How much of the Fobco Cream paint was needed? I'm considering a repaint myself.

Be interesting to see how the VFD holds up, in theory it should increase life of motor. Great piece of up cycling, get it bolted down to stop Frogy reclaiming it

Unfortunately putting a VFD on a relatively old motor like this one is very likely to cause problems in the longer run - despite the lower speeds which you'd otherwise assume to be helpful. To essentially repeat a comment I made in response to Part 1 of this series: the inverter or VFD controls the motor by applying rectangular voltage pulses ("pulse width modulation" or PWM) to the windings, with very fast-rising/falling edges. With a VFD the voltage at the motor terminals typically swings through several hundred volts in a small fraction of a microsecond (!) and this is a lot more stressful to the motor insulation than the ordinary mains supply. VFD's also cause additional bearing wear because the same fast-rising voltage pulses push current through the electrical capacitance that unavoidably exists between the motor windings and the rotor. Small voltages are then developed between the rotor shaft and stator assembly, enough to break down the bearing lube film and cause tiny sparks which, over time, erode the bearing races and rolling elements. Modern high quality motors are designed to withstand the PWM voltage pulses (which can cause voltage stresses in the insulation at well over 1000V), but your vintage motor won't be designed for inverter use, and if you connect it directly to a VFD, you may find yourself having to replace it or carry out an expensive rewind after only a relatively short period of operation. All this can be avoided by placing a "sine wave filter" between the VFD and the motor. These are available from decent inverter (VFD) manufacturers, also from companies like RS Components (who supply German-made filters from BLOCK). Choose a filter with sufficient current rating (obviously) and make sure the VFD switching (carrier) frequency is set to a value suitable for the filter you've selected (e.g. 8kHz). Sorry if all this sounds alarming! You may of course be lucky and not see any issues, and if the drill only gets used occasionally then the fact that the motor life is shortened may not matter anyway; but please do be warned!

I am just in the middle of considering doing exactly this to my fobco star but know very little about electrics. With your mod, will it still reach the 4200 rpm with the correct pulley configuration?

Wow what a transformation from start to finish On getting the drill up and running, you’ll have to take it easy using it and not chip all the paint. It’s was like watching repair shop. Cheers
