To this day I refuse to play FNAF4. I used to have a phobia of the dark when I was younger (not a fear a phobia, I literally used to be paralyzed in a slightly dark room) a recurring nightmare I'd have is literally what your doing in that game. In my bedroom running to close both the door to my bedroom and my closet, listening and waiting. So no, no matter how good the game is I ain't playing it.

FNAF came out when I was in second grade; and it has haunted me since. It’s what caused my fear of the dark, why I still put covers over my head, etc…and I haven’t even played it once. I also had recurring nightmares similar to the ones you stated, but the scariest part about it for me was the fact that the only information I was getting about the game was from my friends, so of course my brain took things to the other level. When one of my friends was describing withered Bonnie and how his face was gone, he said a “rabbit with it’s face torn off”, and second grade me litterly thought they were talking about a giant humanoid robotic bunny with a bloody skull, gore and all. There’s countless others stories. I’m glad it’s starting to come back though, as now that I’m older, I feel less terrified and actually quite intrigued, and might pick it up soon.

One of the main issues with the SB 'jumpscares' is that they aren't actual jumpscares. You are alerted to the fact that you have been spotted and you can also hear them running right up to you, therefore nullifying any chance of surprise.

@Shade Puppet Thing is, I could absolutely see SB being scary in its format. I swore when I first played the game that there would be five nights like usual, and like the animatronics, the pizzaplex itself would gradually ruin and decay. The security bots would shut down, but that also mean there would be no warnings for chica and the others appearing. Obviously this was just my wild thoughts before actually beating the game, but I think something like that could have salvaged it horror-wise. I like the memes we got out of SB though lol.

No, it’s not just that. One of the scariest aspects pertaining to the game is the simple removal of cameras. Shuffling through the cameras in previous games, seeing where the animatronics are, reassures you a sense of safety and anticipation, as you know they’re not at your door yet, and furthermore, you have an idea of how much longer until they make their acquaintance. But in FNaF 4, there are no security cameras, so ironically, you don’t feel secure about the environment you’re in. So, you pretty much have to put your life in jeopardy and open the door to see what’s lying within the darkness beyond your doors. That constant apprehension when you approach the door, squinting as you open it to check, unsure whether a monster will greet you, or you’re actually safe, is the reason why I have never played FNaF 4, ever…. Something about heading to the door without knowledge of what you will see until you get there and shine your flashlight, it just evokes so many bad vibes.

The jumpscares in UCN are hilarious because they just make "omnomnomnom" motions most of the time. It's the equivalent of "booga" and makes them seem less murderous and more like they're just pranking you. I wish there were more jumpscares like the scooping in SL because that would improve the horror aspect due to watching yourself get more or less eaten or having them lunge right at you being scarier than simply having them in your face. I think Springtrap in 3 has the most underwhelming jumpscares. He mostly just appears or stands there but watching him woosh across with your monitor up is pretty cool. His jumpscares themselves are also too predictable.
@MARKY2428
@MARKY2428 2 жыл бұрын
Most of the jumpscares aren't even animated, they're close up renders of the characters heavily shaking with motion blur. (Ennard, Nightmare Mangle, Music Man, Puppet, etc.) This is 100% because UCN is a big game with many assets and clickteam probably couldn't handle all the jumpscare frames for over 50 characters (not sure if it wouldn't) or Scott just wanted to lower the game size.

I honestly thing 3 is heavily underrated. What a lot of people see as the game just being ugly, I think of as the atmosphere being really dark, dingy and unsettling. FNAF 4 is the scariest for me as well for many reasons which you listed and more, but mostly it’s the concept of staring into a pitch black hallway, knowing something could be staring at you INCHES FROM YOUR FACE, and having to just stand and listen. Of all the games, it makes me feel the most helpless, and the smallest (both physically in the eyes of a child/the size of the animatronics, but also in a more metaphorical sense as well because of the endless void of pitch black dark in the hallways)

Something that should be taken into account for pizzeria simulator is the salvage scenes, which are very unsettling, and the nature of how you cycle between nights. The main thing that makes fnaf games (apart from sister location) scary to me (Me! My opinion!) is the feeling of helpless, you're trapped in a room with very limited tools to defend yourself from these terrifying killer robots, like doors with limited power, or a flashlight that, if it runs out of power, you're fucked. The main thing security breach did wrong was that the robots stopped being threatening due to you being able to just hide or shoot them and they will leave you alone.

