the chances of him having a tire or tube are usually slim. So, I also try to take a tube/tire on flight when I know I may be flying to desolate airport.

I carry the same kind of scissor jack but it was out of a Nissan 300ZX and is made of aluminum, very light, found it at a junk yard.

Love your channel! This 2 year old video just popped up. I have multiple fly away kits depending on the mission but one always-carry item is the micro battery (with the same ground plug adapter). My IO 520 is very susceptible to hot starts as you know. Does the A36 have the reverse polarity relay like a 185? I find that any normal battery will connect but these “smart” micro batteries will not supply power without the relay closing, which won’t happen without power. A catch 22 that no one on any forums has figured out as far as I can see. Thoughts?

I had a valve stem go bad on my Beech 36 nose tire while cross country staying overnight at relatively remote Angwin-Parrett Field. After landing, refueling and parking late one afternoon, I arrived the next morning at 7am to find the flat nose tire. No signs of puncture. When I manually pumped the tire (bicycle pump in my cross-country bag), I realized the valve stem was bad. Luckily I had a valve stem removal tool and a spare valve stem, so I did not need to even jack up the aircraft. However, my 7am departure turned out to be a 9:45am departure. I was prepared with the appropriate tools and spares, but I am slow to troubleshoot and even slower operating hand tools!

Scott, you mention having some weight in the back gives you a little more speed and that the airplane flies better. I know first hand the latter is true! Flying the A36 with 2 adults in the front feels like somebody loaded bricks into the nosewheel compartment. Do you know, or are there any resources out there, what CG location is a general target for optimum?
@FlyWirescottperdue
@FlyWirescottperdue 4 жыл бұрын
Sam- I don't know of a resource. I suggest trying it out with your airplane to see. Approach it gradually and keep notes. Use the "Bonanza Performance" App to compute your POH numbers... it's great!

Have to hav a Tow Pin. I was told when I first bought my Bonanza to always have a spare because you will need it, and I did.

@@FlyWirescottperdue It is actually not for if you break it, it is for the 20-year-old at the FBO towing your plane. I think I heard at a BPPP clinic that the plane is grounded with a broken pin. I understand we have a mutual friend in Butch.

Great kit but do you ever fly with six people and if yes then what do you leave out of your kit if anything?
@FlyWirescottperdue
@FlyWirescottperdue 4 жыл бұрын
I've only flown the airplane twice with the rear seats in it. For me its a 4 place airplane. If you fly 6 folks, then you have to offload payload and/or fuel.

Question? Do You carry wheel chocks with You? also what about tie down ropes? Great videos, thanx for sharing your aviation knowledge :o)
@FlyWirescottperdue
@FlyWirescottperdue 5 жыл бұрын
Dave I have a set of 'The Claw' tiedowns for places like Oshkosh. I also have a small set of chocks, but they're in the other plane's kit. For most places I use the chocks that are there or not at all. The parking brake on the Bo is excellent. For the most part I rely on Tie Down ropes to be where I'm going and mostly am not disappointed! Thanks for watching!

Good idea being prepared for a flat. In my Skywagon I carry a spare main tube and a built up tailwheel. The tailwheel can be the bigger issue, although breaking the bead loose on the mains to change or repair the tube can be a problem, so I bought this: www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/topages/beadbuster.php?clickkey=154698 Can’t imagine trying to break the bead loose when suffering a flat while remote in the boonies. Obviously, I also carry a jack and a homemade jacking pad for the gear leg. My survival kit and tool kit weigh 100#, but like you I like to be prepared, especially when flying the backcountry. My 185 has just over a 1700# useful load and flies better with the CG farther aft, so why not be prepared?
