Just discovered your channel last week, been binging your videos ever since. You break down the game in a way that I understand; despite having 5,000 hours in the game since 2013, you have completely changed the way I look these features. My results have improved dramatically from your advice, thank you!

Thank you and appreciate your time and effort to make FM videos to benefit the FM community. All of your videos have been a great help to me in playing FM17.

This is an amazing series Dalgit. Have covered this again for FM20 or FN21, or is this information still relevant today?

What duty is best for wide defenders that are lacking in pace and dribbling? One of the teams I was thinking of playing has this issue. Also- there are no good wide midfielders in the team.

Hi Rashidi!! I'm having a issue with my team Portsmouth, as i'm finding that the amount of shots off target unrealistic..in one game i have more than 20 shots most of them off target and miss lot of chances. i even change my player instructions shoot less often aswell and there miss the chances to score. kindly advise me on this. thank you.

I really appreciate your videos. Do you find there are any attributes that might be overrated in your experience? Also, what do you look from in terms of your youth players (especially your youth intake)?

Is right to focus first on mental attributes for youth player than physical?

Currently decisions is the single most overrated attribute in the game. In fact in testing a team with low decisions have shown to decisively beat identical teams with high decisions (see link). On from that positioning and marking have been shown to be some of the weaker stats, acceleration, first touch and anticipation are also surprisingly weak. Tackling, crossing, vision and pace were also shown to be fairly poor. See strikerless.com/2017/12/16/fm18-labs-we-need-to-talk-about-decisions/ for more information. However with that said, some stats may be good for some positions and not others. A stat like positioning might only have tested poorly because its only being used by a few roles whilst work rate may have performed well because it is used by every role. Whilst there are certainly some strong attributes used by only a few positions, there may be other explanations as to why they had a strong effect. For example a 20 dribbling team against 10 tackling players performed exceptionally, however in a more realistic example we might see 18 dribbling against 15 tackling defenders and their ability to waltz past all defenders suddenly becomes dramatically weaker. The testing was done in a league of full 10 stats for each player (identical teams and staff) with the attribute mentioned raised to 20 for each player. Additional testing was done on decisions with a full league of 10 stats and each team given a different decisions value from 1 to 20, there was a strong correlation with high decisions equalling poor performance. This test was done because in the initial test decisions fell so incredibly far below all other stats, and indeed it turned out to be a poor choice. So with all that said I will personally be taking work rate as a strong attribute. I also regard passing as a strong attribute. Off the ball was tested as medium, but its one I've personally found good results with. Heading and Jumping have also performed well. Generally mentals seem to perform well though that may be due to both affecting every position. Decisions is the stat to avoid. Anticipation was surprisingly poor. Acceleration and pace were mediocre at best, along with balance and agility. These were very highly regarded stats in the past and it seems like they may have been neutered in FM18. Beyond that the classic defending stats seemed to perform badly too though I still wonder if this is more due to the test. I will personally consider them important for the back row but significantly less of a factor in midfielders and forwards. After consideration a midfielder hardly needs 20 tackling to dispossess a mediocre dribbler, and marking is less of an issue against a support midfielder making no runs. As for youth intake, I don't feel confident answering. I'm certainly no expert at the game and I don't have the data to show things properly. I imagine it would depend on which stats are the most difficult to build, so work rate and even natural fitness would be two decent stats to consider but personally I aim more for potential ability above anything else. But again take my thoughts with a pinch of salt here.

I would like to see this in practice. Say take a League One club on day one and show how you evaluate each player and then place them into shape and decide on role and duty for them. And maybe why you would go with one shape over another as every team would be different 16:10 my problem. Lol

I decide shape based on formation

BusttheNet I guess I don't understand the difference between tactic, shape and formation. I consider all three of those to be like a 4-3-3.
