honestly i hated this episode because it portrayed dash as the bad guy, having supportive parents is great, i can thank my mom for that, having neglectful parents sucks, see my dad. but RDs parents went beyond supportive, they literally saved her shit, broke into private property, and harassed her to the point she cut off contact with them. yeah fine, they never got down on her for anything but the opposite extreme is never good either.

100% agree with you and I'm a little upset with Ari and how she talks and pretty much villainizes Rainbow Dash true Rd should have talked to her parents and set boundaries but we already know she's not the best at communicating her feelings and it's very obvious that she didn't want to confront her parents because she loves them the fear of Confrontation against your loved ones is a very real fear especially when the majority of people are telling you that your parents aren't doing anything wrong and that you should be happy basically saying if you say anything to them you will be the bad guy which they did in the episode and again our lovely hostess also Echoes the sentiment not realizing it could hurt a lot of kids and continues to be a present problem because people are telling them that they are wrong for having their feelings basically against their parents

Including my "amazing" family (I was being sarcastic), especialy my mom. A few minutes ago, for no reason, she asked if I played the ouija board before. I never played that game as I had no interest in it, so I said no. She then said that I was to have to give up all of my technology everynight permenantly, no locking my door for privacy, & obey her every demand. She had no problem with any of these things, so why is she doing this now? She then said that the DEVIL was controling my actions, & gave me a few minutes to tell her the "truth". I had a few problems with her ever since she became more overprotective & threatening, but now, I can safely say that I'm starting to hate her. And don't get me on the threats of violence. With that said, I don't think I can trust her as well.

Fun fact: If you are too supportive, your kids become annoyed and will leave you. If you don't care for your kids, they will feel neglected and leave you. If you too demanding and expect nothing lower than perfect, your kid will feel pressured and leave you. All in moderation, everyone. And Aramau, I couldn't stress this much, but congratulation. Just tell your mom you don't want a Gothic theme wedding.

I feel the need to come to Rainbow's defense; overbearing parents can be _just_ as damaging as negligent ones. My dad was extremely controlling and rarely gave me space to speak. I never felt heard, I never felt like my opinions mattered--he'd bulldoze right over me. He didn't do it out of malice--rather, out of obliviousness and his own damage. _But it still hurt._ I went through a period of time where I honestly stopped speaking--even with my friends. I was so used to be interrupted as soon as my mouth opened, I saw no need to even bother opening it. I was so used to my thoughts and ideas being dismissed, I saw no point expressing them. My dad also has absolutely no filter and would absolutely humiliate me by the things that came out of his mouth. I would literally have to avoid him while helping him shop _just_ to avoid the soul-crushing embarrassment being around him brought. Rainbow Dash's struggle reminded me of my own--of the ten-ton blanket you're smothered with due to parents like ours. It may seem silly to hate it, but it's honestly suffocating to live like that. Both of my parents loved me--no matter how much we fought--but that love didn't negate the damage done. It didn't negate how it caused depression, anxiety, and severe social limitations. It didn't negate the radial affect of this dynamic. Love never negated how horrible and unheard I felt. And I straight-up hate that ending. Them supporting you doesn't trump you feeling embarrassed, like your boundaries were violated, etc. It can help you understand their view, but it doesn't dismiss the way they hurt you.

I sympathize, but I think that Rainbow Dashes parents are different. They aren't embarrassing because they have no filter, or interrupt her. They listened to her when she finally talked to them. I could understand how it might be triggering because it's similar on the surface, and I can't say I relate to RD, since my parents are not like that, but it's not fair to judge the episode for associations with things it didn't actually portray. Sometimes flaws are just virtues that have been carried too far unchecked. Meaning, her parents could be overbearing, but they seem self-controlled enough to back off if it's pointed out to them. That's how I'd judge it if I just went by what was shown and not any of my own experience.

