In this video I demonstrate how you can potentially repair a double-pane window with a bad seal. There is no way to permanently fix a window seal failure like this without replacing the whole window, but this method may help you get a few more years out of your broken window! Thanks for watching!
PERFORM HEATING CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY OR THE WINDOW COULD CRACK!
Update: This window is still 100% clear and fog free as of October 2021. The original repair filmed here was done in May 2020.

Great video. Here's a little tip we use when we replace a window on an airliner. You take a small cup and put a little hot water and dish soap in it and mix it up with your finger. Don't get it all sudsy but mix it up well. If you now dip your finger in that soapy water you'll be able to run your finger along that bead of sealant and mold it perfectly without the sealant sticking to your finger or making a mess on your window.

Obviously some projects take longer, but this exemplifies an excellent video… to the point, articulate, informative, easy to follow and well-filmed. Not chit chatty - most of us are in a bit of a hurry when looking for help - but a brief pan to the dog followed by a quip was perfect for connecting with viewers, most of us dog lovers as well. Great job.

Thanks, this was very useful. I put a strip of masking tape over the glass, applied the silicone, and then used my finger to smooth it out. Took the tape off before it dried. This gave a perfectly straight and even line across the bottom of the glass. It really looks like it was part of the window.

I was thinking the same. Id put the silicone all the way around just to keep it uniform around the window. Also id do every window like this that wasnt newer regardless of whether it had this issue or not. Keeps a uniform look and keeps the risk down of seal failure.

Though that works to get a nice finish,most masking tape will leave a small step with the silicone. Potentially giving a place for water to sit. There are masking tapes that have a tapered edge,and do cost more,but they leave a much cleaner edge.

The molding (or glazing bead) is not part of the window (IGU) seal. If the IGU seal has failed, the trim might contribute to moisture accumulating around the leaking seal. The window trim is not really the cause of the window fogging. If an IGU is submerged under water, the inside of the IGU should remain moisture free. When a seal fails, air and moisture will get inside the window, condense and fog.

@@theobserver9131no. Those are drains to prevent water pooling inside the frame. If it does then the sealed unit can break down and moisture enter. This means the sealed unit is blown. If enough moisture can pass into the unit and overcome the desiccant in it then you'll get condensation moving around it.

I know this is really old, but isn't the glazing bead (that little piece of trim that goes over the top of the glass pane) supposed to have a rubber seal in it or be tight against the glass? Also, I could have sworn it had virtually nothing to do with the seal on the window and is largely there to simply keep the window pane itself from falling out of the frame because it's just glued in using silicone on the interior side of the glass. Heating up the window simply makes all the moisture evaporate off the glass surface, it's still in the window, just not condensed on the glass itself... and as soon as the window cools and the interior window temperature hits the dew point, it will fog up again as the moisture inside the pane condenses again. Basically, this seems like a lot of wasted time that doesn't actually do anything once a window is to the point it fogs. If the little rubber durometer seal on the glazing bead is bad, or missing, the silicone could prevent water from getting in en masse so that it doesn't sit in a pool of water and wick up from the bottom, but that will eventually happen anyway if those drains on the side are not working because the portion of glass behind the glazing bead will regularly condense on the outside whenever the window surface under them passes the dew point and the water vapor comes in through the drains in small amounts (over and over).
@ThingsHumansDo
@ThingsHumansDo Жыл бұрын
I am not a window expert, but from what I understand a double-pane (insulated) window has a permanent internal seal that keeps the inert inside air free of moisture. Once the seal fails, then the window will fog up if any moisture is present around the window long term (extreme differences in temperature can also cause moisture build up). In my case, the reason the window would never clear of internal fog was because moisture was being trapped inside of the bottom of the window frame. Literally after every rain I could see water just sitting in the bottom of the frame for days… Once I dried out the frame itself and as much of the window as possible, putting a bit of silicone outside completely fixed my problem with the fogging simply by stopping the water from sitting there too long. Completely drying out the inside is not possible, I am simply moving the moisture around, which allows it to spread out from the bottom and gives more surface area for it to eventually (hopefully) dry out on its own in between the window panes. It’s important to understand that the window in this video needs to be replaced. I am not “fixing” it in any way, I am simply minimizing the amount of moisture that collects around it. So far after a few years that window has never fogged up again and I still haven’t replaced it. At some point I will make a follow up video showing what it looks like today. Everything looks exactly the same, the silicone is still in place and the window is 100% fog free. Maybe I just got lucky? Who knows. Either way, what I did here worked for me better than I ever expected.

