Focke Wulf 190 A8 flown by Klaus Plasa chasing a Supermarine Spitfire Mk.18 flown by Rob Davies.
All filmed at the Hangar 10 Fly In 2019.
Thanks to all the people who made that happen. What an awesome event!
If you wonder what engine the Fw190 has. Its an Ash 82-T 14cyl. double row radial with the power and size comparable to the original BMW 801 engine.It was build in Karl Marx Stadt/Chemnitz. So even though it`s a russian design, the engine is still a german engine, at least kind of. ;)

Yeah they sound BEAUTIFUL did you see the bird ? I thought he lost something at about the 5 39 minute I rewind to see what it was and it was a bird a really close call.

Yep...and its takes a lot of balls to ride those beautiful machines...given the fact no safety mechanism were invented for pilots during ww2...once your plane is hit or malfunction there is minimal chance of survival...hats off to those who rides...

I live around the Kent/Sussex county border where this would have been a regular sight in 1940. There is a restored Spitfire that often flies over my house when the owner feels like taking it out for a jolly on a good sunny day. During the war, children would come to this countryside on working holidays to pick the hops for beer brewing and other produce from the 'Garden of England'. Slit trenches were dug in the fields so that the farmers and kids could take shelter when there was an air raid. They would huddle together and watch the dogfights cheering on the Royal Airforce as they defended Britain from invasion. The trenches were very important as sometimes the aircraft would swoop downwards as they were firing, peppering the fields below with errant machine-gun fire. Also, fleeing German aircraft would sometimes have to release their bombs early into the fields below to make a quicker getaway after a botched raid. Souvenirs from German crash sites were very popular with young lads back then, trying to outdo each other with what they could find before the local police and home-guard secured the scene.

@@dubfez_9256 my mom grew up in Wiltshire and told me about the planes that flew over during the war. I’ve had dreams of smoky skies with bombers and fighters flying overhead. What that must have been like. I can only imagine.

Just said the same thing to my dad while watching this for 1st time! Imagine being a civilian on the ground during WW2 & seeing something like this come outta no where over top of you! Except back then it'd be a fight to the death with machine gun fire & bullets ripping through the air. Crazy to think about!

My great grandfather was out farming in Germany when a p51 and a bf 109 was fighting and he recovered a shell casing from one of the birds

@@sudscoupe Formidable or impressive? Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder but to my eyes it's quite an ugly, hefty looking machine. That means nothing regarding its performance and effectiveness. And I'd rather be in an efficient ugly aircraft than an inefficient pretty one. But in a beauty contest, it doesn't get past the first cut.

It's really incredible the difference in sound between the two. The smoothness of the Spitfire vs the low rumble and popping of the FW190, which makes it sound like a dragster. So beautiful.

fun fact: the fw190 was almost cancelled because one of the many problems was the 190 A-0 [prototype] overheated so badly that it had to be watered down just after taxiing to the runway. Even the A-1 [first war production] suffered crazy overheating issues and had to have their engines replaced so often.

I always made the analogy that the FW was more like a torquey V8 car and the Merlin was more like a low displacement v10.

I was a kid in England all through the war. I saw some of this stuff for real. Even today the sound of a Rolls-Royce Merlin gives me goose-bumps.

@@zigglewiglerost of the spitfires used the Rolls-Royce Merlin. Only the Spitfire F Mk.XIV and after used the Rolls-Royce Griffon Although the one in the video does have the Rolls-Royce Griffon, as you can see a bump above the exhaust, which is exclusive to spitfires with the Griffon engine

The mosquito and the Lightning look funny but the Lightning cockpit design doesnt pickle my pickle. Spitfire.... come on child, grow some balls will yah!

Spit is hands down better looking than the Cadillac of the skies, P - 51. The whole world agrees with me...Spit...the most gorgeous WWII aircraft. FW etc are good too..Spit is stunning. And of course, the Merlin / Griffon sound, too ! You said it "for me..". Yep, for U !

The Fw 190 take off did not look so good to me almost marginal as if the pilot started to climb then had to level off to gain speed, the Spitfire was off the ground much sooner and just climbed away effortlessly.

Unfortunately there is only one theoretically able to fly ( in Seattle ), but not used for that as being the only left in that condition. Shame for us fans, but understandable.

