Jackie began the night on the nest, but then perched on the front porch for much of the night. She and Shadow seemed restless as they alternated time on the nest, met on a favorite snag, and even did some nestorations throughout the morning. They will share their plans in their own time.

It hurts my heart to watch them both continue to try and hatch those babies. Hopefully next time we all get to see a successful hatching. I think deep down she knows. It’s just difficult to fly away and give up. I’ve buried 2 babies. Maternal instincts are in bedded in each female that raise her offspring after birth. Bless both of them.

I have been watching them for quite some time. Would hate to see them go. I realize they are not living their lives for our entertainment. It has been such a pleasure to watch them inter act with each other, chatter and snort, fight and fix up their nest. They have so much respect for each other, we could certainly learn from them. I wonder if the continued bad weather makes it harder for them to snap out of incubation/nest-tending mode, as it were--a lot easier to leave eggs when the weather is nice as opposed to being in bad weather and having your instincts still telling you to sit on them and protect them. In any case, they're both such magnificent birds. I wish them lots of time hanging out together soon, even if it means being away from our camera.

It's just heartbreaking. Their perseverance through the coldest of nights, visibly chilled for their babies. The dedication of these wonderful birds is just outstanding. Once Jackie & Shadow leave their house for good the wind and other critters will move the furniture and that will make Shadow unhappy when they come back next year. Do you see what I see? They flew to another tree away from the camera and they are necking.😱😆👍 Well that's enough of that Shadow says. Now he's back home doing some housecleaning. These two lovers draw me to my computer all hours of the day and night.🥰 If it wasn't for the mods I wouldn't have the luxury of watching them. Amazing video of eagles response to inviable eggs. Restless coming & going, Jackie's calling out, each staring at the eggs, roosting close together, gathering more sticks and fussing around with them (staying busy ?). Animals do experience grief and these seem to be comforting behaviors. I've become fond of S&J and my heart is feeling 💔 for their loss.

I don't think they are grieving. They are following hormonal instincts. They don't know why they sit on the eggs. Eagles are not very intelligent birds, like ravens or crows. That isn't to say they are ignorant or anything. I'm just saying they aren't known for brilliance. Eagle parents are known to sometimes eat their dead offspring when an eaglet dies in the nest. They clearly don't have the same feelings as humans have. That doesn't make them awful, but they are not like humans and much of what they do is instinctual and driven by hormones. Jackie is NOT sitting there thinking about her long lost eggs and mourning that she didn't have babies this year.

So thankful they have each other for comfort during this hard time . I know Jan. to March is when Jackie is fertile , but I don’t where they go when they leave this nest and when they might return. I feel like when they're laying on their eggs, it's more of a way for them to say goodbye rather than thinking they're going to hatch. It seems like Shadow looks at them and asks what happened guys? Why didn't you hatch? So sad to watch.

Poor Shadow and Jackie 😢. I found out that Big Bear Lake fish are polluted. That's probably why. Stop throwing your trash on the ground, stop using motor boats they polluted the water. Be more aware, that there are magnificent creatures that depend on the fish in that lake. Wake up and be environmentally responsible to God's green earth and it's surroundings. Stop being selfish and care for once about your wildlife and the lakes and valleys that supply it!!!

Nest building is part of bonding and preparing for eaglets. I think all eagle couples create nests in a way that protects offspring from accidentally falling, whether rails or deep nest bowls. Thanks for watching!

They won't have a second clutch. Eagles never lay a second clutch this late. They wont lay a second clutch after incubating their first clutch this long either. Eagles are only fertile for about three weeks out of the year.

Their tenacity of protecting and still providing all they can to have their babies hatch, is so heartfelt. I will never look at an eagle or any bird really, the same way. If human parents were so committed to their baby eggs as birds, but being their as a mother and dad with the ultimate goal of bringing to them life and then all that is done to teach them what is needed to be successful in life. Does anyone know how and at what point they realized their baby eggs aren’t going to hatch and what their process was in withdrawing and what that looked like to the viewers who had and do have this honor of watching this process play out. Any info would be appreciated with understanding it isn’t a text book response but how they handled it the other times. No one can say when Jackie & Shadow realize their eggs are unviable, but what happened last year, and appears to be happening this year, is that first Jackie begins spending less time on the eggs. She seems to encourage Shadow away from the nest, but this, of course, is pure human conjecture. Shadow took longer to disengage last year and the same is playing out this year. Eventually they will both withdraw from the eggs and the the eggs will likely be scavenged by ravens or woodpeckers. They will eventually completely abandon the eggs and most likely the ravens will come along and do what ravens do. As fas as the lighting, its an infrared light, so it's not supposed effect them and they are not bothered by it... although, it does make me wonder in the back of my mind if somehow It is effecting their process (whether it be from something it may be emitting, be it energy, rays, radiation, waves, negatively affecting their circadian rhythm, hormones disruptors, etc.) ??? 🤔 What many of us don't seem to realize is that eagle eggs typically have only a 50% chance of hatching & a similar percentage of survival... so what Jackie & Shadow are going thru is pretty common, unfortunately. Regardless, our hearts break for them and here's to wishing much luck & success for their next clutch! 🙏🏼❤🙏🏼

FOBBV tells us that Jackie is only fertile between January and March, but also that nature can sometimes be unpredictable. It is a little late to hope for a second clutch this year.

Please don't feel so bad. Eagles don't feel like we do. They act on instinct. They don't know why they sit on eggs. They do it because their hormonal levels make them instinctually do so. They stop incubating eggs when their hormone levels drop. Eagles aren't grieving or crying about these eggs. Nature didn't make eagles to be that way. They are wild animals and they live by instinct. Jackie and Shadow have had babies before and they will again. Eagles have been seen eating their dead offspring when one dies in the nest. They do not feel like we do. They take life as it comes and live in the moment. They are carnivores who will kill and eat the young of other birds or snatch a bunny or squirrel or a kitten out of your yard to eat it. They don't feel bad about it. They live each day as it comes and they don't have deep feelings about life and death the way we do. So please don't feel so bad and cry so much. Jackie and Shadow will be fine. ❤
