Believe it or not, Last Mabelcorn was written alone by Alex in a short time. It was supposed to be a different Wendy focused episode about her getting weather powers and going mad, but it felt very OOC. Plus, with Frozen just being released, they were worried about comparisons. They acrapped the episode and Alex wrote this one as fast as possible. Its the only episode where only one person had writing credits

I've noticed a problem both of the Grunkles have is believing ignorance is bliss. Stan believed if the kids didn't know Gravity Falls was weird, they wouldn't find the weirdness. Ford believs if noone knows about his history with Bill or the rift, it shouldn't be a problem. I do like that even with their opposite personalities, they have similar pros and cons.

I don't think it's "ignorance is bliss". I think they just learned to only trust themselves. They both had to be hyper-independent their whole lives - both Stan and Ford. " Trust no one" is quite literally their theme since they had only themselves to rely on and trust, everyone else in their lives either betrayed (in their eyes) them or was seen as a threat. they can't trust anyone with important information on a fundamental level, and they learn to do that over the course of the show as they reunite as family

Why's Stan's such an oversimplification? When undoubtedly already relayed the statement on the 1st ep of the 2nd season? He knows what the Towns weirdness has done to his brother, why would he want them to also find the weirdness. But Ford is such an interesting Character, where people love him due to the sci-fi characterization but not understand his whole character... Which not everybody should or are obliged to be... It's just funny to argue how many things he has developed all those years, to not even give a rats arse about developing the world.

There was absolutely a “reason” to not warn people. People have shown time and time again that they are silly and often mess things up. It’s like in the Land Before Swine episode where Dipper is talking about Soos messing up serious things. Dipper is way too hard on him and a jerk, but he’s not completely wrong. Stanley, out of anger, threw the bag with the infinity sided dice on the floor before Ford even had a chance to explain it. Stan could’ve destroyed the universe with his carelessness. The more people Ford told about the rift, the more likely that the secret of the rift would’ve gotten out. I guarantee that if Ford told Mabel, Mabel would’ve told Candy and Grenda. (Not a flaw of her character, I would’ve told my best friends about an insanely cool universal rift), and they might’ve told other people who told other people and eventually someone who’s kind of irrational might’ve tried to take the rift so they could see it for themselves. (My guess would be Robbie) I do agree that Ford was 100% projecting with the apprenticeship thing and Ford is almost certainly the most flawed protagonist (with what happened with him not thanking Stan, his abuse of McGucket, his superiority complex in falling for Bill’s tricks) However, when it came to the rift, Ford had almost no reason TO tell anyone. The only way Mabel would ever get close to the rift is if Ford somehow got kidnapped, he gave the rift to Dipper, her and Dipper had near identical backpacks, she had a really bad day, she grabbed Dipper’s backpack on accident, she ran away alone, and she gave away the snowglobe that has a clear scientific significance to it. (Not every day do you see a snowglobe with literal specks of space floating around it). I don’t blame Mabel for what she did, she had an absolutely terrible day, but the amount of tiny coincidences that had to transpire for the rift to end up with her alone… the chances that it happened is astronomically low and I guarantee someone accidentally spilling the beans about the rift to the wrong person is thousands of times more likely. Most of the characters are clumsy and have a hard time keeping secrets.

My comment’s pretty long so here’s a TL;DR: Ford doesn’t tell Mabel because he is aware she isn’t great with keeping secrets and it doesn’t make sense for him to tell her if she has no foreseeable way of obtaining the rift in the first place. If I had an object that could cause the end of the world and my child or my best friend was bad at keeping secrets, I absolutely wouldn’t tell them. Especially if they are 12 YEARS OLD! They don’t deserve to have that much weight on their shoulders anyways. To keep my kid, or friend, or whoever from having to carry the burden of a world-ending secret, I would probably just say something like “Hey, don’t give away things that aren’t yours. Especially if they have some kind of clearly significant value to them.” Which should just be common sense..

@@adinom687 totally get what you mean. but also! what is the actual point of the secret? like, bill obviously already knows about the rift, he declared his intention to get it loud and clear, and ford Knows that bill will try every trick in the book to get to it. it would be really easy for ford to arm his family with knowledge, they can’t be Tricked into giving away the rift if they know what it is. but ford doesn’t trust people like that. it’s understandable, really, but it is a big flaw of his, bill (and kinda life in general) isolated him and it Stuck. ​@@adinom687 as much as what you're saying is true, you also should consider the characterization of Ford, he didn't tell Mabel not out of concern of them carrying such a burden, yes he knows she is Stan are reckless but simply dismiss the account of, they are responsible, they are not as dumb as he thinks, as he himself sees that he is of higher intellect than anybody, that his way is always right, he could never be wrong. Firstly he doesn't have to explain what it does, simply say "this is very important, we cannot be handing it to anybody else" it's one of his flaws of to not take into consideration how others are far more superior than him in different accounts. Believe his actions are for the "greater good" too some extent some are, but what did he say when he talked about Fiddle Ford (Mc Gucket) "someone who is wasting away his talent in building computer parts" believing that his invention, Discovery are the at most important, the same goes when he offers Dipper the apprenticeship "help me discover and unravel the world's mysteries, while I take you to death inducing scenarios every week, you're social life, and desire to be close with people, who cares about that, that's not important" is all he is offering Dipper. You claim he knows then well, why say that to Stan right before they were about to beat Bill? Admittedly he is very much up his own arse that he wants to have the last word, to show his intellect, people also fault Stan there the most, not realizing that if he lived his life, they would do some way a similar action, though not an excuse, I just don't see how people claim that they wouldn't, where the chances are 80% of the time they would. You say the "Stan just threw down his stuff with the infinity dice in it" yes, cuz why would at all powerful reality warping object be placed in a plastic container? He didn't even bother to place it in a safer container much so place it somewhere secure, maybe build a safe, meant to encapsulate it? And after what happened to Mc Gucket and he realized how dangerous the portal was... Why keep it up? Why keep the books intact? Obviously I get the sentiment of it is his life's work, but then again it also proves his opinion on his work to the lives he could simply save if he just scrap the portal, rip the pages from the book.

Hirsch does mention in the commentary that the idea is that mabel was alone apart from Dipper, so going back would alone would mean she would be indeed, alone. I think the episode makes a bad job showing Mabel's perspective (which if you have seen the commentaries may or may not be because Hirsch projects himself into dipper and thereby cares more about him)

@@ilexdiapason No, I totally agree. I think "The Last Mabelcorn" is a REALLY good/important episode (possible in my top 5 favorite Gravity Falls episodes, differently in my top 10). It's where my love for Stanford Pines started, cause this man of science worshiped a demon! Designed his house in Bill's image and promised "From now until the end of time" and I think that's SO freaking fascinating, yet we barely touch on it in the show. And I'm rambling- Point is: In others people's reactions to Gravity Falls (at last the few I've seen online), they think 'Oh no. Ford might be working for Bill. Nevermind, he was just tricked in the past.' But that's it: they don't think about the greater ramifications. Not just Bill, try combing back through Ep 1... Roadside Attraction was based after a road trip the show crew had before making S2. They thought it'd be best saved for the right before the finale. Tho with the Shack barrier just before and now they leave... they amend that later on, but yeah - kinda clunkly. Hand Witch Mountain, not Mystery Mountain. Yeeeees, a solemn reason Bill got to the rift! It is such an awesome moment, bc the theme "Trust no one" has been ongoing, and it’s what let Ford down. He both betrayed his mentality by telling Dipper (and Mabel got his bag), and stayed true to it by essentially telling Dipper to distrust his family. And both moments let to downfall. LOVE THIS