@@DiscreetRoyalty I wasn't saying it was a perfect 1:1 example, but just that overbearing parents can be just as harmful as negligent ones. I'm fine with you disagreeing with my view of Rainbow's parents, but please don't pave over and invalidate the way I connect to it or tell me that I unfairly judged the episode.
@DiscreetRoyalty
@DiscreetRoyalty 4 жыл бұрын
@@Mothman_In_a_T-Pose I didn't. I can tell that you have a lot of history with this, as you shared, and that's not something to be discredited. But there's a difference between saying RD could be right if her parents were like that, and talking about what was actually shown. That was my point. I saw a lot of other people talking about the same thing in the comments, and it's not easy to talk about parents without bringing up your own, I just want to be fair to the show. I don't think what it showed was bad parenting. I did not say you were unfair, I just pointed out the difference between what a real life experience is and what the show is trying to say.
@Mothman_In_a_T-Pose
@Mothman_In_a_T-Pose 4 жыл бұрын
@@DiscreetRoyalty "but it's not fair to judge the episode for associations with things it didn't actually portray" "Sometimes flaws are just virtues that have been carried too far unchecked." These sentences, as well as the general tone of your comment is why I believed you were invalidating my experiences as well as saying I was unfair. Also, with shows, it's impossible not to view it through the lens of one's own experiences. As an example, everything Zephyr Breeze makes my skin crawl. He reminds me of several toxic relationships I've had--that cloying dependency and inability to see one's own faults. Is he my exes? No. Has he done the exact same things? No. But the similarity is there and it's enough for my brain to create an association. Rainbow Dash's parents are in that camp as well. Rationally, I know the episode was about establishing boundaries and learning to communicate. But I've still lived through something similar enough that I can't look at it without associating it with my life. Finally, the point of my comment was to dispute what was said in the analysis, not debate on the merit of how bad Rainbow's parents are or how bad their actions/choices are. I brought up her parents because it's what sparked the discussion, not to assert whether or not I agree with their actions.

15:31 For me, I think the episode would've been improved if Rainbow had said she was disappointed at her parents incessant cheering because it made her feel like her *real* accomplishments weren't as meaningful. The clip from "The Incredibles" really summed it up: celebrating mediocrity. If they cheered just as exuberantly for hanging a towel as they did for a well-done aerial acrobatic technique, then it lessens the impact. The more often a stimuli is experience, the less of an influence it has. It'd be the same as if they never celebrated her at all. The public embarrassment angle was an easier route to take, but I feel it was to the moral's detriment. Still a good episode though.
@williamharmon4039
@williamharmon4039 5 жыл бұрын
It could also be possible that the constant praise and treating everything like a great success meant that Rainbow never learned how to deal with failure or might have come to associate accomplishment with being loved by others. That would certainly put some of her past behaviors in a whole new light.

Her parents had no boundaries and no lives of their own. Her parents should have been parents-not all-out fangirls. There’s a difference between support and worship. Her parents were a toxic fanbase like the Logang. They didn’t know their daughter at all; there was no friendship or intimacy-just worship, and thats not a relationship. Rainbow dash suffered from the other extreme of emotionally absent or completely absent parents. Being worshiped rather than loved and known feels just as isolating as being ignored, but everyone tells you you’re wrong for feeling that way. Instead of getting the natural compassion from others when someone says you were an abandoned child, people look at you with disgust if you admit that being worshipped isn’t the same as being loved. The opposite of the bad thing you have isn’t what you want. The people who have the opposite of what you have are suffering too. Both ends of the spectrum think they want the opposite, but peace is in the middle. I hope everyone here can find peace

Which we know isn't true because Pegasi fly by magic, and magic is all about self-image and self-confidence. If you believe you'll fail, you will; if you believe you'll succeed, you will. Is it any wonder, with her parents constantly boosting her self-esteem, Dash is such a good flyer? And Fluttershy is too, as long as she's focused on helping someone else.

I've explained this to Dr. Wolf before but this is actually my least favorite episode in the entire MLP series. I don't disagree with the message. But I think they could've done a better job of communicating. It. And they could have shown things from rainbow's perspective as well. Encouragement is one thing, but praising every little thing your child does is absolutely ridiculous. And children also needs space. Following them everywhere they go, is no better than stocking. I definitely think rainbow could have handled the situation a lot better. But she wasn't the bad guy in this episode. Of course, neither were her parents. Couldn't they have found some way to teach rainbow to appreciate her parents' encouragement while at the same time teaching her parents to back off a little bit and give their daughter some space? If "putting your hooves down" taught me anything, it's that there are often two sides to the same coin. But there are ways for you to learn something from both sides, if you catch my drift.