I think why fnaf4 is so effective is because of how relatable it is. The others aren't really that relatable apart from maybe being scared of animatronics. But I'm certain almost everyone as a kid had night terrors and was scared of what could potentially be lurking in the closet, the dark hallways outside their room or even under their bed. To be completely honest, my only gripe for this is fnaf 4s placement, but I do have to agree it is scary. However I feel it's more of the build up to the scare that is more inherently terrifying. The fact you need to listen so damn closely and all the the rest of the sound design being very unsettling is much more scary than the actual models for the robots are. The main reason I feel that way is they feel like they are trying too hard to be scary imo (big teeth, destroyed metal framework, ect.), so much so that they don't fit into that uncanny valley effect that I feel most true horror comes from. Otherwise, I agree with most of your other points, good vid!

Fnaf 3’s horror comes in the chaos of the nights, you could be getting jump scared back to back knowing every time you do you’re giving springtrap more and more time to come closer to you. And even when you do have downtime you have to look for him, he isn’t just standing infront of the cameras waiting for you, he’s hiding. And the more you look for him, the more likely you get a camera error, giving you more panic. And all of this perfectly leads into the worse jump scare of the whole series

(I agree) FNaF 4 is easily the scariest and I think that sound plays a key role in that. Obviously the animatronics, and the environment are scary but the sound takes it to another level. The constant checking for breathing, footsteps, and in night 5 where you have to check for laughs and fake laughs up the scariness tremendously. The jump scares all happen when your so focused on sound ques and what not that when you accidentally flash your light at a door or don’t check closet/bed fast enough, it just freaks you out. FNaF 4 is probably the only FNaF game so far where my hands start sweating as soon as I start a night. It’s the ultimate combination of sound, animatronic design, environment, mini games, and more to give you the worst of scares.

man i love everything you said about SL. it’s a special game to me because it was the first one i was following development on and bought on launch day. i remember how the animations, slight “free roam,” and voice acting all made it seem like the first AAA game in the series. funny how much better the execution was than SB lol

I’ll drop my own list as well since other people are doing it, from least scary to scariest: 8: Ultimate Custom Night. It’s just more about the gameplay than the actual scares. Definitely a cool one, but not really.. horror. 7: Security Breach. I like the game, not really that scary, but it has its moments. Feels tense unnerving at times especially with the Parts and Service endos and the DJMM fight. I also love details like chica’s voice without her voice box. 6: Pizzeria Simulator. I liked the tension a lot, but I wasn’t really a fan of the animatronic designs and the jumpscares arent as good as others from the series 5: FNAF 3. Not surprising to most, it just wasn’t all that scary. The atmosphere was creepy though and I liked the mini games. 4: Sister Location. The gameplay was a lot more unique for the series and played on some of the most tense aspects really well, but I wasn’t scared of the animatronics. They’re too plastic and pristine and robotic. They don’t have the uncanny valley feel of real animatronics anymore. 3: FNAF 4. Atmosphere is awesome, but the animatronics are so overdesigned they don’t feel that scary anymore, they become just generic horror monsters. Something about the safety of a bedroom feels more comforting than an unfamiliar office where you feel very trapped and vulnerable too - so the setting isn’t as effective to me 2: FNAF 2. The withered animatronics and mangle dominated this game. They were horrifying, and still are to me, and I thought the ambience was really good and the sound effects were great. My favourite jumpscares and jumpscare sound of the series. Mini games are super creepy, hidden things like shadow bon/Freddy and the endos were terrifying, it was just an upgraded FNAF 1 really. Toy animatronics outside of mangle weren’t scary at all though 1: FNAF 1. I wouldn’t even watch Mark play this game for awhile as a kid, and I was so terrified of playing it with my friend, certain we’d get nightmares. Everything was so mysterious to us still and the atmosphere kills it. The sound effects horrifying. That groaning sound when an animatronic gets in the room with the cameras up haunts me to this day. It just is objectively scary, and the animatronics feel real which really sells it.

