This FocusOn episode features Alisa Clark, Anderson Aggrey and Dennis Groenewald, who work at New Zealand Steel’s iron-sand mining operation at Waikato North Head! The mining and use of iron sands (rather than ore) by New Zealand Steel and Pacific Steel (NZ) Ltd. makes this business somewhat unique in the iron- and steelmaking world; this is also a chance to look at the process whilst it transitions from a bucket-wheel to a dry-mining method, which leads to a more efficient operation.

Note: The residual tailings at Waikato North Head are inert, no chemicals are added, there is no grinding involved in processing and the iron sand contains no toxic constituents.