Looking at Rainbow’s parents it starts to make sense why she freaks out about not being hero worshipped. It’s all she’s ever know out of two options, that and being made fun off. And the latter option is far worse, so she feels like she has to be the hero, the best, greatest pony in all history. And if she’s not she’s just a failure, she’s only ever seen the extremes. And has rarely felt friendship, and even the because of her parents she still doesn’t fully understand mutual normal friendship. But she tries her best, so looking back, there really isn’t a lot I can really blame Rainbow for. Many would love to have supporting parents like that, but not at the cost of a true relationship with them, it’s practically being ignored. No matter what a parents attitude shapes a child, whether good or bad it depends on the child and how they grow and take it, along with other such influences in their lives. It’s really a good thing Rainbow ended up with such good and understanding friends, she’d be way worse off and far more vain if it weren’t for them.

the thing about this episode is that there is a difference between 'supportive' and 'freaking stalkers'. If the parents weren't well... her parents, their behaviour would be stalker-territory and that is no good even for a parent. I mean, they literally framed her USED diaper! That is not mentally healthy. Like at all. Rainbow's parents were the opposite end of the extreme from neglect. They were praising their child to the point where it can have long-lasting damage and people need to realize that both sides can be damaging as hell. We are just lucky Rainbow focused more on the 'I am awesome because I work hard and got the skills' and not 'I am awesome by default. I don't have to work to earn it'. Because many kids that are needlessly praised in their youth ends up getting a harsh kick of reality when suddenly just 'being them' is not enough to earn praise in real life.

Yeah..no..These parents really engulfed in her a strong sense of ego that took her literally HALF THE SERIES to overcome! And she still struggles with it and it’s obvious that she has trouble noticing whenever she’s being conceded and she doesn’t like that flaw of her at all! Sometimes even being too supportive is a bad thing, especially when her parents are literally incapable of punishing her! Also SpitFire’s personality is calm stern and chill. I don’t know why people think that she’s not consistent. She’s literally every couch ever! Calm and Chill but also Stern and Dominate when she has to be. ^^

Love how Derpy's eyes just get more and more crossed with time. Also, ever consider that maybe just maybe, Scoots is an orphan? I mean it's heavily implied that the Apple parents died, and the way Scoots talks about Dash's parents sounds to me like someone who never got to experience having parents rather than one who endures abusive ones. Then again, we all tend to project our own experiences onto others which is where such wonderful head canons come from. Though if the show is willing to portray abusive parents such as Spoiled Rich, and yet is only willing to heavily imply death in regards to Pear Butter and Bright Mac, despite the creator's intent, I think there's more evidence for the latter than the former. But who knows, maybe they just put her up for adoption, which is arguably worse.

i love any video featuring Aramau *Edit:* also i hope you guys have a great marriage. *Edit the 2nd:* do you think Rainbow's self-inflated ego, and always using 'AWESOME' to describe anything she does, is a subconscious thing she got from her parent's doting nature? *tercera edición:* 6:33 + 19:25. after watching the Last Crusade where we see Scootaloo's parents......YES! i want Scootaloo to be adopted by RD's parents, at least they won't abandon her, tell her she DOES have worth & that she can do anything! seriously Scoots parents are the worst, they prioritize their WORK, over their daughter, who is having issues with her wings *Something that the MOM, can help with*, and could have an encouraging talk with her DAD when Tiara made fun of her wings during the Flag Episode. so many of Scootaloo's self-esteem or low moral or even view of herself could've been addressed, if her "parent's" were home and talk to her. i get they have important jobs, but i think your CHILD, a living being you brought to life by birth, is more important that whatever strange plant or animal you find in the wild. in fact, why do workaholic people bother having kids, if they're never going to be in the kids life for 90% of the time?

@r.d.gplays265
@r.d.gplays265 5 жыл бұрын
Regarding edit 2nd: I actually have to agree with that to be honest, it would explain why she has such a big ego, but it could come out because she cares what others think as well, and maybe some bad stuff has happened in her life and she tries to forget about it by complementing herself, because we know in the episode " nooby dash" that she was called " rainbow crash" so others might have went farther with that and it could cause dash to just component herself so she can forget it happened because if u catch in about how dash felt back than u can see she let's words get to her, yet it can be caused by both of those things

I found the parents enthusiasm completely hilarious and relatable. I swam all four years in high school and my parents were essentially lite versions of RD’s parents. Cheered me on and supported me even when I failed. The best moment I ever got from them was this past semester in college, I failed a class I was struggling in severely and fought tooth and nail to try and keep my grade afloat but I couldn’t do it. When I admitted defeat, they were completely understanding, they understood how much I struggled and stressed. They’ve always been supportive of me and I realize now that I was lucky how was. So unlike other commenters, I don’t think RD’s parents went too far. I knew plenty of kids in high school who would kill to have parents like RD’s. Granted, some of the antics are ridiculous but this is a cartoon where over the top exaggerations are commonly used to drive home a point within a 22 minute run time.