Speaking as someone who only watches let's plays and enjoys the atmosphere and lore, but I really think one of the biggest downsides of SB is the setting. With the other games, you were in a family-friendly pizzeria sure, but not on the show floor. You're at a desk, in a security room, or a storage room, the behind-the-scenes. The mechanical part, I guess, where everything is kept running. There are shadows everywhere, and to me at least nothing ever looked squeaky clean, everything had some sort of grime or age to it (especially in 3 lol). Fnaf 4 is the outlier, but again so much is obscured by shadow as you sit alone and seemingly defenseless. The fact that you don't have security cameras like previous games means you need to run back-and-forth to check everything, and it really sells the point that you're just a small child. And overall, I think the lower-budget visual design helped add to the eariness. But in SB, it may be night but it's usually not that dark, at least not as dark as the other games. Everything is well-kept for the most part, there are bright colours everywhere. Security bots actively roam the halls (not to mention the animatronics themselves). Although idk much about late-game areas, I know those take place behind-the-scenes of the pizzaplex but at that point I'm usually checked out so I don't remember much of it. Maybe those areas are better? Idk. Maybe if they went with a more liminal look the pizzaplex could have worked? But it's too.... new. Too clean, too clear. It doesn't feel like you're unearthing a dark past. It barely feels like you're going places you shouldn't go. Idk I hope this all makes sense

Pizzeria sim scares me the most now, used to be fnaf 4 when I was younger due to the atmosphere but the shreak and tension built up before you get jumpscared in P.S genuinely shocks me right to the soul. In FNAF 4 you kind of know when you're around the left and right doors you may not properly hear the breathing and you'll get jumped but for PS it's kind of harder to guess when your demise is gonna come i.m.o

Something you mentioned that I want to bring back up is the sound design in fnaf 4. Even though the room is so dark, you know roughly where the animatronics are if you pay close enough attention, but it’s difficult to pin down exactly how close they are. The intensity of the Freddles quiet screeches, the running back and forth of Foxy, the inconsistency of the walking sounds makes the player unsure of if they are safe in that moment. Yeah, you could trust your gut, after all you only heard one set of walking on the left, surely Bonnie isn’t at the door yet. But what if you’re wrong. This hint of uncertainty combined with how fast you need to move in order to survive creates an unintentional gamble mechanic within the game where you could save a couple seconds, which is much needed in the later nights, or you could play it safe and continue darting around your room. This element to the gameplay loop of fnaf 4 made it so much more enjoyable, especially with the other unique, sound based mechanics.

And when you’re at the door, you want to close the door because you think you heard something, or maybe you didn’t. Perhaps you didn’t and should turn on your flashlight. It’s a sense of apprehension that really make the jumpscares so frightening.

I think that Sister Location is a little higher on my personal ranking. Most of the gameplay leaves you feeling completely exposed to the horrors you are trapped with, all while being hundreds of feet underground and far from the nearest exit. The fact that the entire facility is mostly pitch black adds to the mystery and scariness of the game, because you have close to no idea where you are, and the places you can actually see are rather uncomfortably shaped. Not to mention the incredible jump scares! If I had to pick one FNAF game NOT to play in real life, I would pick SL, just above FNAF 4.

Fnaf 3 is and will always be my favorite game, springtrap has a really cool design, the gameplay is easier sure but still keeps you on edge. I think it manages to build tension even with only one animatronic song with the random appearances of the phantoms. While the jumpscare is a little weak it has startled me on occasion. The biggest flaw is the cameras, it’s hard to see anything and I get the purpose is to make it harder to find springtrap but the ambiance I think excels. While certainly n out the scariest it has character and manages to be something different from the first 2 games without trying to hard like fnaf 4. Fnaf 4 excels at being actually scary, design wise i think the vibe it creates is weaker than the first 3. I never looked fondly on fnaf 4 but I always will with the first 3 games.

