Eggs are 68, 65 and 62 days old today. It appears Jackie is losing interest in incubation. She did little sitting on the nest today and let Shadow take his second night shift of the season. Shadow himself was in and out of the nest a lot, leaving it seemingly unattended for short periods of time.
Hopefully he will take his cues from Jackie and will join her on the roost tree soon. ❤️️

It is unlikely that the eggs will hatch at this point. We have no way of knowing why. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together - in 2019 and 2022.
When eggs don’t hatch, Jackie and Shadow may start withdrawing from incubation eventually (they usually over incubate for several weeks, details can be found in our Activity Log). Withdrawal is always a process and it happens gradually with longer and longer breaks. Shadow may be a little bit more stubborn than Jackie (this is something we have observed in the past). Left unattended, the eggs may eventually be scavenged by ravens or other animals. The nest cameras are live 24/7/366 weather and maintenance permitting.

Shadow is the best parter. Even though he had just spent about 5 hours on the nest, he brings Jackie a fish as soon as she comes to the nest. That’s love 💕

When Jackie did that look back as she sat on the branch to leave reminded me of when she tried to get Shadow to say goodbye last year and she left and he went to that branch and looked back and you knew he didn't want to leave but deep down he knew he had too ! That look is forever in my heart, .....so sad.

Just finished reading the history of this nest. What determined parents these birds are. I have a picture from several years ago of the nest in the National Arboretum where Mr President and the First Lady had 2 eaglets that year. The picture was taken at night in the snow with one parent nesting covered in snow and the other on ti-op of the nesting parent with it's wings open to shelter and warms its mate. Very touching.

@@edwardizhonig204 Well they are protected in every state, but for some reason Alaska is where most choose to live. What is considered ‘cold’ weather is not what we see in California, it’s just the normal way of things in the mountains. We can see snow and then it warms up and melts. They have been together and using this nest since 2016, so I have faith that they are comfortable and happy where they are. Been nice ‘chatting’ with you, God bless and have a good one ❤️ our 🦅🦅

My heart has gotten such an attachment to these two loving , amazing bald eagles throughout their time of caring for their eggs! Ive seen an illustration of how dedicated J.&S. are to each other, & a genuine love, they have for one another, & not giving up on what was going to be their family. It’s simply incredible! I know this has touched & pulled on my heartstrings , in a very “ blessed” fashion! I’ve cried, smiled , laughed, & prayed during these wonderful videos for awhile now. J.&S. have educated me SO MUCH, in what I had no clue about bald eagles , & how they live, survive , & LOVE their mates deeply! To see close-up clips, of every detail of their feathers, beaks, eyes, bodies, SIZE, lol It’s been astonishing! Phenomenal! I’m hoping it is only the start of seeing these two, that won’t be the last! I’m keeping my self engaged to receiving continued notifications on J.&S’s future lives! I’m not going ANYWHERE! 😁🥰🙏.

Feeling a little sad? Nostalgic? I just watched Cali Condor's The Spirit of Big Bear Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You It covers the life of Spirit AND has a fab Led Zep song throughout. I watched it after watching this video. If they are ready to go, so am I. There's still Spirit to celebrate (toe-biting brat that she is) and there's next year. Let's lift ourselves up too--Spirit did it, and Jackie and Shadow did it MANY times today. Let's not hold them back! Let them fly on to their next adventure, with a promise they will return!

For me, the Dynamic Duo are way above any other pair as parents etc..Was watching older videos as new to this & Simba their baby flies back to the nest after Fledgin or whatever it's called lol & he has a fish 🐟 for Simba who comes in like a hurricane 🌀 & Jackie's last words as both perched 👌 I know nothing but something special about those two for sure I say! They'll come back next year to the same nest and try again most likely. They'll visit this nest one and off through the year and bring some sticks, etc., and check on things.

​@SimplyLolly Nobthey don't break down the nest, They keep adding to it. The Nest can be many feet in length from top to bottom. Across the top of the nest it's 5 to 6 ft wide, I can't remember how long it is. Eagles nests are truly amazing and definitely a sight to behold if you ever hot to see one.

Squabbling! I'm guessing that Jackie spotted Shadow with the fish and took off to join him, but he then flew to the nest to at least get a couple of tiny nibbles himself. She then followed him back and let him know if no uncertain terms that she wanted that fish. I think their instincts are start to whisper to them that the eggs are a lost cause.

They will not hatch, it is nature. Continue reading the info provided and you will gain the knowledge. This is what they do year in and year out, they’re not sad or depressed and they carry on. We all love them, but this is God’s plan not ours.

I believe the best option would be for the camera man to hike up there to the nest. Pretend to fuss with the camera but rather do a switcheroo. Remove the eggs replace with a few day old chicks. Jackie and Shadow will be overwhelmed and take very good care of the babies.

Very sad when u read about the limited survival rate of eggs by this pair..Spirit & only one other survived,fledged & moved on. Correct me if i am wrong, but youth & difficult environmental conditions have played a big part. They r so totally devoted to one another, it seems a bit unfair. I understand they stay in the area when eggs gone. Where is the roost tree & do they always return there until mating again?

Alaska has the largest population of eagles, so no the weather is fine for them-they chose it. If they can survive Alaska, then the mountains of California are easy.

So as they slowly wean themselves from sitting on the infertile eggs, they'll naturally allow predators to come and feed on the eggs? Would an eagle ever rid eggs themselves, as in roll the eggs over and off the nest?

No, nature will carry on as it has for centuries. They will not ‘roll’ the eggs out of the nest, they will either be eaten by other birds or disintegrate into and become part of the nest.

@@bigdogs-29 They will leave that nest because they only inhabit it during mating season. They will stay near, probably in the other tree on FOBBV cam 2, so during the off-season we catch occasional glimpses of them. No, they do not ‘allow’ them to it just happens. Once they leave the nest, then nature will take its course. Either ravens will get them or as I stated before, the eggs will dissolve and become part of the nest. The eagles understand nature and the way things happen, over the years I have learned a lot and accept the way things are to be. God bless and have a great week