No

14:55 Eh i'm more on Rainbow's side as i fully understand her feelings. My parents weren't the ones causing this, but i have lashed out at people i care for. The reason however is, as i grew up Agression was my only coping reaction to uncomfortable situations so i wouldn't seem hurt and i thought it was the only way for them to get the message but it was not. The reason why it was my coping reaction is because i was never open with my parents and they couldn't teach me the right way to deal with those situations. Since Rainbow wasn't so much in contact with her parents and not open with them, she never learned a better coping reaction, but also the feelings bottled up inside her so the outcome would've been worse the more she bottled up.

*Hugs Aramau* I'm going to paraphrase Rafiki here but Don't forget the past. The past can hurt... but you can learn from it. The way your parents made you feel growing up? You can make sure that you don't do that with your own family and give your own future kids a better childhood. And I may have a simple explanation for The Podium Flashback... It's shown from Scootaloo's perspective! Scoot's imagining the Pegasi she's met or seen before as little little ponies. She's been on a tour of the weather factory so she could have seen Dash's bullies who work there, she's seen all the wonderbolt's and lightning. She's also missing Gilda who was at flight school with dash and fluttershy who was never a competitive flyer. I don't think Scoots would imagine flutters flying better than dash at any point, even when she's helping her animals. gilda and flutters aren't even in the audience! Also Ditzy Doo as top flyer then gets worse and worse and worse as time goes on and her eyes get more unaligned? if those races/ competitions were anything like the one where dash first performed a rainboom Our favourite muffin mare may have been in a few accidents on track. maybe even... sabotaged? *dun dun DUUUUUUUUUN*

The personal rants from you two really hit home for me. I may not have always been of the greatest mental state, not necessarily emotional, but mental. During my grade school years, I chose the worst possible method of handling my turbulent, unknown feelings - I chose to emotionally lock down. Never opening up about personal issues, never expressing anything other than a flat expression and expressive, but mostly flat spoken tone. For seven years after high school, I was driven into an emotional rut, where all I really did was play Minecraft for nine hours straight each day. My parents have always been good ones, we have had our differences, but at the end of the day, they're still my parents. And only recently has it dawned on me that I have parents who many my age would kill for - Supportive, enthusiastic parents. It may take a while to mend the rift I created with them.

Honestly, I know exactly how Ari feels. Ever since I could remember, my mom and dad were always in control of practically every aspect of my life, always telling me that I need to absolutely perfect in order to succeed in life, and if I ever got a bad grade in anything, or if I did something wrong, they'd make sure I'd feel the pressure of my failure. They treated me much harsher than they ever did my little brother, and it always seemed like they had more love for him than they did for me. I know that it was hard for them to be parents, especially since they're immigrants and have to deal with adjusting to a new country, as well as having to raise 2 kids in said country, but I still... Feel the repercussions of their parenting. It got so bad that at one point in my life, I became deathly afraid of adults, and I'd even start to break down in tears if one ever tried to talk to me. That's when the school had to get involved and practically forced my parents to take me to get some much needed therapy. I managed to overcome most of my pain and anxiety, but.... I know that deep down... The scars are still there... And no amount of time will ever be able to fully heal them, but they can at least be less powerful than they used to be.

Honestly didn't think I'd be going into this video relating so hard to anything... 20:20 I honestly.... could never word it myself.... How I feel... But Aramau and what she's gone through.... I can relate way more then I want to admit... The anxiety.... Things my parents have said to me... Specifically my mother... Its at a point where if I can't bring myself to defend myself I just keep quiet and keep my head down...even as an adult. I've got to the point where I apologise for looking at some one the wrong way... And make self deprecating joke. I find it easier to knock myself down then let some one else take any potential swing. But I hope she's got a better grip on those concerns then I do. Sorry just rambling heh...

Yeah, I relate as well…I feel as though I can never share my true thoughts or opinions with my family. Or even be myself around them, it doesn’t help that they’re very conservative and religious while I’m really not. They don’t know that though. I just feel like I’m trapped, and while I’m old enough to leave, I can’t afford to, friends don’t have enough space for me to move in or anything, so I have to push myself through it and hope for the best. I relate to both Aramau, and your situation, but also differ in a few points. They say they love me, but it really doesn’t feel like they really want to know me and support my own decisions. It makes me question if I’m really moving along the right career path, making the right choices, questioning who I really am as a person. As a result I’m really REALLY indecisive, I don’t do well with confrontation at all and I have such horrible on and off anxiety based on the overall tone I detect from someone. I don’t handle yelling very well either, but that’s a story for another time. Overall, I do really get Aramau’s point in the video, with how parents effect their children. Heck, I’m even learning it in the ECE (Early Childhood Education) program I’m taking.

