It's alive! Spooky rock formations sculpted from extruded polystyrene foam (XPF) help to set the scene on my On30 Gruesome Gulch mini-layout. In part 5 of this series, I demonstrate techniques for carving and finishing lightweight XPF foam to create realistic looking rock formations.
Thanks for watching, amigos!

These rock formations really are superb Dave. It's hard to believe that simple, pink foam can look 𝒔𝒐 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉 like rock. I built a small N scale layout many years ago and used actual chunks of real rock, taken from the lineside, at the location I was modelling. That rock didn't look as realistic as yours.😁

I know you probably already have plans, but that area of rock that sticks over the tracks would be a perfect perch for a big haunted Victorian, complete with glowing lights and sound effects. Keep it up, looking great.

Hi. Although I too saw the resemblance to Vasquez rocks, towards the end, especially after the lighter shades were added, the whole structure turned into a very ancient petrified log. I like it a lot. I’m picking up a lot of great tips and techniques. Thanks. I look forward to seeing your next update. See ya.

Hi Dave Shock horror!! you have gone modern image on us LOL That looks great, where is Cerberus going to be hiding to keep the living away and the dead where they belong. If Cerberus is a bit too scary, perhaps Hagrid will lend you Fluffy. After all three headed dog's are a bit hard to come by even when you know people in the trade Could you please do a piece on the small deserted mine . This project is coming together nicely it already has the look. regards John

this is a really lovely tutorial, thank you! I think I have to say that the rock shapes look their best at about 12:50 or thereabouts, before you use the wire brush. I think the wire brush gouged out the big lovely shapes you had going and resulted in details that were too noisy. the heatgun toned some of it down, but at that point the great character of the rock was lost in my opinion there's a really lovely striation technique that I think I've only ever seen on Eric's Hobby Workshop where he cuts many closer lines together with the knife and then uses the blunt side of the box-cutter to break and chip away foam in a rather procedural-like erosion process. you might like it! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rquyfHR9ocSpqM0