@@ThingsHumansDoI've worked in two factories where the sealed units and windows are fabricated. The sheets of glass are cut and an aluminium edging is added with a powder desiccant inside the edging, usually molecular sieve, and the gap between the two panes is filled with a dry inert gas. Then the outer edging is made with a sealant and then taped around the outside. The window is fitted with frame installed first and if it's not properly fixed, usually wedged, into place then movement can cause the sealed unit to shear and blow (or become unsealed) allowing moisture or damp air to enter. Another reason for failure is poor drainage of the frame which allows water to collect in the base and enter the unit causing it to blow. Another possible cause is the frame itself moving, which is why timber frames are not ideal for sealed unit double glazing.
@SteveSmith-zo4ml
@SteveSmith-zo4ml 2 ай бұрын
This is called sealed unit double glazing in the UK. You’ve got two problems there. First, the seal between the frame and glass is leaking. That can be the rubber seal, but in this case it seems that the frame is at fault. Never see that here. In any case, there should be drainage holes in the bottom of the frame beneath the glass unit so that water discharges on to the window cill rather than collecting in the frame. Second problem is the sealed two pane glass unit has become unsealed. Probably caused by the first problem - water sitting in the frame. Normally I would say just change the glass and also the rubber seal on the frame if needed. I do them all the time. It’s a DIY job and a 2x4 ft replacement unit is only about £100 delivered. Don’t muck around with hair dryers and other bodges like drilling a hole in the outer glass. Unfortunately, it looks like a poor quality frame if it’s flexible enough that you can press it in with your finger. The beading should be chamfered and rigid upvc. It shouldn’t flex like that. So really, you need a complete new window of better quality. What you’ve done might work for a while, but the unit will mist up again when the conditions are right. And the silicone seal you’ve put on won’t last. It degrades and becomes unstuck anywhere, but even faster on glass.

When you blow it with a hairdryer doesn't the moisture stay between the 2 panes? I thought it would just turn into vapor and maybe when the weather gets cold the moisture would stick on the glass again and become foggy? I'm only guessing tho cause I don't understand where the moisture would go when you heat it up.
@ThingsHumansDo
@ThingsHumansDo Жыл бұрын
I’m not a scientist, but I believe it just moves the moisture around and spreads it out. Instead of collecting at the bottom, the vapor moves further up in the window and for me, it eventually just disappeared after that. I assume that eventually with all the sunlight we get where I live it eventually dried out after it was spread. Never came back.

Residential glazier here. The first red flag is there's no "exterior seal". There is one seal surrounding the edge of both panes that connects them. Typically Plygem clients say it's been 15 - 20 years since they got the windows and they've failed. I obviously don't work for people with functional windows so I'm sure they've lasted longer. Also, "builder grade"? I'd love to see a chart of the window grades in your mind. The frames are designed to hold small amounts of water under the window until it builds up enough to drain through the weep holes. So an actual good tip for all of you is to ensure that a painter didn't caulk or paint over the weep holes (The two holes on the bottom of the window frame). Please do not do what he did. Please save up for a new window. You're making it ugly, and making my job slightly harder when I inevitably come to your house.

If you think clearing up a foggy window pane makes it ugly then I will happily disagree with you there hah. I’ve had three of these windows fail so far and my home was built less than 8 years ago, so whoever told you 15 to 20 years is typical must be smoking some really good stuff. FYI, To achieve a better and more pleasing appearance on the chocking, you could have taken the time to thoroughly clean the windows glass, then once done, carefully adhere a strip of tape roughly 4 - 5 cm above the frame of the window where you were placing the chocking. By applying this method, you would be able to use a finger or better yet use one of those pre-designed chocking spreaders to remove the majority of the chocking which would result in a thin uniform bead of chocking against both the window and its’ frame.

The most likely cause of the dgu misting is it's likely sitting in water at the bottom, if there is no drainage in the sash then the seal round the spacer bar will break down allowing moisture to enter the cavity, sealing the frame will make the problem worse, remove the Beeding and pack the glass up from the frame, make sure the drainage holes are clear before replacing Beeding.

