Keep in mind that when it opens, the CRL will have the same capacity as a 7 lane road and that's running at less than half capacity. When it's up and running at full capacity, the CRL will have the same capacity as a 15 lane road. If the trains are reconfigured to be more like metro trains, the capacity of the CRL might even pass that of a 20 lane road (though this option hasn't been considered yet). Trains have much higher capacity than a motorway.

When this opens. It will be a game changer for Rail in Auckland. When will Auckland learn. More roads does not equal quicker travel times. Also the longer we leave rail projects, the more expensive it will be. Either we invest now, or our grandchildren invest 10 fold.
@aleksandriakirkland450610 ай бұрын
The project wasn't designed to serve people in the CBD, it was designed to increase capacity across the entire network and reduce travel times to central Auckland in particular
@rp778410 ай бұрын
Sydney began building their 6 Kilometre Rail City Loop when their population was just over 1 million, so Auckland's population is large enough to warrant this vital link. The huge costs are mainly down to inflation caused by recent global events, but also by NZ being inexperienced at building infrastructure projects of this calibre, not having the work practices, skill requirements, resources and processes from the get go has contributed to high prices. You also need to factor in the depth of which they bored and the soil type, those aspects also contributed to high costs. It's a short distance true, but the benefits are very fortuitous for Auckland. Opening up more access points in the CBD. Incentivising investment in high density Urban corridors. Incentivising Urban intensification along transit corridors and transport hub's. Doubling the capacity and frequency of the rail network. Increasing the number of people who have access to public transport and enhancing the rail networks accessibility. And it's also caught the eye of alot of developers who are building in the CBD, all of which would have been unlikely had the CRL not gone ahead. So the CRL is a necessary expenditure, it hasn't even finished construction yet and it already has attracted investment into the city, so it's a pretty sound project.

go and look up all the locomotives of NZ on wiki, even in the days of steam we imported a large amount of them, mainly from america and the uk back then, and most of the diesels come from america, canada and USA. So no, its really not uncommon to import this sort of stuff, we probably ave the expertise in NZ to do it still, but we wouldnt be able to produce enough to be price competitive with the big builders overseas (economies of scale and all that jazz)
@RodneyAvery-o2q6 ай бұрын
New Zealand's domestic train requirements are not large enough to justify its' own train manufacturing industry. It's simply cheaper to buy from overseas, preferably an existing design, modified for local conditions.
