My 17 y.o. son is option 40, 11X contract who just finished week one of OSUT. He called today and said he's still motivated for RASP. His father was a S.E.A.L., I a Navy vet, so I reminded him it's in him to succeed. I headed straight to YT for tips to give him when he calls. I appreciate the content and will impart as many tips as I can in our 15 minute Sunday calls. Much respect to all who forged this path. It's admirable and pretty gangsta.

​@@milselfNot at all. Me and his father are Navy vets. We were estranged, and so we actually didn't find out he went SEAL until after he passed in 2021. My son had already long decided he wanted to be a Ranger. It's just a wonderful coincidence? that my son wanted to go that route. Strengthened the fact especially after finding that out. I asked many times why Army? He said it's just the branch that fits him most. I think so.

@@alchemicalsoul it could be because of more opportunity in the army. now to even get a chance at buds you have to sign a 6 year contract. there's so many people trying to be navy seals that they'll drop you for anything, I'm talking like if you get injured they'll drop you, failing an event dropped, one dude said some one in his buds class got dropped for having a tobacco pouch. He even said someone got dropped last week of phase 2 for falling asleep, he also said 30 guys got dropped for high testosterone.

I went through RASP in 2012. What you said is spot on. It was the most intense 2 months of my life. It will change you forever, good and bad. But you will be a different human being afterwards. Some advice that maybe someone else won’t give; get used to cold weather training. I know it seems like a wild suggestion considering rasp is taking place in Fort Benning, Georgia, which is in the south, but depending on the class that you were in, you could be in during the winter like I was. When you go through a place called Cole Range I think it’s weektwo or three you’ll be outside and you will get rained on for days on end I’m fairly certain they have rain machines… anyway you will be wet for days and if it’s cold it’s almost unbearable. That’s the only time I wanted to quit. Practice being cold and wet and finding ways to deal with it/warm up. I think that would give the Ranger recruit a major advantage. For the obvious advice; start running, be physically elite ( you will be pushed to human extremes) learn the Ranger creed, don’t have girlfriend -or anything that takes your mind off the objective. @@bfte2759 Agreed, I went through summer 2012 and it wasn't _that_ bad. The hardest part was Cole Range. I think high-speed NCO assholes in the Regiment make it really hard to stay in. Maybe the culture has changed since they banned hazing.

@@g_rr_tt hazing IMO is very needed to keep people in line and to see who actually wants to be there. You don't get hazed for no reason. Either youre not studying knowledge or you are being lazy, not motivated etc. Sometimes yes, they can go overboard but during those times, you should speak out. Not all fire breathing TL's are bad. Bad apples always stand out.

I grew up in north Georgia and live on the ga Florida border now it gets below freezing here during the winter sometimes it's hilarious and the lowest I saw in North ga near Atlanta was like 5 Fahrenheit somehow but I was down hill and my thermometer outside was bottomed out once so it's incredibly important.

Every time I watch one of these videos or learn something new about the rangers it only makes the urge stronger, when I get in and pass ranger school I'll email you my thanks one day.

