I’m a tube amp guy and looking into getting an FM9 for the flexibility and tube tone onstage. Question: Is it possible for you to do a live video to show what stage sound you get with an amp! Thank you😊 Great video!!!

Wondering if you have recommendations when the backline is a Deluxe Reverb that doesn't have a Mid control? I can't stress how much these videos have helped me with my live sound!

@RoshRoslin

I use them "just in case". The black end goes in the fractal, the other end into a quarter inch input. Since this was a backline amp, I wasn't sure if there would be a grounding issue or not. I err on the side of caution

Thanks Rosh. Another great video. When would you use the Filter Block as a boost as opposed to for example increasing the level of just the LEAD Scene? I assume that to use it at will in any scene you would need to assign it to an external switch?
@RoshRoslin
@RoshRoslin Жыл бұрын
You can do either. I'm in the habit of using the filter block because I also have a "volume boost" switch to be able to make any sound I am currently playing louder by about 3-5 db., This helps if you have a part you want to stick out for a small section like a lead bit, or If i'm splitting a humbucker to a single coil

Hi Rosh, great video, just like to know if sum L & R is better than copy L& R for output 3 when output 1 & 2 is stereo
@RoshRoslin
@RoshRoslin Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't use SUM L+R for a stereo signal summed to mono unless you are absolutely confident nothing in your signal path is phase cancelling (like the 2290 delay)

Hey Rosh - super useful! I have the same setup needs. Question I have is why the QSC? The in ears I have completely block out the world! I see similar fractal users (Neal Schon, Def Leppard, etc) using back line amps, but they’d have to be screaming to penetrate the in ears. Is that right?? Thanks a million Rosh. Going to incorporate your output scheme!

Even when using IEM I prefer some stage volume for a couple reasons 1) For the rest of the band to get some ambient guitar. If the guitar is only coming out of the mains, it may difficult for other members to hear i they aren't on IEM. Many situations, I am the only one using IEMs 2) There is acoustic coupling with an electric guitar that makes the guitar feel and sound better. Especially if trying to get natural feedback as well as resonance with the guitar 3) In case the IEMs fail for any reason, I can just pull them out of my ears and use stage wedges to get through the gig

Thanks for the reply. Also found the very pricey ASI ones. Advantage is that you can mix in how much ambience you want, not passive. Disadvantage is wearing two packs and another app to master. Do you feel the Westones give you enough guitar stage amp in your ears?

Hey Rosh, first of all many thx for your great videos. I‘m just before switching from GT-1000 to FM9 and can’t wait to have this awesome unit here ;-). A general question to this setup: why do you use a separate wedge in addition to your IEM? Does it bring more quality to your stage sound other than using just the IEM? Same for the backline amp. FOH get‘s your direct signal from the FM9, so why using an additional amp? Appreciate your response 🙂
@RoshRoslin
@RoshRoslin Жыл бұрын
The stage volume lets your guitar interact acoustically with the pickups and sound coming from the amp and/or stage wedge. The response of the guitar is much different without this acoustic interaction. For example, play your electric guitar with just headphones only. Then add some volume to an external sound source (stage wedge, amp or studio monitors) and you'll notice the difference right away

Will the FM9 switch the channel of the tube amp with the block chain? I use an Engl Fireball 100. If you wanted the distortion from your tube amp but effects from the fm9 or switch to a clean channel with effects or even a clean channel with an amp sim?
@RoshRoslin

If your amp is midi enabled, yes, you can switch channels. If not, you'll need a device that can switch a relay and also take midi, like the suhr or mesa boogie switchers.

Hey Rosh, can I use a OD pedal in the FM9 loop then go into a stereo delay , in the loop as well and still keep the stereo spread?
@RoshRoslin
@RoshRoslin Жыл бұрын
Yes, just make sure the OD pedal goes first in the loop chain. Also make sure nothing is summing the stereo field down to mono after the stereo delay goes back into the FM9 from the loop

Hey Juan, I'll be making a setup video for this in the near future. I would go Mono on everything in the outputs. Make sure output 1 has cabinet simulation, Out 2 has no cab simulition Then Out 1 L goes to Mixer Out 1 R goes to In Ear Monitors. OUt 2 L goes to tube amp.

when you use a amp model with out ir does that make the tube amp sound weird since the tube amp has it own preamp.

Thats why you run into the FX loop, it bypasses the preamp section of a tube amp.

Curious to know about the Output Modes.... you have all set to Copy L>R.... generally would the Output 1 or 2 be stereo (for lush in ear sounds) and Output 3 would be Sum L+R for mono?
@RoshRoslin
@RoshRoslin 2 жыл бұрын
You can run both out 1 and out 2 in stereo, including stereo for in-Ears. Your In-ear system has to also be stereo (many are only mono) so make sure to do that. And it sounds great If you plan on using a tube amp while running stereo for everything else, you need TWO amps to get the full stereo effect as well for your stage sound. If you only have the option to run Mono, I would recommend making 100% sure you don't have any phase cancelling if you use sum L+R. Because of this, I usually recommend people use Copy L>R if they're unsure for out 3 to a single tube amp

@@RoshRoslin thanks for responding, but do I set it up as a sum l and R on output three since I am going Left mono into the back of return of a amp and right mono into another amp? Or do I leave it stereo. It says input is on output three. So I'm just a little confused. The other option 2 is I'm thinking about one of the amp going 4 cable method and the other amp is going to the back of the return.

I am using two tube amps. One for 4cm (maybe) or in the back of the return and the second one in the back of the return. Should I match output 3 just like output 2 or the other way around whereas output 2 has to match output 3. The way you explain it is that I might have to create an output 2 and an output 3 block and bypass the cab so it doesn't have speaker simulation going into both amps. I was wondering if I can set this for a global configuration because I only want cabinet simulation going to the front of the house and to the earphones.

so could you run output 1 mono output 2 stereo?and you said you copy out 2 to outout1 ,do ever run the same sound to in ears as you do to foh?
@RoshRoslin

You could run mono to FOH and stereo to In ears. Just be aware of any phase cancelling effects like the 2290 delay and other effects like ping pong delays. FOH will only get one side if you use copy L>R or you could get phase cancelling altogether using SUM L+R

One more question? I use an audio technica m3 wireless system. Is it possible to send stereo from FM9 to FOH and another stereo send to my in ear? Thanks
@RoshRoslin
@RoshRoslin Жыл бұрын
Yes, I would use out1 to send to your ears because they have both XLR and quarter inch outs. Some IEM receivers only take quarter inch, others take XLRs some have combo jacks. Then take out 2 stereo to FOH. you'll now have independent control to both what goes to your ears and what goes to FOH. If you are getting a "full" mix from FOH, it would be better for them to take the stereo feed from the FM9, then send a stereo mix back to your IEM receiver. Then you would get a stereo guitar signal mixed in with the rest of the band. This is incumbent on a FOH mixer/Monitor engineer to pan your guitars accordingly etc.
