The screwing of the Apple Family timeline drove me nuts when I first saw this episode. If Filthy and Spoiled are engaged, then Diamond Tiara hasn’t been born yet, and as she’s the same age as Apple Bloom, then AJ’s parents had to be alive during that story. Really wish they’d included a quick line about how “Mom and Dad are in Appleoosa visiting family” or something.

Pear Butter wouldn't go to Vanhoover because Grand Pear doesn't consider her family for marrying into the Apples. My theory is they were offscreen either making Apple Bloom or at the doctor's office.

I would accept Pear Butter and Bright Mac trying to include him in the lives of his grandchildren. Maybe wanting him to be the first to know about Apple Bloom, having not told Granny Smith or anypony else yet. They could've told Granny that they went to Vanhoover in order to try and expand apple business, while hidimg the fact that they went to try and patch things up with Grand Pear.

Aa... now that's what the "Granny tells the story to Applebloom" was there for. Bright MacIntosh and Buttercup/Pear Butter aren't mentioned because Granny never told them anything about their parents. (The siblings had to go all around to learn about them). More like "got so upset she couldn't talk" if anything about them or pears was so much as mentioned.

Big Mac saying he should've kept his mouth shut when the main thing he was doing was trying to talk Applejack out of the horrible stuff she was doing, was an extremely harmful lesson. And when he wasn't talking Applejack out, he was just saying how he felt and entertaining guests, which there's nothing wrong with.

Yknow one of those universally hated episodes that makes people’s overall opinions of the show suffer, or is a universally divided episode that causes infighting. to me the episode seems to imply that he never listened to Applejack in general, not just this time. He loved to talk about his opinions, his ideas, about how he was right, but as AJ said in the episode “And you don’t ever have to listen to anypony else.” So I must ask, why would she listen to him? Why would she listen to someone who never gave her the time of day to listen to her ideas and what she was thinking? I will argue that this whole problem could and probably would have been avoided if Big Mac would have started listening and actually had a conversation with his sister long before this event happened. Your more likely to listen to someone who listens to you as well.

Though it is clear that AJ made the decision partially to shut her brother up who was indeed being obnoxiously talkative, Big Mac's actions had no *direct* influence on AJ's decision-making. It doesn't matter how much you do something I don't like, if I decide to punch you in the face, that act is on me. And while I can see Big Mac's actions in the past making his sister less likely to listen to him, the alternative to the current situation would be for him to not speak up about how what AJ was doing was a bad idea, making him even more complicit than he already was. His past actions may have been debatably wrong, but that doesn't stop his current actions from being right. I must also ask, how much did AJ listen to him? Because it seems to me that as much talking Big Mac does, AJ was constantly brushing off the things he said just as much, if not more, than him brushing her off. He, himself, had his own philosophy on how the farm should best be run.

Shady Doorags I don’t disagree that Applejack is at fault, I never said she wasn’t, and I wasn’t trying to shift the blame. AJ and Big Mac are both stubborn to a fault, and yes both didn’t listen to each other. However, to me at least, Big Mac was brushing off AJ more than she was to him. He absolutely refused to listen to any of her ideas, saying things like “ideas are all well and good, but you can’t plow a field with ‘em.” That phrase from him alone seems just makes him seem Like he is condescending to Applejack. No, he isn’t responsible for applejack lying, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t help lead to the event this episode was about. The him not talking much and listening to me isn’t because of the events of the episode but because he didn’t want these events to happen again. To me it’s trying to say that sometimes it’s best to shut up and listen to people and actually have a conversation, and not an argument or a fight.

For the Big Mac part, I figured he was saying that all the time he was speaking, he was saying nothing. He kept being sarcastic towards AJ and repeating everything she said to reinforcing the what he felt was wrong, but because of the way he was doing it, it seemed like it made AJ double down on the lies and not thinking anything through.

you know, Keyframe brought up a good point, the ponies that say "AJ NEVER LIES" have never really been around her when she actually did lie, not just Apple Bloom. The Flim-Flam Brothers say she never lies because she only did it due to them twisting her hoof, and even then she came out and told the truth anyway, and they have only been in 3 episodes....is there anyone else that says AJ never lies?

Also, FlimFlam don't think "lie by omission" or "exact words" counts as lying. AJ said hesitantly "it seems to work for Granny" (which was true, though of course AJ had her doubts) and then FlimFlam loudly exploit that (and AJ shuts up but feels guilty about even that much). If anyone really paid attention to what AJ actually said, I doubt they'd take it to mean she approved of the placebo tonic. I suppose AJ learned about the dishonesty of "lie by omission" and "Exact Words" during the Leap of Faith. She sure did "exact words" before. (Such as "tell you at breakfast" and skipping breakfast to avoid telling).

Of course they glossed over the part where AJ yells at Big Mac that he needs to stop going on and on about a problem if he's not going to help fix it. AJ is still really, really dumb in this episode, but I really like that line.

Except that AJ was specifically asking for help to fix the problem without doing the right thing. Big Mac WAS trying to solve the problem by attempting to convince AJ to tell the truth, but she didn't want to do it that way. Her line about "shut up if you're not going to help" doesn't work because the help she's referring to would make things worse.

