Here (Argentina) the old soldiers say that when the FAL was adopted, FN also offered the BAR in 7.62x51. But obviously (and I think wisely) our armed forces opted for the FAP (heavy automatic rifle or FAL 50.41) which is the FAL but with a heavy barrel and bipod. @@GammaAKF I imagine the FBI didn't buy as many as the US Army did. They probably wanted the best version of the weapon. The Monitor is still my favorite BAR iteration; and I think the most versatile and useful as a practical carry weapon that still puts out some very impressive heavy firepower. I know a Vietnam veteran that carried a BAR in Vietnam in the late 60s

why did they mount the rear site backwards? On the FN FAL the sight looks almost the same but is not on backwards. the US BAR was overated real heavy could not change the barrel only 20 shot mag. the FN version was improved but still had a 20 rd mag.

Since the winner of NGSW is SIG's reinforced M4 with steel brass shells I always thought, why not use HCAR as the next generation of US Army rifle? The HCAR fires 30.06 ammunition and has proven mechanism and durability, even barrel wear problems can be solved by the BAR fnd barrel change mechanism.

BAR perfection! Maybe someone should mention to Brownell's that a run of these in the semi-automatic would be great for the civilian market....

Outright impossible. With the likes of ZB 26, BREN and MAS 40/44/49 showing they can make a tilting bolt locked mechanisms which was mechanically simpler as well as to make. BAR got this linkage that involves three pivot pins. The tilting bolt I mentioned earlier needs up to 2 pivot points. Way simpler than BRowning's design.

@@samuelmendoza9356 Yeah, Browning was a genius, but he was really entering a whole new world of design parameters and the BAR while functional when it was introduced was still more old school than revolutionary. But at the same time he was the shoulders other stood on for their successful designs.

Does the 8mm Mauser and 30.06 use the same magazines? Ik the 8 is 7.92x57? I believe vs 7.62x63 for 06?

Have you ever considered doing a video about mechanical rate reducers like those seen in the BAR and other firearms?

Interesting video, so FN manufactured the BAR and the heavy barreled FAL in the same period for the same market!!! Kinda odd!!

I apologize, but I can't seem to focus today. Did Ian mention if this version of the FN-D had the interesting fire rate adjustment mechanism of the original? If he did, I wasn't listening when he said it.

whether the progenitor of this project was the 7.92mm wz. 28 "Browning" ??

One thing I always wondered: If I understand it correctly, the BAR is somewhat of a Squad automatic Weapon Typ of Gun, I mean it's the machinegun role in a squad, without getting hung up on technicalities. However, what I was always wondering, wasn't the 20 Round magazine always a major drawback when it comes to sustained fire, cover fire, supression fire etc.? I mean 20 rounds go by pretty quickly...
@NRH1112 жыл бұрын
In 1918 it was developed for "walking fire" a suicidal tactic really consisting of the soldier going over the top and firing from the hip to suppress at a walking speed

I saw a previous videos of yours on the scout rifle. What would be your take in modernizing the concept using a semi automatic rifle? Specifically what rifle would you recommend that is under 6.6 lbs and could have both iron sights and optics placed on it in .308?

I can't help but think the FAL was just a closed bolt BAR given that it was designed by the same designer at FN who made the changes to the BAR, I'm surprised I never hear people mention the BAR as part of the development of the FAL

I always thought that the BAR would be improved by putting the action on its side to facilitate magazine changes while shooting on the bipod.
@ostiariusalpha2 жыл бұрын
Sure, but you can improve it even more by turning it all the way upside down and attaching a belt fed mechanism to it. Which is what FNH actually did.
@calvingreene902 жыл бұрын
@@ostiariusalpha I didn't say otherwise but give me a hacksaw, a board, and a few hose clamps and a few hours later I would have achieved my modifications.

@@marinusjansen9139 But I could have done it in the trenches of WWI. One improvement does not preclude others and mine are easy to put on existing guns.
