DeWalt 20v Max Battery Fix

Showing some common fixes for these batteries, this one had a burnt up cell. Not a recommended repair, as damage can occur or batteries/cells can explode or leak, and will also void warranty on new batteries and tool damage can occur too! Just a pro-tip, 18650 batteries, especially high capacity ones (>2000mAh) are actually dangerous to solder 'slowly', as the heat can deform or damage the internal insulation layers, causing the battery to spontaneously self-discharge internally, causing a fire. Usually this happens when you approach full charge on the battery as it's "just enough" to break down the insulation layers internally. To avoid this you need to heat up the case and solder VERY quickly, so only the case reaches solder temperature, and then it quickly dissipates into the mass of the battery. That's the point of spot welders, they dump a lot of heat a lot fast before it can spread to the battery.

Most of these brand batteries have a charge/discharge counter in their circuit board. Which means the battery disables itself after you've plugged it (example 10,000 times) in a tool or in a charger. The reason for this is the chargers are fast-chargers that pump a lot of power quickly through the batteries, and the tools push them to their limit. If the battery is very worn, this can set it on fire. The purpose of the counter is to identify when a battery is becoming a risk to fast charge (or discharge) based on statistics, therefore making sure >99% of batteries never combust. This is something they *had* to do legally to mass-sell lithium batteries to consumers (who are usually very dumb). You normally can't erase this counter in the board easily.

soldering you can damage the batteries from the heat you're better off spot welding. the form factor of those batteries are known as 18650 those batteries replaced them with are unfortunately are nowhere near the capacity that they're labeled as quality cells. the overall you did a good job for not being familiar

Well that has saved forking out on a new battery, and seeing inside I would say they are well over-priced for what is inside. Maybe you might consider making a video of making a spot-welder? :) Thanks for sharing.

Ive got some of those that charge and work BUT they only show 2 lights (not 3) so don't fully charge. Got any ideas? Not that old either, less than a year!

The 1.5 amp hours are junk I have been saving old batterys in the trash at work and trying to make some in the future or a 12v battery

Hey My friend has a stihl bg86c. Leaf blower that's not running correctly at all. He's put new gas line &filter,air filter, new carb,checked all the head bolts for proper tightness,spark plug etc it won't rev up. Any bloody ideas mates????? TIA

Got a battery doin somethin similar and meanin to open it up In case anyone wants tips on how to solder these type of batteries check out 13:50 at kzbin.info/www/bejne/pH26h4d8n8SMn80 Uses a quenching technique with a 220w+ weller solder gun and #10 wire. Make sure to use leaded electronics solder and RA Flux, not the plumbin kind of course. Cheers