After that point, Big Mac telling the truth on behalf of AJ would've made things worse for her. Admittedly, things wouldn't have been bad as they got with AJ lying, but the best solution was for AJ herself to tell the truth, which Big Mac was trying to let her know. He is guilty for being complicit, but this is not just as much his fault. Yes, he could've prevented the situation, but he's not the one who caused it.

Big Mac only made one attempt to tell Rich because, at the time, AJ hadn't lied to him. She just made a bad call and Big Mac was doing the professional thing and explaining that the one in charge of the Apples, Granny Smith, wasn't going to allow the deal. Any reasonable businessman from that point on would take it up with Granny because complaining to AJ and Big Mac would be pointless. The reason that Big Mac no longer attempted to explain the truth was because it was no longer about a bad call. His sister lied. What Big Mac did wasn't lazy, it was giving AJ the chance to get herself out of the hole she dug, because if Big Mac had come out and said his sister lied, this would've put her in a worse light than if she simply confessed. This is a much different scenario than simply explaining how upper management didn't approve the deal they made. No, Big Mac shouldn't have kept quiet if the alternative meant to continue lying to Rich, but the reason he did keep quiet was because AJ confessing to Rich was a much better solution than Big Mac doing it. AJ was the one who decided to continually ignore his advice and keep lying. That's why he continued to hark on AJ, because she wasn't listening to what was clearly the correct answer to the situation, telling the truth. If AJ had simply listened the first time, Big Mac wouldn't have had to keep repeating himself.

My headcannon is that "MacIntosh" is the [second part of the full name] of Granny Smith´s (unnamed, unknown) husband [the father of "Bright MacIntosh"]. Then, it is tradition for the firstborn colt to inherit it as their temporary "full name" (likely registered as such in Ponyville´s archives), until they choose to add a first name for themselves (likely to happen around when they get their cutiemark). Note: This "tradition" has nothing to do with the "Smith" family [the original owners of the _ground area_ were "Sweet Apple Acres" was eventually _named_ to separate it legally from the nearby area of "Ponyville"]. -> But is probably mandatory for the "Apple Clan" to recognize the heir of a particular branch; as their continous help and support was likely NECESARY given that the "Smiths" were inmigrants coming from far away into the "Kingdom of Canterlot" [so they did not had other close relatives to rely on difficult times].

I think what they may have been trying to say with Big Mac learning to talk less was not that he should't have tried to talk sense into AJ, but that he should have been more conciderate and listened to her ideas. If he had listened to her ideas prior to this and had not constaintly been writing off her ideas as nonsense like we see him do in the very beggining of the flashback, she wouldn't have been so desperate to prove herself and therefore probably wouldn't have made such a rash decision. Even if she had been about to make the decision, she would also be more likely to listen to any objections Big Mac would have had because she would know that he wouldn't be condecending and lecturing like he is in the flashback.

The reason Big Mac needed to talk less is because he never listened to Applejack's ideas and brushed them off. If he had, she might have talked with Big Mac about the deal instead of making it on her own. Then Big Mac could have explained why it was a bad idea or that they should talk to Granny instead of sounding like all her ideas are trash.

Her ideas were already terrible from the beginning! In fact he was interrupted when trying to talk to Filthy Rich before AJ claimed Granny was sick! It lead Big Mac to nearly getting his fucking leg amputated for Christ's sake! Based on this experience, he SHOULD speak up for more often before problems like this escalate at Applejack's expense. And based on her prideful harm in Applebuck Season when Big Mac stated the obvious about handling the entire field just proves how morally unhealthy it is in keeping your mouth shut when problems need to be addressed. Having Big Mac say "Yep" and "Nope" all the time with no privilege of saying anything else according Granny's interruption in Pinkie Apple Pie is like making Dash say "20% Cooler" too much or have Derpy say "I just don't know what went wrong" in every cameo she appears in. It gets repetitive and it overstates its welcome. I'm sorry but there's just no logical explanation behind this mess!

From my perspective, Applejack had lost respect for Big Mac's opinion. However, I do agree that this wasn't a good reason for Big Mac to *stop* talking. He just needed to talk in a more open/gentle manner instead of going on about how bad her plans were. Take it from a stubborn person, how you say things *really* determines if I'm going to listen.

Yeah I'll just say it. DWK satirized this whole episode pretty well. AB just wants her part of the apple family to actually have financial security by allowing the apple family's products to be mass distributed instead of having people come to their farm to get what they're selling. It's why she's eager to sell their product out to the Flim Flam brothers (back when they were actually sincere and sold people genuine goods and services) and Filthy Rich while Applejack, Big Mac, and Granny Smith would rather them always be one disaster away from financial ruin and bankruptcy because "Family traditions and handcrafted quality".

I get your position about big mac being right but the problem with the episode is that he talks alot. he just scolds Applejack and repeats himself or just the situation alot. If he had just been more willing to talk With her and not At her this probably would of been resolved with in the first few minutes of the episode. Or perhaps if he had simply talked to filthy rich instead of expecting Applejack to fix it given she is at the time the young one and not mature and speaking out of line for the family it would of been over. So yes it does kind of make sense that this all impacted him speaking only the minimal amount. He realized his own ideal of speaking frankly and honestly doesn't need to be so wordy.
