Got badly hurt when sniper shot driver, APC went out of control and rolled over. We were sitting on top and dove inside. The weakest point of the 113 is the underbelly. A land mine would kill everyone inside so everyone always rode on top. That’s why you always see people on top when you see videos or pictures of 113’s in combat. I hope they strengthen the underneath.

Scovserb curmudgeon, so you think that Craig Smith is lying about the vulnerabilities of the M113? It’s history goes pre-Vietnam usage by the US and it has always been a mine blast victim. Name troops who were mechanized habitually rode on top due to a weak belly. Also the early ones were gasoline powered rather the later diesel ones, and always burned to the ground when hit by a RPG. It’s aluminum armor would melt into a huge molten pool.

Needed updating. Good and dependable. Had an 2Lt. Constantly bringing his track in bitching about performance. Told him to get in. Took it out on drivers testing course. Max safe speed for course was 25 mph. I ran it at about 35 to 40 mph. With all the wild curves, dips and drops I could hear him through my headset screaming hysterically. At the end of the course I pulled back as quick and hard as I could almost standing that bad boy on its nose. I know he crapped himself. He went to the First Sargent complaining, I got called in . Being Top knew I can't stand bullshit he glazed over my collection of DD 2404's and log books on the vehicle. He winked at me and replied " Well sir, after all these complaints I see his team did a hell of a job properly repairing your vehicle. There was never nothing wrong with it. He was a back seat driver who constantly pissed his driver off who in turn did everything possible to avoid having to tote this butter bar around. This Lt. was transferred to the Redeye platoon where he complained about his jeep. So, we kept it on constant deadline status and he was stuck riding in a truck while we had the luxury of using his jeep to buzz about the field and base. Moral of the story is you don't screw with your maintenance team they can make your life miserable. Oh and after they started putting M151A2's with that antipollution bullshit in use they ruined a fine lightweight vehicle. Out of all the vehicle types I had driven the M113 was the most fun to drive.

@Adecodoo The whole battle taxi concept never worked out as mechanized infantry would prefer better armed and armored vehicles. Troops would rather sit on top and then sandbag the hell out of the insides for fear of mines. So much for shrapnel and small arms protection. So for carrying infantry it's both outclassed by IFVs in a conventional war and by MRAPs in an asymmetrical one. But it's so versatile that countries with limited defense budgets could always get good value out.
@majungasaurusaaaa4 жыл бұрын
@Adecodoo It didn't work out for the M113. The fact that they had to develop IFVs for conventional warfare means mech inf would much rather have that. The Bradley was the replacement for the M113 for mech inf. In that case it's not apples and oranges. The M113 couldn't keep up with armor nor was it protective enough. The whole APC concept lost out on IFVs. Newer APCs they just make them wheeled and thinly armored. They're clearly not designed to accompany main battle tanks. "Moving men around in a safe zone" is not "battle taxi", it's just "taxi". The M113 is still used world wide because it's cheap and versatile, not because it's actually good at anything. Troops hate how it's a coffin on tracks. And sending men to their deaths to save a few bucks is not acceptable in modern day political climate.
@majungasaurusaaaa4 жыл бұрын
@Adecodoo It's biggest strength is also its biggest weakness, being a pretty bad jack of all trades. Many troops would prefer not riding in this aluminum coffin at all, walking and sitting on top of a heavily sandbagged one was indeed safer. Mech Inf's job is to keep up with armored thrusts. An APC can't do that because of lack of protection and in the case of the m113 horsepower as well. Cost is not a reasonable excuse in today's political climate. It's obsolete the moment better vehicles were designed to fill specific roles. It has no place in a well equipped modern military. www.benning.army.mil/armor/earmor/content/issues/2016/JAN_MAR/1Nuckols-Cameron16.pdf It's even a liability today in other utility niches. It's all cool on paper when you say you're not gonna get shot at. But the enemy has a vote. Israeli troops flat out refused to enter the Gaza in the m113 after a bunch of them got killed in one. You seem to judge that thing on the conventional war in europe that never happened. I judge it on Vietnam and the Middle East. Get this thing out of service ASAP!

Neden biz geri kalmışız diye sorup duruyorlar.