Lots of speculation from people who never flew either plane. My uncle, Irving Kennedy, was a Spitfire pilot in WW2 who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Bar. In “Black Crosses Off My Wingtip”, he wrote about a duel he had with a German fight leader in a FW190. Although my uncle had perviously shot down several 190s, this pilot gave him the dogfight of his life. My uncle knew his late model Spit could outturn the 190, but the German would not try to turn with him, instead zooming up and flick turning, and coming back down. Neither pilot could gain the advantages and the fight ended in a draw. Even when flying his favorite model, Spit IX, my uncle had great respect for the FW190. The ME109 was much easier to shoot down, although the G model was tough opponent in some circumstances. With regard to a turning fight, my uncle said he could turn the Spit until the g forces caused his field of vision to decrease to the size of a nickel. It was inhumanly possible to turn faster without blacking out. After numerous flights, G forces caused permanent damage to his back, The Canadian government acknowledged this problem and provided an extra medical allowance on all Spit pilots pensions! He said he never worried about an unexpected stall in turns because the Spit would shake long before stall, and he could back off slightly. In summary, from the mouth of a Spit Ace, the FW190 and the Spit IX were well matched. The Spit V was inferior to the FW190. The Spitfire IX was superior to the Me109 (but the G model could be troublesome).

That’s a very well balanced analisys of either planes performance. After reading so many aviation books in my life I came to the conclusion ME-109 Gustavs were heavier and not as maneuvrable as F models due to increased armament and armour. Only K models improved this tendency later in the final months of the war by introducing more powerful engines. Regarding the 190, only D models were on par with Griffon variants of the Spitfire right?

@@Youtubax The Bf-109's switch to the DB605 from the earlier DB601 took place during the G-series. The later G-series and the Ks which were produced should have been pretty similar in performance to each other.

Remember this. What you see here is a display. Throttles feathered back to ensure engine longevity, after all, they’re vintage. But back in the day these would be scrapping with engine at full throttle and full boost. The merlin/griffon had a throttle “gate” the could be used for a limited amount of time for extra power if you were in serious shit. The Germans used a different method to gain extra when needed. But what you see here is a fraction of what these bad boys are actually capable of if they were in a bad mood. 💪

@@MrTubbymarshall Utterly correct. While wonderful to watch, those two planes are flying nowhere near to their limits, or beyond. Understandable with such Vintage aircraft, but is an unavoidable shame that we cannot see them fly while stressed to the limit. Never had such a quick, unexpected smile on my face. Damn the sound in the first seconds when they fly past! Instant smile across my face. THE SOUND PEOPLE! How bizarre it must have been in the war. Fear for your life but at the same time mesmerized by the orchestra above you. Amazing that such things still happen and we get to see real planes fly like back in the day. Modern times are so dull and governed by reason and cost. This is just history and enjoyment!

Until I watched this video I didn't realize how short the 190's wingspan was in comparison to the Spitfire. It's great to see these legendary war birds airborne today. Props to the folks who take the time and money to restore and maintain these beautiful beasts. Thanks for the upload.

Hi mate! This is my idea of heaven!! Even fast jets are a favourite. Military aviation is a hobby, and this honest to goodness engineering is admirable. It goes to show that old school ways last much longer. You don't see Tornado, Jaguar even Phantoms flying around now. Shame. And the sooner airshows are back, the better!!!

Somehow, I feel more connected to history even watching this. The sights, the sounds, the colours, the growls of the engines. This is exactly what the pilots and mechanics and groundcrews would have experienced, in full colour. Of course, they experienced all of this along with the savagery and the terror and the life-and-death courage and the loss of life. A magnificent video! Thank you for sharing. And like others have said, thank you for not drowning out the raw footage with music and other stuff!! The engines were music in themselves.

ground crew could hear if there was something wrong with the engine in those flyby, my grandfather was a german stuka pilot later converted into a fighter due to lack of pilots and the increasing bombers over germany. he said when stukas took off under normal conditions they would do a flyby over the airfield before forming up and climbing with the ground crew listening to them and watching for weird exhaust smokes etc. something they didn't do later in the war with the 109's

@@blockboygames5956 thank you, i'm fascinated by those years, mostly for the technology innovations that came along with the 2 world wars. if you read a book about the early days of ww1 and compare it to something that talks about the end of ww2 it seems like a whole century went past. we went from manual labor in the fields to the moon in like 40 years time with 2 horrible men slaughtering wars in them.. it's for sure worth taking a deep look into what happend those years

And we advanced so so fast. If we do not learn, then we will make the same mistakes. We mostly don't understand why the Nazis and the Socialists and the Communists did what they did.

The spit fire, hurricanes and a Lancaster bomber often fly past my house during the summer and the sound of them always fills me with pride for my ancestors who faught for my freedom. @@PHX76 Superficial resemblance due to engine type. The FW was far faster and more powerful and tough, the Zero-Sen lighter and more maneuverable with much greater range (critical for fighting in the Pacific).

