Thanks for sharing. Perhaps consider GPS. A simple system with egnos signal will do, to be more accurate with drilling.

The 1200 was the easiest tractor to reverse a trailer into a tight spot as you could wind lock on and re point the trailer without moving. Had 2 of them only let dow buy week hydraulics 👍

If it makes you feel any better I work for a beet contractor in Lincs and yields aren’t very good at all this year, from the camera it doesn’t look a bad crop in comparison to some wev lifted this year.

Hi Dan, nice video. Thanks for explaining the issue with the loss of beets. Wouldn´t it be best to change the drilling to 5 rows or decrease to four instaed of wasting the high value feed. Farm on, Andreas
@CowfarmerDan3 жыл бұрын
Yes, drilling will be different next year.

Do u put cattle into the field after pulling the beet to eat the leaves and loose beet

Sometimes we do, but not this year as everything is housed. There's nothing really to pick up anyway.

Nice to see the 1200 hauling, I’d kinda like to see the 698 on that trailer to see how she handles it (probably slowly!) don’t tell me the new drill is your dad planting by hand!🤣🙈
@CowfarmerDan3 жыл бұрын
Nearly did put the 698 on the trailer, but the hitch needs a repair and the clutch is on the way out. A day on the trailer could have finished it off!

Fodder yielded well down here which isn't unusual. Always make sure back yourself up and it's selling well so what we lost out on straw we seem to be making up for in beet! Your not far from me about 25 miles!

How long after harvesting the beets do you feed to the cows Dan, as what bits of green tops left need to wilt, or else it's upset cows guts and the poop fly's in liquid, nasty amounts? Also how much do you feed: I fed up to 12 kgs on the autumn calving herd I was at pre 2016. I used to put it in last to the shelbourne reynolds twin auger,leg it mix 5 mins and feed. It gave all the cows chance to get beet rather than the first in eat it if it was pre chopped v small. Cows do love fodder beet!!
@CowfarmerDan3 жыл бұрын
We don't very often feed the tops, but if we do they're well wilted. The cows get up to 10kg of beet per day.
@bobcrawford21053 жыл бұрын
Same trouble with fodder beet 40 years ago , grow to far out of ground so topper knife no chance of clean cut
@bobpaterson18453 жыл бұрын
How is the field yielding Dan 🤔 are u gonna have enough see u right through the winter 🤔👍
@CowfarmerDan3 жыл бұрын
Yes, we'll have enough even though yields seem to a a little down on normal.
@AlextheDutchDairyfarmer3 жыл бұрын
Very nice to see how the harvester works. Do you feed the beets instead of maize silage?
@CowfarmerDan3 жыл бұрын
Yes, grass silage and fodder beet make up the diet.
@jon250sx3 жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same. I didn't know cows ate beets. I thought it was mostly for pigs. Does it need to be processed at all or can they eat it the way it is?
@CowfarmerDan3 жыл бұрын
They can eat them whole, but we chop them in a mixer wagon with the grass silage.
@laytonphillips66673 жыл бұрын
Great video dan and drone footage is excellent, good to see the 1200 earning her keep, what will you put into the beet land once its harvested? And will you do your own clutch repair on the 698? 6 row drill next year.
@CowfarmerDan3 жыл бұрын
Grass will go in in the spring, and yes, we will do the clutch ourselves. Good guess on the drill too.
@Theorimlig3 жыл бұрын
Why grow fodder beets instead of grain for feed? :) I think they're hardly grown here in Sweden, though there's still some sugar beet growing down south.
@CowfarmerDan3 жыл бұрын
Because it's a palatable extra forage.
@ianthomson46093 жыл бұрын
Another great video, Dan. Love the drone camera views. When reversing the trailer with the 1200, do you steer the opposite way to a normal tractor? Tried to work it out, but just got more confused. Used to drive a mix of artics and wagon & draw bars, and always had to engage brain before reverse!
@roberthiggins64013 жыл бұрын
You steer the same.

Drill only Four rows or add another drill and do Six rows., When your pushing the beet up with the loader do you get much rot setting in on the beet cut by the bucket?
@CowfarmerDan3 жыл бұрын
No rot, it's the same as just cutting the tops off.

Great video again Dan. 1200 is made for the job. Why fodder beet and not sugar beet?
@CowfarmerDan3 жыл бұрын
Because we feed it to the cows.

It's a biennial plant so has a 2 year growing cycle, and will not rot in it's first winter.

Is the 178 too small for the beet trailer or will we see it at the beet
@CowfarmerDan3 жыл бұрын
I'm not happy with the hitch on the 178 so wouldn't want a heavy trailer on there. Also you really need rear view mirrors to keep close to the harvester, but not hit the tyre.

Suppose everywhere is different. We find the topper does more than enough but then it's a flail type, only beet we see that has low above ground % are the white beets, enermax magnum etc, even though the yellow beet varieties, cagnotte, geronimo etc, claim low above % there just not!
