Here (Argentina) the old soldiers say that when the FAL was adopted, FN also offered the BAR in 7.62x51. But obviously (and I think wisely) our armed forces opted for the FAP (heavy automatic rifle or FAL 50.41) which is the FAL but with a heavy barrel and bipod. Curiously, the original name of that rifle was FALO (Fusil Automatique Lourd), the problem is that in Spanish "falo" means "penis". Greetings from Patagonia Argentina.

Back in 1983 when I was a U.S. Marine with the Multinational Peacekeeping force in Beirut, Lebanon, while on patrol one day I found an FN-DA that was in rough shape, missing parts, completely nonfunctional. I asked my commanding officer if I could bring it home with the intention of someday restoring it. My CO adamantly said “no” and ordered me to leave it with him. I suspect it now hangs over his fireplace somewhere back here in the states… damn, I wish I had that gun.

I've said elsewhere in this video's comments, but the Monitor variant of the BAR was far better suited to the role than the bulky A2. Just put a lightweight, discreetly folding stock on it, and you have an American FG.42 right there.
@MR.LMR1996
@MR.LMR1996 2 жыл бұрын
@@GammaAKF I imagine the FBI didn't buy as many as the US Army did. They probably wanted the best version of the weapon. As the US Army probably wanted the cheapest version that they could build and field in mass. Sure, whilst building guns with a similar profile to this version of the BAR maybe more mainstream and easier these days, I think pistol-gripped rifles were much more difficult to make during the early to mid 20th century in the Pre WW2 decades. Note: Chances are I'm probably talking out of my arse with all this. At best this is just a blind guess on my end.

Thing of beauty, I used to own a semi-auto version here in the UK before the 1988 SLR ban. The gun came with not only a spare barrel, but also the sustained fire tripod. I'm not sure if people realise that the FN Model D set the pattern for the belt-fed, GPMG/MAG general purpose machine gun used by many NATO and western countries. I have seen a Danish gun re-chambered in 7.62x51, using the converted, 30-06 chamber modification. Glorious piece of kit!
@J.DeLaPoer

The Monitor is still my favorite BAR iteration; and I think the most versatile and useful as a practical carry weapon that still puts out some very impressive heavy firepower. This and the D are close seconds (there's very little actual difference between them). The thing is I guess that these are LMGs whereas the Monitor is really a heavy rifle, and it's much lighter and handier.
@ostiariusalpha
@ostiariusalpha 2 жыл бұрын
The Monitor, with a lightweight bipod attached, is what the BAR men in WWII _should_ have been issued. It was far better suited to how how the weapon was carried and used in actual combat, especially in the Pacific theater.

Isnt a fullauto 30-06 rifle waaay to powerful to shoot practically from the shoulder? Sure, if you just stick to Semi you got something pretty good, but for that there were better developments in the interwars years IMO as they didnt try to also be machineguns.
@iterationfackshet1990
@iterationfackshet1990 2 жыл бұрын
@@Cohac the monitor solved that by slapping a huge ass compensator on the barrel to reduce recoil, by a lot. The Monitor was designed to shoot specifically from the shoulder.
@ostiariusalpha
@ostiariusalpha 2 жыл бұрын
@@Cohac Also, don't forget that WWII .30-06 loads were relatively mild compared to modern hunting loads; that's why you shouldn't fire modern .30-06 in any M1 Garand that has not had its gas system modified. The old rounds actually kick like 7.62x51mm, and that's not an accident, since they designed 7.62mm to perform like WWII .30-06 from a shorter case.

Also, the M240 is a reworked BAR action. Meaning the children of that design are still in use today. JMB pretty much defined most modern firearms. The sheer scale of his impact is impressive. Maxim really spent his life mainly refining and developing a single idea. JMB touched everything, pistol designs (martial and civilian), Shotguns (pump, lever, semi-auto), Machine guns (LMG, MMG, HMG, BAR), and so so many rifle designs. He basically introduced the effective pocket semi-auto. Cartridge designs that are still used today.

@@asdasd-ty9se Sort of. I'd argue that in practical terms, a GPMG must have the capacity for belt fed operation. This doesn't mean a country couldn't use this as a GPMG and see moderate success. However, by definition, a GPMG has to be able to fulfil multiple roles for a machine gun: Fixed ground tripod, anti air mount, vehicle mount, infantry bipod, etc. It was the demand to reconcile these functions into one platform that necessitated the GPMG/UMG concept. I'd argue this is an LMG, in a similar class to the Bren and Madsen. With the good bipod and detachable barrel, I think it graduated from being a simple Automatic Rifle as originally designated.

I'm a bit confused by this. With the FAL came the LAR version with heavier barrel, bipod and 30 rd magazine. It was called the C2 in Canada and the L2 in Australia. It seems odd that the manufacturer who created a lighter, newer LAR based on their new whiz bang rifle would waste any time updating an antiquated, heavy WW1 design (much as I love everything Browning). About the only advantage I can see is the quick change barrel.

@@craigthescott5074 That's pretty much what I was saying, great firearm just not something I would want to have to carry, especially considering a full loadout for one. Also, I'm a bit of a poor and have to choose my purchases, they're not cheap as you know. Still a really fun rifle for the range though, and still on my list, just not quite as high up as it was before I got to play with one. I'm not a big dude, those are beefy rifles. And yes, JMB was a friggin genius.

Hi. As usual, wonderful video from Ian. Just one question If anybody knows. What is the difference in concept and usage with the FAP (FAL with heavy Barrel). I know it does not have the Option to change the barrel but it seems to hace a similar usage in the Army. I am from Argentina and our Army bought the hole Lot FAL+FAP+MAG+Hi Power but never heard of this BAR. Thank hoy all

@@zXPeterz14 Nah, it’s just a quality weapon. I would buy that argument in the 50s or 60s, but not as late as the first gulf war, Britain had procured plenty MAG-58s by then, and you still saw the Bren in service with front line units, not rear echelon or reserve units. They didn’t really phase the Bren out completely until they started getting the Minimi in quantity. EDIT: They phased the Bren out in favour of the LSW, and when that thing ended up being unsatisfactory then they went with the Minimi.

Ian If they are just going to put a spacer and use the FAL magazine why not just use the FAL it seems like an expensive upgrade when you already have FALs you could use for the same purpose. why not modify it so it could use a belt or something larger then just 30 rounds.

As a military, what would be the point of buying this at the time though? it looks more expensive to manufacture than the FAL. both are only useful in full auto with bipods as light machine guns. the BAR is certainly heavier too. surely a heavy barrelled FAL would be better in every single way

Outright impossible. With the likes of ZB 26, BREN and MAS 40/44/49 showing they can make a tilting bolt locked mechanisms which was mechanically simpler as well as to make. BAR got this linkage that involves three pivot pins. The tilting bolt I mentioned earlier needs up to 2 pivot points. Way simpler than BRowning's design.

One thing I always wondered: If I understand it correctly, the BAR is somewhat of a Squad automatic Weapon Typ of Gun, I mean it's the machinegun role in a squad, without getting hung up on technicalities. However, what I was always wondering, wasn't the 20 Round magazine always a major drawback when it comes to sustained fire, cover fire, supression fire etc.? I mean 20 rounds go by pretty quickly...
