The 109 was designed to fit very tight, like a glove. The idea was to make the plane an extension of the pilot, to become one with the machine. Essentially, the pilot was wearing the plane. Given this plane was developed initially in secrecy and in opposition to the armament restriction treaty that Germany was under, if they were going to perfect one plane, they needed to get this right. Under the circumstances, they did an extraordinary job.

The 190 and 109 both coexisted because neither could fully replicate each other's roles. The FW-190 (specifically the A series) proved an inferior fighter to the 109-being not as light and using a weaker engine mainly to sidestep the supply issues related to the DB601 that the 109 needed so badly. Russian pilots infamously considered it a weak opponent easily outflown by purebread interceptors and B-17 crews noted the 190's awesome firepower but poor performance relegated it to suicidal tail chases. However-its weight brought it advantages in multi-purpose use-being Germany's most effective fighter bomber. It replaced the Stuka in the ground attack role entirely by 1944 because at lower altitudes it was just as deadly as any Allied fighter-and it had the spare payload capacity and sturdy construction necessary to carry added armor panels and bombs. With time-the D model probably would have come to replace the 109 but Focke Wulf couldn't meet demand and by the time the question came up the only thing the Luftwaffe considered viable anymore was the jet/rocket fighters... The 109 was Germany's premiere fighter prewar for good reason-it was totally unmatched by the generation of late 30s fighters it was intended to destroy, and it had such a favorable engine (the DB601 was one of the finest high-performance piston airplane engines ever) that it remained superior to a generation of fighters that even came after it. It took the Supermarine Spitfire-developed against British thinking of the time (emphasizing bomber strikes over fighter defense) to match it. With upgrade programs it remained a viable and deadly fighter throughout the duration of the war as well and-entirely unique to German weaponry of the war-could be developed en masse. The 109 is the most heavily built fighter in history-with a 30,000+ strong production run from 1937 to the very end of the war. The problem with the 109 was its light construction. It was a very role-specific airplane, all it did well was fight other airplanes. It was not very useful for much else. It was too small and too fragile for crucial ground support missions the German Army needed. Its tiny size and weight meant that it required a narrow landing gear base-and it was infamous for challenging landings which killed many inexperienced pilots at difficult grass strips. It remained in production as long as it did due to desperation-not suitability to a changing battlefield.

Only thing that tops the engine noise is the silence when my wife shuts the hell up or leaves the house.

A WW2 P47 pilots joke. While being interviewed by a reporter, the pilot started telling a war story of escorting B17s over Germany. The pilot stated: We were jumped by a squadron of Focke's. The reporter later asked was that the Focke Wulf? and the piliot said : No those Focke's were flying Messerschmitts !!