Here's a breakdown of UKSF (United Kingdom Special Forces; 22 SAS/SBS) selection. PHASE ONE 1. Aptitude; Navigation & Endurance (commonly referred to as Hills Phase) 4 weeks of *DAILY* mountain marches navigating by map from point to point against an *unspecified* time limit. Typical schedule as follows (remember, these marches are EVERY DAY)... Week 1 15-20 km 40lbs weight+weapon, water etc. Week 2 18-24 km 45lbs weight+weapon, water etc. Week 3 20-32 km 50lbs weight+weapon, water etc. Week 4, Test Week; consists of 5 marches over 7 days march 1, 2 & 3; 30 km 60lbs weight+weapon, water etc. march 4; 35 km 60lbs weight+weapon, water etc. THEN, 4 hours rest and start the final march; Long Drag; *65* km 70lbs weight+weapon, water etc. 20-24 hour time limit (weather dependent). --------------- PHASE TWO 2. Jungle warfare, tactics, navigation ALL LIVE FIRE TRAINING. 6 weeks. Those who have passed phase one have to then pass jungle training. Training takes place in Belize or Brunei, deep in jungles. Candidates learn the basics of surviving and patrolling in the harsh conditions. UKSF jungle patrols have to live for weeks behind enemy lines, in 4 man patrols, living on rations. This includes yet more days of marches point to point. Jungle training weeds out those who can't handle the discipline required to keep themselves and their kit in good condition whilst on long range patrols in difficult conditions. Again, there is a mental component being tested, not just a physical. Special Forces teams need men who can work under relentless pressure, in horrendous environments for weeks on end, without a lifeline back to home base. ---------------- PHASE THREE Continuation; Escape & Evasion & Tactical Questioning/Resistance to Interrogation The small number of candidates who have made it through endurance and jungle training now enter the final phase of selection. The likelihood of a special operation going wrong behind enemy lines is quite high, given the risks involved. UKSF want soldiers who have the wherewithal and spirit required to escape and evade capture and resist interrogation. For the escape and evasion (E&E) portion of the course, the candidates are given brief instructions on appropriate techniques. This may include talks from former POWs or special forces soldiers who have been in E&E situations in the real world. Next, the candidates are let loose in the countryside, wearing World War 2 vintage coats with instructions to make their way to a series of waypoints without being captured by the hunter force of other soldiers. This portion lasts for 3-5 days after which, captured or not, all candidates report for TQ. Tactical Questioning (TQ) tests the prospective UKSF men's ability to resist interrogation. They are treated roughly by their interrogators, often made to stand in 'stress positions' for hours at a time, while disorientating white noise is blasted at them. When their turn for questioning comes, they must only answer with the so-called 'big 4' (name, rank, serial number and date of birth). All other questions must be answered with 'I'm sorry but I cannot answer that question.' Failure to do so results in failing the course. The questioners will use all sorts of tricks to try and get a reaction from the candidates. They may act friendly and try to get their subjects chatting; or they stand inches away from their subjects and scream unfavourable remarks about the sexual habits of their mothers. Female interrogators may laugh at the size of their subject's manhood. Of course, a real interrogation would be a lot more harsh and the subject would not know that they get to leave alive when it's all over. That said, days of interrogations and enduring the stress positions and white noise break down a man's sense of time and reality. UKSF are looking for men who can withstand such treatment long enough so that the effects of revealing any operational information they might have can be lessoned by HQ. ------------------------------------------------------------ This is 6 months in, successful candidates for the SAS are now badged and report to Hereford, the home of 22 SAS. The SBS candidates still have a further selection/continuation phase to complete before being badged and report Royal Marines Poole, the home of the SBS. Completion of this 6 month selection course is NOT the end. They then start SF training (which never ends) and for the 1st year in particular are on probation; they can be sent back to their original unit at any time.

@@jameslifts2196 Although they are under the UKSF umbrella, they are not direct action/ tier 1 units (SRR sharing a barracks with 22 SAS has no bearing on this info). They are a supporting organisation carrying out some roles formally undertaken by the SAS/SBS. As such, their selection scope and difficulty is well below tier 1 level. That said, I've only read unsatisfactory and unreliable sources not even worth mentioning.

Lol first off, change your contract to 4 years. 6 years is way too big of a commitment for something that you have no idea if you’ll like or not. Secondly, you should go to one of those selections(preferably RASP) right out of initial entry training and airborne so you don’t have to waste any time in the big Army. That is of course if you’re physically fit and committed enough

Yeah, you dont want to be a Ranger import. They prefer it if you grew up in battalion, and didnt come from somewhere else with bad big Army habits. Plus, there's no guarantee that you'll get your tab. Its much smarter to go RASP right away.

@@RamonBadr i understand where you're coming from. I signed 6 years because ive been training to do this my entire life. I go in as an E-3 already because of a program I did with the Navy (it transfers to the Army because I was an NCO and did 3 years of it). I also plan on being enlisted for 24 years, so i have a full pension, and for airborne ill go in right after OSUT which is at the same base, (as its already in my contract). Ranger selection wants more experienced people, id rather get some time with a Airborne (or infantry if they put me with one) Unit and get my Ranger Tab then go immediately on a contract with no combat nor regular army experience

Just curious, do you remember how you were at pt before basic? I want to get myself in shape before I even enlist but I don't know how long I should wait. I want to join ASAP but I need to be able to have my shit in order before RASP. I'm currently not in good enough shape but I can get a ~7:20mile and can do 40-45 pushups in 2 mins. I don't really have someone to help me with situps so I just use my bed frame to hold my legs down and can get like 75 in 2 minutes, but I think my form isn't correct because that's a way better score than I think I should be getting in my shape. How much better do you suggest I get myself in shape before I enlist? My plan was to go in October so I'll have summer and some of the fall to get in shape but idk if that's enough time. I'm in the best shape I've ever been (which still isn't great) so I don't know how long this kind of stuff takes to achieve

To me Jump School and Ranger School was more mental than physical. Everyone handles it different. My advise is to keep your head straight and focus on your goals. This is true of RASP for the most part, but once you’re in regiment, at your battalion it’s not like that. Especially after you get your tab. A lot of training and it’s awesome. Just get thru the selection and it’s a great life. Trust me. He is 200 percent right about not being that guy pushing people and screaming thinking you’re not getting smoked. So the second they make you throw your airborne beret on the ground, lock in and get it done. It’s not hard if your fit and don’t get hurt.