FNAF 4 deserves 1st place no cap. When ever I started a night, the Sense of Dread would intensely kick in from the grandfather clock to the entire atmosphere, the cherry on top is the gameplay to add on too this because every time I go up to the door it feels like I'm rolling dice whenever I turn on my flashlight even when I'm reassured, and then to add on to that is the fact your ignoring the other entrance to your bedroom when you're checking the other door which can get your ass jumped when you come back to your bed.

FNaF 4 is really scary because of the fact that you have to crank up your volume to hear the audio cues, and when you get jumpscared, it's when you shine your light, confident that nothing is there. It always catches you off guard.

Maybe I'm just very sensitive but I thought security breach was pretty scary, a lot of sections had no light whatsoever apart from the flashlight and bright eyes of the animatronics, and the sound effects and music play in and out pretty well. Still, considering you can move and the game does mostly have a lot of light, it isnt that scary, at least compared to other entries in the series.

Fnaf 6 nailed every element of the game to perfection. The storyline peaked at this part, giving a fitting end to FNAF, (I’m not counting security breach and help wanted). The animatronics originality gives the game nice background. Also, the game is relatively hard, making it so you have to do tasks and remember the animatronics exist, unlike in other games. Elite game

I find Sister Location to be the scariest by my own standards. FNAF4 comes close but it feels more like cheap horror (Oh no! The pointy toothed thing is in the dark house?!). There were a lot of great points in the video though. I appreciate that it wasn't based solely on jump scares and took into account minigames and similar aspects.

To be fair, with Fnaf 4, you're underselling the ambience and sound design by a huge margin. Horror isn't JUST derived from visuals. In some cases, sound can be far more terrifying, especially when used without visuals to help you. Sure, the Nightmares are a bit over the top, but the fact that your only hope of survival is based on if you can hear them QUIETLY BREATHE is the reason I struggle to play it. Not due to difficulty but due to how terrifying it is.

I don't understand how you don't view sister location's ambiance as scary. It's legitimately the only game that traumatized me as a child because of how eerie and unsettling it is. You're told to trust this animatronic but, unlike in security breach, you can actually tell baby isn't really there for your own good, all leading up to the destruction of the animatronics in the endgame, as everything seems beyond your control, or your comprehension. Everything about it just feel... Off, disturbing, down even to the gloomy color palette, lack of any sort of light source and depressing music. And to me, the scariest scene in all of fnaf isn't a jumpscare, but the small crawl of Ennard dragging his body to your living room, invading your safe private space after you've finally escaped from him, making you understand that no, there was nothing you could do to escape

I honestly think Fnaf 2 was more effective horror-wise on those of us who grew up spooked by those old animatronics in real life. I believe that pizzeria simulator is the scariest. The sound terrifies me and the fact the vents are wide open. Before that it's 100 percent fnaf four and with good reason. I always said the reason why fnaf four is the scariest is because how sound is played in. You have to "connect" in the game and listen. Because of that you lose your sense of guard and if you get it wrong it catches you completely off guard. It's so brilliant

LOL i put this video on as background noise while i worked and i came back just as u were going through fnaf 1 being topped and i hadnt heard anything about fnaf 2 yet so i immediately assumed you were calling fnaf 2 scary personally i freaked out bc youre so focused on the game mechanics theres no time to really be scared, youre basically running on adrenaline. besides, you see them all coming and as terrifying as it is, the less suddenness of it kinda takes away from the horror element. however i must say when u put on the mask and toy bonnie/chica go across the screen thats probably one of my favourite moments. not only is it absolutely terrifying but it also kind of gives me a sense of nostalgia to when i was a kid, when i played hide n seek and i hid under a table or behind a door. in plain sight. the only part that made that fun for me was the fact i could see people moving inches away, and that was something that got adrenaline pumping. i think fnaf 2 is awesome but definitely not topping something as incredible as fnaf 1

Nothing holds a candle to FNAF 1's atmosphere. Despite it being lower-quality graphically, it just looks & feels like it could exist in real life. The animatronics have never been creepier, either. The way Bonnie is silhouetted in the hallway or the way he peers into your door have lived rent-free in my head since 2014. The second game was basically better in every way except for sheer horror. Withered Chica & Bonnie, not withstanding, the scariest thing in that game is the sound that plays when an animatronic enters the hallway.
