It's not just the daytime running lights that make people think their lights are on, even though they are really dim compared to the actual headlights, it's the always lit and electronic instrument clusters that do it too. It used to be that you had to turn on your lights to see your gauges at night and you knew they were off if your gauges weren't lit. Now gauges are always lit up or they are part of an LCD screen that's always lit even when your lights are off. But people also generally go through life with their heads firmly ensconced in their posteriors. I see people all the time that make me wonder how Darwin's Law hasn't caught them yet! Glad you had a nice Christmas with the fam and I hope 2025 is better to you and more prosperous for you!

It took me a while to get used to that in my car. I hate it. Turn them on and off with the headlights. Also, many people have tinted tail lights, another stupid idea.

And having the driver side light pointed upward too much can really cause problems for oncoming vehicles! I have to hold my left hand in front of me on occasion to block the LED lights, even after my cataract surgery.

I've tried to make a point of doing a pre trip like you professionals especially after dark. I've experienced that don't have a clue what the other driver is trying to tell me. Talk about feeling silly after driving miles and miles with your turn signal on ha . It's a good idea for everyone to just keep reviewing driving skills every ounce in awhile. @@ClutchTrucker Sorry, my mistake! Looked at it again. What I thought was a “1” is actually a _down arrow_ so that’s likely the only adjustment point.

Love your “Trading Places” piece. One of my favorite movies. I know what you mean about 4-wheelers driving with the daylight running lights. See it all the time. Another favorite is drivers going down the road with one turn signal on.

The prices for OEM parts are ridiculous, on any vehicle. A factory Freightliner replacement for a headlight shouldn't cost $1000 and you shouldn't have to replace the entire unit.

Fog tends to reflect light in my opinion. Some people have no clue when it comes to lights and night and in foggy weather. Then they will be upset if they get into an accident and their found at fault. Happy motoring!

You have to remember the left headlight is new and has a completely clear lens and the right side has aged and is not clear as the one on the new one

Yep. That’s part of the problem. This is a 2018 after all. And I think both headlight assemblies were original

I bought a brand new Equinox late 2020. With reduced traffic on the roads for 2020 - 2022 I never really noticed an issue, but starting around daylight saving/winter at the end of 2023 I was getting high beamed on a fairly regular basis on my drive home from work. It got to the point that if I was driving when it was dark, I had to have one finger on the high beam stick just to blast people back. At my next dealership service, I asked them to also check the headlights to see if they needed to be re-aimed or something. They charged me $100 to tell me that they are working perfectly fine and aimed correctly (still the original factory lights that came with the car). They said that new headlights are just so much brighter than old lamps, and that drivers that have not gotten a new vehicle in a while just are not used to to the new brighter HID and LED headlights. I will say, I do now relish the opportunity to high beam someone back that should not have high beamed me to begin with.
@JohnHallgren2 күн бұрын
From someone who’s in the senior citizen category and who had a cataract surgery on my good eye, those new headlights can be almost blinding and thus I might wonder if the driver has high beams on or not, and have occasionally flashed my old halogens at them. If they respond with actual high beams like you say at end, I could be blinded enough to not be able to see. So remember that possibility, ok?
@hushpuppy32 күн бұрын
That is a valid point, but it all boils down to the golden rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If you high beam someone, be prepared to be high beamed back. Flashing high beams is one thing, but most drivers seem to take it personally and leave them on until your return the gesture in kind.
@JohnHallgren2 күн бұрын
@ my issue is that in some cases, I can’t tell if they are low or high because of how bright the low beam is so I can misinterpret it as high beam and flash mine. But a return flash with those really bright lights, even quickly, can make me loose vision for a few seconds.
@patrickinottawa272 күн бұрын
@@JohnHallgren My solution because of a similar problem, in the city it's not an issue because your surrounded by light, but on the highways or where there is minimal lighting, I keep the visor down. When the bright light are bothering me, I straighten up and sit a little higher, the majority of the light is blocked by the visor, but I can still see the road for a decent distance beneath the visor. Try it.
@JohnHallgren2 күн бұрын
@ unfortunately, with my height being as I say, 5’-21”, I can’t really put the visor down because that’s part of the area of the windshield that I am normally looking at. My hair is almost touching the headliner and that’s with the seat reclining some. It’s when lights are flashed that is the real problem. If they’re steady, I can use my left hand to partially block it.

Driving up to a building or door works good to adjust your headlights. I see people Driving everyday with only daytime running lights on the dash lights are usually on too . I think a lot of people like to disable the auto turn on feature, dumb. I can't remember the last time I turned my headlights on in my pov auto feature works just fine and it's been out for atleast 25 years on vehicles

To add to the daytime running lights. Newer vehicle's have a light switch with various positions including Auto and OFF. If he had left it on AUTO, his lights would go on and off automatically. In Canada, we still see the occasional bozo driving with only the daytime running lights and we've had them since 1991, that's 33 years. They were introduced because people wouldn't think to turn on their lights during the day to make them more visible when the skies turned dark and we got hit wth heavy rain or fog and the number of head-on accidents was climbing. There are also times when certain color vehicles will blend into the background and if your driving into the Sun you cannot see them. If you can't see them, there is no chance to be a good defensive driver and avoid them. Long story short, don't blame the daytime running lights just because some people are stupid. The accident stats proved their worth a long time ago.
