I was so happy to hear you explain why contouring should be done with a grayish-brown color in order to look natural! Real shadows aren’t warm, and “contouring” with a bronzer, while it can be very pretty and is a lovely way to warm up the skin, will never realistically simulate shadows on the skin (e.g., to narrow the nose). You always provide such smart, well-informed beauty advice! ❤️

I was always told when applying Blush to my mature face not to smile bc when I smile n apply Blush than relax my face the Blush drops which for me n my face I want it to look lifted not droopy so since learning this I never smile when applying Blush instead what I do is find my cheek bone than start applying Blush 2 finger widths from my nose going slightly in an upward direction towards my hairline than using a large soft buffing brush I lightly buff Blush, Highlight n Bronzer together I love the look it creates I jus wished I liked the face I put it on!!!!!!
@danielleking38805 жыл бұрын
I am older then you and have a round face and a double chin. When I contour, bronze, blush and highlight, if I go too low, even as low as you have it, it really pulls my face down. But at almost 50, everything is headed south. I place my contour alittle above where you place it, to give it some lift. I am also extremely pale. As I have pmle, or what people like to call a sun allergy, I rock the prison pallor look year round. For me, my bronzer cant be placed too low. It took me forever to understand that, as I'm cool toned, the warm colors cant go too close to where a shadow would be on my face, which is where almost everyone puts bronzer. I found only a few videos from gurus that use a slightly different approach by contouring under the cheekbone and bronzing directly on the cheekbone on the high planes of the face. I contour by flicking my brush upwards and across in where the hollow just starts to dip and I bronze on the cheekbone and flick down. This makes the contour and bronzer strongest where I place the brush and gently fade together somewhere in the middle. Then I pinpoint highlight just the very highest point of my cheekbone on my bronzer. For blush, I cant place it on the apples because, again, my apples are heading south. So i go just above the apple and blend back between the contour and bronzer. I have a high forehead so i also contour my hair line. My double chin is something i have not been able to figure out. Not without it looking like i added a brown ring around my neck. It looks like dirt. But I guess what I'm saying is simalar to what you said, that no 2 people can do it the same, dont just follow a video you see, really look at your face shape, and what you want and need to accomplish. It's not a one size fits all thing. I had never heard about using a flash light, so I tried it. And while I have a more rounded face, my cheek bones are high up on my cheek. And are kind of pronounced under my fat cheeks. So the light test kind of proved that my placement is sort of right, even though it would be considered high to most people.
@DJAshe135 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Lisa, for mentioning forehead contouring. I, also, have a small forehead so I never contour that area. I've seen so many women who have small foreheads, yet contour there anyway. It just makes a small forehead look even smaller. So loving this series!

Also wanted to say love this natural approach to contour and highlight. I’m close to your age. It seems like most of the KZbinrs do such a dramatic look that I just don’t like on me. Thanks so much!
@luvzdogz5 жыл бұрын
I agree with her observation that many people just copy what they see others doing and don't necessarily do what's the best technique for their own face. I've been confused watching KZbinrs that pile on the contour AND bronzer cuz I always think, why both products? What's the difference really? Only thing I could determine is bronzer usually has some shimmer. This tutorial was so informative and finally helped me understand the difference!

I heard that after 35 you are not supposed to smile when adding blush because when you stop smiling your blush ends up next to your lips. I’d like to see you try blush higher on your cheekbones for a more youthful look. Could you demonstrate that look for us to compare?

This was a ripper video Lisa! Thank you so much for unravelling the mysteries of face powders! A while ago I read that peach based blushes are best for mature skin. Just wondering if there is any truth to that. And that cream based products are better too. They scare me a little bit as I feel I don't have as much control. This could simply be because I'm not used to them. I reside in South Australia where we swelter through summer but the rest of the year is lovely.

You explain things so well - I appreciate that. Is your bronzer brush natural or synthetic hair, since MAC stopped making natural hair brushes? Do you prefer one or the other? I don’t know if I’ve seen a tutorial anywhere that addresses trying to widen your face - since my cheeks are falling and my face has narrowed, I don’t need to carve anything, but is there a way to widen the face for a more youthful look? Thanks!!:)
@lisajmakeup5 жыл бұрын
Hi Wendy!! The brush I have is natural , it’s an older one from Mac. Synthetic fibers have come a long way and a lot of brands are moving towards this fiber , IT has some great options for soft synthetics ☺️ and to widen I would concentrate a lighter color of powder on the area you want to widen or bring out to give a more fuller appearance

I am really enjoying you breaking down these steps. You are naturally beautiful without makeup💕 I have seen some makeup gurus say not to put blush on apples of cheeks if you have more mature skin. Thoughts?
@lisajmakeup5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Vivian!! I know some like to place blush a little lower and further back than the apples, I think its a matter of preference, but I think the reasoning is it can narrow the face to place on apples and blend up, and placing lower and blending down gives a fuller face which some want if they feel their face and skin has lost volume as we age.

Thank you, LIsa! I really LOVE and APPRECIATE your videos. Your explanations are very thorough, and I really appreciate all the subtleties you explain, regarding application techniques and selection and use of brushes. Your videos reinforce the makeup application techniques I learned, decades ago, and understand, and your thoroughness and explanations have allowed me to improve and refine my makeup application. AND I am learning how to better use the variety of products and brushes in which I've invested. I only recently found your channel, last week, and your videos have already helped me with my application techniques and inspire me to continue to improve so I can present myself in the most flattering way possible. I am on a tight budget; but, your recommendations have already allowed me to CONFIDENTLY buy some new makeup products and makeup brushes, without the uncertainty that I might be wasting my money on another product that I won't like or know how to use. I do watch and enjoy the content of other KZbin make-up channels; but, only yours has filled the makeup education 'niche' for me, that I needed. I would love to know if you might have any recommendations for a drugstore contour palette. Thank you.....

Brava, Lisa! You had me at cool tone shades for contour. ❤️I know it's become de rigueur on YT makeup videos to issue the disclaimer that any given way isn't the "right" way but, know what? There *is* a right way! 😉You nailed some basic yet essential concepts with this video, and in a very engaging, approachable manner. I'm not a content creator (i.e. no repercussions for me) so I'm just going to come out and say it: If your "contour" is a 4 inch wide orange slash down your cheek, it's wrong. If your entire face shines to heaven in a nearly dark room, you'll want to rethink your highlighting technique. Sharing this one where needed, for sure. Thank you!

Lisa, I love these videos, so informative & educating. Thank you for sharing. Just to get it right, though, contouring is supposed to be done with cool tones- true. Bronzing is warm. I’ve been just trying to understand it for a long time & why not ask a professional 😉 Again, thank you for the great content 💐