Honestly, growing up with a silent, strict and barely present dad (not his fault, he was raised from a family from hell) and a workaholic, supportive but not always there mum (she was raised to be a work horse [yes, pun intended]) I learned one thing, as much as a parent should give love and support to their kids, kids can return the love by showing them that all their support have not been in vain. My Dd has been suffering from clinical depression for a decade now and my mum has been struggling to keep the family together. The one time I saw my Dad genuinely happy during his depression was when I finally got a job. Never saw him cry of happiness before.

The problem is that it implies that if someone is well-meaning with their actions, even though they are disruptive at best and dangerous at worst, you can't call them out or ask them to stop because that means you're mean. "Yakity-sax" also has this issue.

Somehow I doubt they'd show something that extreme on My Little Pony. Maybe in some fanfiction.

While I thought that this episode was just ok at best, there were definitely some cringe-worthy moments, but it's nice to see another perspective in a respectful way. This review helped me look at this episode in a better light, to the point where I want to watch it again with this perspective in mind. Great review as usual Josh, I look forward to the next one. P.S. Aramau, you are awesome and you deserve a supportive hug after your story. Stay awesome Ari. ^^

Aramau, you're doing great. And thank you for sharing your insecurities and findings on how different upbringings can affect you as an adult. Kinda brought some habits of mine into light. Anyway, congrats and good luck to you and Scorcher!

Just wanna send a good vibe to the creator. I loved your work growing up and have used the phrase you taught me “you can be right, but wrong at the top of your voice”. To this day I use that when having arguments with friends and it’s helped a lot with how I communicate with my friends. We all get along and respect each other and part of that is knowing how to communicate effectively

This episode actually reminds me of the B plot in Mighty Med’s episode “Evil Gus” In it an alien named Skylar has to have the head of the hospital she’s staying at (Horace) to pretend to be her father at a teacher conference so she can go to human school. However after the conference he ends up continuing to put up the dad act and even barges in on her presentation at a club and states that the other students are not as good as her and even that their parents don’t love them. However it’s revealed after the two talk privately that he always wanted kids but never could and only had his nephew who he doesn’t really treat like family (to be fair his nephew is a jerk but still) and how he got over excited when Skylar wanted him to be her dad and Skylar talks about how she never had true parents due to being made in a pod of solution (alien thing don’t question it) and so in the end Horace does spend more time with his nephew while they cheer Skylar on during a test and Skylar just claims that that’s her family. Now granted the most the two episodes have in common are the parent figures being overwhelming with their love but still couldn’t help but put that out there Thank you all for coming to my ted talk

Well, i have to say it now. My parents are not the best, specially with my emotional health. I had to pull myself out of depression and i'm still dealing with alcoholism on my own (doing much better now thanks to some of my friends). But credit when credit is due. My parents allways gave me support and privacy when i need it, and one time they drove 2 hours to pick me out when i was stuck in another city with no money, place to stay or way to get back home. My dad offered to teach me his proffesion when i was struggling to find a job and my mom allways did her best when i asked her about anything about cooking and housekeeping. I don't allways tell them how much i appreciate those things or that i love them... But i think i'm gonna do it more often, thanks to MLP and this kinds of videos.

This was such a beautiful review! I have wonderful parents, even if we didn't always see eye-to-eye and that caused some problems in our relationship, I wouldn't trade them for any others! Much love to you Arumau, and wishing you the best with your upcoming wedding with Josh!

The things Ari said about her parents... I can sadly relate to her all too well. I'm still living with my parents, because I feel like I can't do anything on my own. Well, I'm glad you have someone like Firebrand, Ari, I hope you two will be happy together.

(sorry long story) Dear ari I kind of understand both side of this coin one where you feel like a parent doesn't appreciate what you do and tell the hard truth or the other like RD's parents where they appreciate too much; when I was little my dad worked everywhere and he was almost never home while my mother kept getting worried and Jealous over what he was doing while still trying to raise me and a lot of times I was either being too fused over by her or not really being cared at all, when I first started playing on band in the 5th grade they put me in trumpet then moved me to the French horn and I loved it and so did my mother a little too much to the point where I just couldn't play in front of her anymore and whenever dad came home told he kept telling me all of the things that take to play an instrument or even be good at doing it and it made me feel wouldn't be able to play. So I stopped practicing all together and eventually lost that spark until I started playing alone without mother's "support" and without hearing my dad telling me what I did wrong. I know to some that this story might not sound bad but to me it was, there is a thing as being to supportive to your child.