Ranger 83-87. Did 2nd Batt RIP and PreRanger. It was no joke especially when I was afraid of heights and couldn’t swim. I survived and tabbed. Best experience I’ve ever had. It was fucked up at times but I don’t regret any of it. You gotta want it.

I think you’re spot on. Rangers and SF are actually pretty different with separate missions. Rangers are combat hardened with the best leadership in the military. It’s a high speed, high stress environment home and away. Selection never ends in Battalion. Rangers are more relatable with SEALs while SF is like a version of elite civil affairs. Rangers will sometimes switch to SF for a more relaxed environment, but still keeping a higher standard than big army.

Went through hell of a deployment got shot nine time. I’m medically retired 100 % p and t turns out bullets passing through your body isn’t good if you want to stay infantry airborne or to go be a ranger so I said retire me then cause o wasn’t gonna be anything other then infantry

Watched a million SEAL videos now and after watching this I can finally feel a true appreciation for the differences in psychology between the Navy and Army SF. On YT former top level Army SF techniques are being hashed out on Fieldcraft Survival with former top level Seal Team 6 DJ Shipley regularly and it is interesting to see the differences in personalities and training.

Buck, I am prior service. Entered with Opt 40 and was a day one drop out. I wanted the scroll more than anything. Ended up ETSing out of the 82nd. Did some growing up... and now I'm really wanting to get back in. I told myself I'm only going back in with an 18x or another 11B opt 40. This video just helped me make my choice. I'm not feeling the hazing that WILL occur at Regiment. SF is the way for me. Thank you!

⁠@@juniorjunior6039I’m going through the process right now. You need to at the least have a 105 gt score. That’s very attainable just study your math and geometry. And I didn’t have to wait at all. There are hundreds of option 40s available right now because recruiting numbers are so low. If your recruiter tries to tell you that there aren’t any available, go to a different recruiter

I think the stereotypical “Ranger run your head through a wall to create a hole, without questions asked” is simply a bit too old timey post GWOT. Rangers are infantry, but SOF infantry at the end of the day. Taking an airfield, conducting a raid, conducting recon, or gathering intel, etc, may seem simple on paper, but require critical thinking abilities because there will be contingencies never before encountered. Point being, there’s smart Rangers, strong Rangers, and then both. The ones that last in the Regiment are both.

A really good tip for staying awake is getting chap stick or even vicks vapor rub (a small amount of vicks) just something with a little bit of menthol and rub it on your eye lids, makes your eyes feel like ice and makes it really easy to keep em open.

Just an update on the process for after RASP. You will go to airborne school after RASP and then you will go into what ever battalion you’re assigned to. I think this change happened pretty recently, I went to airborne school back in august and there was tons of ranger babies in my class

Yes I can confirm. They made the change about a year ago or so. Helps with weeding out the dickheads who only get option 40 for airborne school because before the change, just getting airborne was like impossible. So dudes would just quit in pre RASP and go airborne. Dumb.

It's harder for officers pressure wise. Also you'll have to have years of background as a 11A and a very good reputation. Getting the green light to get into a Ranger Bat as an officer is hard. SF too. The reqs for Ranger School are higher iirc for officers too.

To get into Ranger Bat as an 2lt you have to be an 11A, all other support O's have to go to Korea for a year then come back and try out at RASP. To become a 18A you have to be 1lt Promotable before you can submit your packet to attend SFAS.

I'm 27 years old. I have a bachelor's degree (philosophy). Former athlete. High endurance. Still in decent shape but busting my ass to improve. I'm unmarried. No kids. I've had life experience, time to grow up along the way, and I'd like to think I possess relatively high intelligence. I've recently undergone major changes in outlook and life goals and I've decided I want to enter the SOF community but am unclear as to the best path to do so. I want to receive the very best hands-on tactical and weapons training. I want to spend as much time training, fighting, or outdoors as possible. Whichever training best transforms a man into a force of nature - that is where I want to be. I have been looking at enlisting as Op. 40/18x or going Army/Marine OCS. I'm interested in the Rangers, Raiders, or Green Berets. I would very much appreciate any recommendations considering my age, condition, and goals. Thank you.

Did a three year contract as an 11b. Had a four year break of service and I am considering re-enlisting with an option 40. Gotta love when the whole crew turns against each other when getting smoked or being afraid of getting smoked. They will find a reason to smoke you even if you're doing perfect. It's all part of the game. I remember in basic our DS told us fireguard can do the platoon's laundry for them. The DS who was on CQ from another platoon smoked us for a solid hour because he doesn't let his platoon do laundry during fireguard. We couldn't fight it, take the smoke session and carry on.