@@ktmexc1358 Yes the allied did the same in Japan at the end of the war P-51 crew would take of from some forward base in the pacific just to gun down "domestic activities" to disrupt the japanese moral. They straffed workers in field fishing ships etc. Those missions were often carried out by young pilot new to the front happy to prove their valor. They also bomb the shit of occupied european countries. A shame that such magnificent aircraft were designed to do such terrible things.

To drive a fighter in ww2 you'd better be young, athletic and also reckless I'd say, with the fresh & fast mind of that age. The air force, especially fighters, was (and still is) not for everyone, you must be the top, ppl enlisted for it, and I think it was a great honour and privilege for a young man and his family to be in. Air fighters also inherit some of the old nobility of the army that was in the cavalry.

I bet that bad boy's torque would require a ton of rudder? I read where special high altitude models had Daimler Benz engine with supercharger and could easily get to FL410? Holy Sh%$! Wow! That's what I call piston power!

I'm have been working on the out skirts of Cambridge for the last year and have the honour of seeing the Spitfire regularly flying overhead. They made a low level pass over the site a few months back so I started waving and the pilot seemed to tip his wings side to side saying hello back. It made my day..

There were many upgrades and variants to both airplanes. Reviews I read seem to give a slight edge to the Focke Wulf 190, nicknamed the Butcher Bird. Later in the war the skill of the pilots often made the difference. The allies had so many more planes than the Germans who continued to lose skilled pilots. Younger inexperienced pilots had to fill the void and were easier prey. The pilots of WW1, WW2, and Korea were the romantic age of dogfights. Today fighters lock on target before visual contact and radar guides the missile.

The Fw 190 D late in the war couldn't match the Spitfire Mk XIV which was in service some months earlier just as the Fw 190 A didn't match the Spitfire Mk IX.

The way the Fw190 drops down just after 6:50 is so incredibly beautiful. It used to be called “the Hun in the sun,” because the Luftwaffe pilots were famous for dropping down out of the sun as though they’d come out of nowhere. “Boom and Zoom” tactics is i think what they call it. Pilots like Erich Hartmann, Günther Rall, Walter Nowotny were famous for it and it helped them achieve such remarkable kill counts. These tactics really suited the characteristics of the German fighter planes. RAF fighters like the spitfire I think preferred to get into complex long engagements where they could out manoeuvre the bf109s/fw190s with their superior turning circles and rolls etc.. Please someone correct me if anything i have said is wrong, I just love learning how the different ww2 fighters acted and the different strengths/weaknesses and tactics of each country etc.. Myself i love the German approach of quality over quantity despite the fact that it wasn’t effective in winning the war, the stuff that they made was just so amazing.

@ Spitfire quite easily out-turns 109. P-51 and Bf 109 are closely matched in turning dogfight at low to medium altitudes.

I briefly read through the comment section. Yes, that was definitely a slip, idk if there was enough rudder to qualify as a full side slip(it’ll be at least 100+kph to200+kph in energy advantage in the same altitude to qualify for a boom and zoom or to have any chance of a safe disengagement). Slipping it self is used to burn energy and in a fighter like the 190 which have great energy retention is pretty useful. While yes one may say 190s historically is more used in boom and zooming, remember that they also produced F8 variants(take a A8 up the armour, add hard points, and different canopies) which I would go as far as saying the most successful fighter bomber of WWII. In such configuration when engaged the fighter is found to be in a lower energy state then the enemy which leads to another strength in the 190-defensive flying. One last point a later variant of the 190 like the Dora (d12 or d13) will be able to our turn climb stall better than a spitfire mkII, while there’s nothing a 190 A5 pilot can do towards a griffin. A P51 mkI will struggle against almost all fighters of WWII due to lack of power. Comparing fighters is no justice without comparing the variants because there was simply too much changes that happened throughout. If you’re interested in dog fighting look into energy trapping, energy conservation,(109,p51,p38,spitfire, typhoons, tempest, lavockin) boom and zoom (p47,190, Me163,or anytime you’ve got so much energy your aircraft compresses and you’re forced to disengage then re-engage). Turn fighting itself is a art on its own it’s not head cut off turning like many thinks there’s a lot of maneuvering. It’s about person coming out of a scissor with that little more speed than they planned to or the person that dropped a better hammer head when the other one briefly spinned.... and if you’re into more of the physics and engineering aspect of things wonderwaffle is the place to look

@@shanekeene4242 thx for the info didnt know that. I was talking about the general rule for FW v Spit which you hear most of the old fighter pilots refer to especially during the BOB. My Dad was in the RAF during Ww2 as a navigator/gunner in Lancs..