That frame has two drainage ports at the bottom to prevent this occurrence. This suggests strongly, that it was not installed per manufactures instructions. Maybe installer laid a strip of duck tape along the bottom or applied too much foam gap filler (it does what it says on the side of the tin - expands to fill all gaps). Think it would be very much quicker to pop out the interior beads holding the sealed unit in. Use putty knife/wall paper scraper or some such. Force knife in between bead and frame, not bead and glass. Inspect and cure problem. Looks like new house. Take photos and blast builder for shoddy work and do they wish to make a statement (right of reply) for you to included in your next video. Are the neighbours suffering the same problem?

Instead of a leaf blower I recommend a vacuum cleaner…wand type to suck the moisture out, then maybe a little bit of hair dryer.

Great Vid,but what about if the water ingress has etched the glass. Which apparently happens. There are vids that show how to remove the glass and separate them. But! The water and salts have etched the glass.

Smearing caulk is perfectly fine as long as you do it without letting it build up on your finger. Actually depresses it.

I would still smear it in with a finger, do a second line if you really want after pushing it a bit deeper in by finger, anything on the window can easily bw scraped off

Gotta do all 4 sides and works best if you put blue tape on first so you can use your wet finger to massage the caulking. Then remove the blue tape right after...

@ThingsHumansDo

Thanks. I’m not sure about that one, it could still be worth putting silicone in the bottom of the frame if you find that there is water collecting there like mine did. Anything you can do to prevent water from getting stuck inside or around the window frame might help.

unless you removed air from in between the panes and replaced it with dry air the moisture is still there! All you did was change the state of the moisture to a full vapor!

I agree with you and with him because glazed glass should be OK under a water, so since is foggy - moisture is there so " is finished ". Is hard to understand why his method works but even if the window is "failed " by heating the window the air expanding and that pressure to get the air out but when is cooling air going in again, so best to do as on the video. If worm air coming in - is definitely less condensed with moisture. So seal from outside is good idea. I like this video because that's simple and works. I like simple things which helps safe us from spending money on new glass. Because a lot of people brake the glass by heating too close to the glass - pin a message to keep dryer not closer then 30 cm and don't keep in same spot to avoid cracking. Good video 👍

What would you do to get rid of mold and debris in a double paned window? I moved into an apartment that seems to have had holes put into the double paned window to prevent condensation but there is debris trapped between the panes and I believe mold. Then, I did something not too bright and sprayed a little hydrogen peroxide in that hole and now I think I upset the debris in there, didn't dry it out, was unsure what to do at the time.

You’re not really getting rid of the moisture entirely, you’re spreading it out so it’s less visible and concentrated on the bottom. In my case, the moisture spread out and then it just went away eventually. Even to this day, the same window you see in this video is still crystal clear with no visible moisture in it. I still have not replaced it because I have no reason to.

There needs to be a gap between the frame and glass a minimum of 6mm to allow water to drain out the drainage slots the unit fails when the silica beads inside the unit spacerbar cant absorb any more moisture When this happens the vacume older units or argon on newer units escapes and you lose all performance from the unit u will notice this room is colder than your other a new unit is the only way to fix this

If this is supposed to reduce the water between the two pieces of glass then I doubt it would have much effect. The vents in the plastic frame are supposed to drain any water between the plastic and the glass, so just clean them out. The fog between the panes is caused by diurnal temperature changes and you'll need to dry that out and dry out the crystals in the alloy frame between the panes. There are plenty of videos on how to do that. This method is inadequate and is unlikely to remove the mist

The moisture doesn't come through the glass, the seal has broken down probably on the lower edge as it's been sitting in wet for years.... Sealing the bottom will not remove damp trapped between the panes and heating won't either. My misted windows clear in certain weather conditions....
@ThingsHumansDo

As I mentioned in the video, my goal here was not to seal the glass because that’s impossible. It is simply to dry the window, then fill in the gap at the bottom and stop rainwater from accumulating again. The long term accumulation of that water at the bottom of the window frame was the source of the moisture in the window.
@davexvs

that window has two vents at the bottom which drains out any water so i call BS to the water pooling there deffo would not use a hair dryer to heat the glass but hey you got your views so all's good