I remember going to sick call once. I was sick for days, spitting up blood and a fever. Had a 5 mile run and I just didn't think I could do it. Told my drill sergeant I was sick. He looked at me and said, "yeah I know. We've been watching you. You need it. But you can't go until after chow." Which was after PT. They posted a road guard on me and told me to run as much as I could. My DS was with another group. Ran about two miles and couldn't go and tried to fallout. DS came back and started smoking the shit out of me. Road guard kept telling him, "he's sick!" He made the whole company run back to me and finish the run. So now I'm the asshole. Went to sick call and was given antibiotics. The next night I was getting my meds from my DS and the other guy was there. He looked at me and said, "huh. You were sick" I never got shit the rest of basic.

I was USA Infantry in the late 80's. I did a little training with both Rangers and SF. I always equated it to this. "Rangers are the hammer, SF is the nail" Rangers always seemed to be a quick extreme force multiplier. SF was more precision strike unit. I never considered Ranger as a tier level force. Having read a lot of books about Iraq and Afghanistan, it appears the Rangers have changed battle plan over the years into more of a specialized strike unit.

Pretty sure Rangers deployed more than anyone in OIF/OEF and it would make sense to specialize for that type of war. Now they no doubt will get ready for China/Russia "peer" forces.

You are right. During the war, we had more missions than Special Forces Operators to complete them. We would sometimes use Rangers to do some of the less specialized missions as we were spread extremely thin. To do this, Tier 1 operator squads were added to Ranger companies in order to complete various ops.

When I went to school the parking lot was full of trucks with rifle racks, and not once was there any trouble. my how times have changed, truth is if parking lots were full of trucks with firearms my guess shootings would drastically drop.

I went through in 2007 through R. I. P. Now I'm not going to be that old guy says it was tougher back then. But rip was completely different set up than what rasp is. Rip was solely setup to get as many people to quit as they could or fail out or whatever and when you got to your platoon if you pass rip. Your platoon and Company would get you trained up on their Sops and driving all the vehicles and everything else but of the sun that's where your training really started. So I think it was 2010 when rasp started and I can tell you seeing it from the outside looking in it did look a lot easier and a little more training and different phases of it and through each of those different phases it look like the toughness of it and the strictness of it lightened up through each different phase I mean even as far as from haircuts to what they could eat at the chow hall. So both had their group amazing benefits and pros and cons. The benefit that I saw at rasp from the kids coming out from rap is they learned a few more things that we didn't have to f*** with them as much teaching them the basic s*** vehicles and stuff like that. But again and I'm sure every Special Forces Unit is the same until you get to your platoon. You are as green as the day is long. Annette's on that platoon to get you up to speed. So against elections just to see if you can mentally and physically tough it out and learn a few things on the way. So you can make it very easy on yourself and just do the breakfast lunch and dinner mindset. RLTW 3/75

Rasp 1 is not that bad. It sucks but it’s only 2 months long and phase 2 you get to do cool stuff. Rasp 2 is a gentleman’s course but the tests are very challenging and they only choose the best leaders

I went through RIP (RASP) in 94 and it was insane from start to finish, but I loved it hahaha, the majority of the guys I went through with loved the intensity and craziness of it, but it was on until you got through for sure. No one shit themselves though haha But we did force hydration drills to make sure everyone was hydrated.

SSGT B drove a tiny car too. I'm pretty sure he won the lottery and still had his huge self in a tiny car. RASP used to be a lot worse when there was RASP hold. Really there was a selection before a selection. There would be 4-500 people and only 175 would get into class, the rest would go 82nd, 173rd, Honor Guard etc. Out of 175 we had 55 graduate. Out of those 55, about 20 made it to 3 years in Regiment and got a tab. Now it's different.

From watching documentaries about a lot of special operators, SEALs will fit you if you're into quick hit, extraction and water comfortability. Rangers on the other hand is like a huge fight where the enemy knows you're coming, plus you have to be comfortable walking long distances. Just my 2 cents. Of course I never served, so my knowledge is very limited.

Going 75th will open doors to the following. NNSA security, DEA FAST, CIF-CRF, RRC, CIA SOG, US Marshall SOG, FBI HRT. Setting into SOF is probably the best decision you can make to go onto other things

Cert team school deadline: as a team, build the event style tent in very short amount of time to literally get “smoked” in (CS gas). Apparently we were the first group to ever put it together before time ran out. They still told us to stfu and get in the tent. The canisters were thrown in shortly after. I'd still go SF, I worked at the USAF Special Warfare Training pipeline for 7years. Hands down no other SOF Unit plans like SF. CCT would be MY second, got a lot of really good friends who are Controllers.

Just turned 24(6’1 229lbs), the muscle is there but working on loosing the rest of the weight so I can run. 18B sounds like my calling, but the AFSOC recruiter for our state goes to my home gym and is willing to help. Wouldn’t want to ruin a good opportunity.

@@sadf526 that’s a hard one, got a really good friend who is the branch manger for SR. With the training they receive and schools they get to attend its a tough decision. I would make a list of pro’s and con’s for each and see which one stands out.