@@Micro-Lander Oh I dunno. I’ve seen an F35 being flown and it was pretty damn cool! The sound that it made went right through you, tens of thousands of horsepower.

As much as I would not like to have lived back in the Second World War, gosh to be a child experiencing these sounds must have been amazing despite all the horrors on the Home Front.

Famtastic footage! Thankyou for bringing us this. Both were beautiful planes. The gorgeous sound of that RR merlin engine gives me the chills . I got to sit in a spitfire when i was about 9 years old. Im 60 now and I'll never forget it.

​@@laurensvannijvel3256 oh you would hear the enemy dive from above if you we're caught off gaurd. They weren't giving full boost (full throttle) while flying only when dogfighting to avoid the engine seizing and thats when you'd hear the prop spinning towards you

@@herbsl Sie sprachen nicht von einem, sondern von Flugzeugen, und diese waren nunmal Waffen (im weiteren Sinne), im engeren Sinne führten sie Waffen mit ("bewaffnet"). Davon abgesehen, sehe auch ich, welchen Innovationsschub gerade die Me-262 verkörperte, ihr elegante, exzellente Formgebung. Aber Schönheit bei Tötungs- und Zerstörungsmaschinen?

@@dr.-ing.ansgarmatthes9688 Denk an Kain und Abel und ihre Steingeschichte, die "etwas" aus dem Ruder lief.. im "weiteren Sinne" ist ein Stein oder Stock eine Waffe, sogar wenige Liter Wasser kann jemanden töten. Auch ein Stein kann schön sein, so what? Schäm dich ob deiner Torheit, hier solchen Unsinn zu verbreiten und mir die eleganten Flugzeuge schlecht reden zu wollen! Solch ein benehmen als "Dr.-Ing.", ich hege Zweifel... PS. Krieg dem Kriege

Imagine having a peaceful walk outside breathing some fresh air or probaply working on your farm and suddenly see those 2 planes fighting in the air. What a beautiful yet terrifying sight.

That's the Merlin Rolls Royce power plant. Didn't matter if it was in a Spitfire Marine or a North American P-51 Mustang. I hear it often enough living under KVNY runway 16 R here in California.

Um, sorry, but that mark spit has a griffon engine (fitted from mark XII onwards), see the raised troughs over the engine cowling ... Totally different sound ...

Focke Wulf had computer controlled engine management system called the Kommandogerät (command-device): in effect, an electro-mechanical computer which set mixture, propeller pitch (for the constant speed propeller), boost, and magneto timing

I think this Fw 190 A-8 has a Russian ASh-82 radial engine. There's atleast one airworthy Fw 190 A-5 with an original BMW 801 radial.

@@Wallyworld30 The Fw 190 pilot would have to sling it around just to stand a chance, especially against a Spitfire Mk XIV, much faster, better acceleration, better climb and more maneuverable. I have heard that no Spitfire Mk XIV's were ever shot down in combat, they did shoot down Bf 109's, Fw 190's and Me 262's

Barrie Rodliffe I don’t think there were that many experienced German pilots left on the west front when the mk XIV was deployed in the summer of -44.

@@Wallyworld30 Fw 190 pilots were rather afraid of the Spitfire from 1942 with the introduction of the Spitfire Mk IX to the end of the war that seems to have been the case, the same applies to any Luftwaffe fighter.

@@dexgeta.9940 I couldn't tell you personally. Each craft I imagine would have their own strengths and weaknesses. Factor this in with the experience and skills of the pilots piloting them and it may not be such an easy pick.

@@dexgeta.9940 Of these two there is no question, this Fw 190 had a top speed some 45 mph slower, had over 2,000 ft/min lower rate of climb, had a service ceiling some 10,000 feet less.

@@barrierodliffe4155 the Mk XIV and the D-9 190 were quite even. The Mk IX and the 190A were as well, but the Mk XVIII here never really fought much at all.

My face hurts from the ear to ear grin I have had since hearing the these two giants of WW2. Just astounding! What a sound! There are not enough superlatives in either language to properly express the sound of these legendary machines. How magnificent!

Watching these warbirds in action that were in the same era my military family lived and fought in is truly a timeless treasure. I love WWII Warbirds! I'm so glad to be part of this heritage even though I wasn't born then! 💙

The only original flying is with the Flying Heritige collection. It was found in Russia in the 90’s, and restored by Paul Allen the Microsoft guy, he owned the Flying Heritige collection.

CeLeRy_ StIcK Yes ! I will definetly consider going to the United States now and visit the Flying Heritige museum. They are restoring a ME262 with original jet engines.
