Your story about the rise/fall in level of the water in Kingston reminds me of my experience of years ago. I was in a small 12 foot long skiff, with little free board, nearing the Port Jefferson harbor entrance. I was off to the side of the channel when a tugboat was passing about 50 yards away. It drove home how much water he was pushing when the wave hit me. I turned my bow into his wave and had quite a ride. No wake from him, just pushing a lot of water.

I once got out of my comfort zone in the Houston ship channel in foggy weather. While talking to a passing tug boat and told him I was very nervous and regret leaving when I did and was trying to find a place out of everyone’s way to stop and wait for better visibility. I received an offered dock space, help getting there and a great meal before getting back underway. The lesson here is not to be afraid to communicate and ask for help if you need it. Yes there is always a few out there who will give you a good cursing, but they still help.

No worry, your setup is perfect. We get to observe real time what is occurring in relation to the rudder and engine/throttle inputs. As a a retired U.S. Naval officer who came in as a seaman recruit and earned a commission, I will never forget the people and the 'sea daddy' Boatswains Mate who helped me out along the way through my 25 year career. I was a just a kid floundering around out of high school, but someone recognized something in me that was worth working with and developing. I still stay in contact with many of them. I like to think I paid it forward as I became a department head and OIC and recognized and developed talent along the way. You should be justifiably proud Skipper, that's what it's all about!

Tim, your points on using Ch 13 are spot on. Here in the PNW we have a combined (US & CDN) VTS from the bottom of the Puget Sound up into Northern British Columbia. The waterways lay out basically north-south traffic lanes busy with heavy ocean going shipping, military vessels and tugs plying the lanes, while both commercial and non-commercial traffic moves west-east to cross those lanes. Add in some fog and crossing can be very adventurous. While many local boaters are not required to check in with VTS, they do maintain a listening watch to understand the traffic movement. AIS and radar are helpful, but Ch 13-wheelhouse to wheelhouse is your friend. Love your show!

Tim, The captains commentary amungst the radio chatter what a way to see New York....albeit foggy. We don't see much fog (lol) down here except for that one time on Australia Day.....the second biggest event on Sydney Harbour. Spectator Cruse ships galor! One out bound, 2 inbound, 2 at anchor (rare) pilots and tugs. Then a fog appears and the ships (etal.) commence soud signals for conduct in restricted vis at 06:00 Sunday of the long weekend. It was an audio apocalypse of fog horns bells and gongs. I heard it from my flat..... in Balmain! People actualy called the water police! Reporting "A Fog horn road rage argument by cruse ships" Made me glad i was in bed that morning!

It's interesting you talked about the catarman. Just yesterday I read a post on Facebook from a boater doing the Great Loop. He talked about the importance of having more than one vhf radio to monitor channel 13 and channel 16 to communicate with commercial traffic and the Coast Guard. Another "captain" chimed in and said the commercial ships were wrong for not hailing on channel 16. The Looper then posted the laws and explained how the commercial ships communicate with vts. I thought of the video you posted about your radios. Some of us pleasure boaters need more schooling... #CUOTO

Thank you for watching Mike! Yes, it can get a little confusing to say the least. I have had yachtsmen owning boats that cost close to a million dollars say to me, "Two radios? That seems expensive." And for the recreational boater, it may be hard to understand why we use 13 because they don't have to hear all the traffic on 16 every day and night of there working career. We all have a good ear on and the volume up on 13 just to hear what is happening close to us. Be safe and thank you Mike. CUOTO

We recreationally boat in the area of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, near Portland Oregon. There IS commercial traffic everywhere. The smart boaters always monitor the commercial shipping radio and talk to them now and then to ask intentions and stay out of their way. Next season we hope to back in the water with a new outdrive, AND full bi-directional AIS added to our Simrad system.

Yes, Tim, english is the language of all flight, not just airlines. BUTTT the accents encountered once in a while make that a joke. One thing I noticed over the years is that sea comm is much more undisciplined than air comm. For instance, in USAF we used IPTAID for a position report (where two airways intersect): ID, Pos'n, True air speed, Altitude. Intermediate reporting point and Destination. Tho I never drove a commercial bus, and the military avoids airways as much as possible, I can see how this radio discipline spread from military thru ATC to airlines. And I also appreciate why sea comm is much more uncodified: The diverse ways a seaman becomes a cap't. // God, I love your integrated radar/chart display. We had an integrated radar/GPS 18" scope on Argentina Star in 1996, which I thought, as a navigator, to be the absolute ultimate info. Oh, well. Cheers and safe driving, JL

It looks to me, like it would've been much simpler and easier go past the dock and turn 180 in the open water so you're driving straight into the dock. Are you able to make the turn tight like that just due to steering from the rear, or is it more down to your experience and superior skill? Also, is Chris at the bow of the BARGE, or your tug? If he's at the bow of the barge, how does that work? Getting across seems physically tricky, and moving around safely in an unfamiliar area while you're focused on the dock and how the boat/barge is moving. I assume you radio the tankerman when the lookout heads up to his spot (or does he stay up there throughout the trip)? Again, thanks for sharing these videos and letting us into your workspace.
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching Dion. Couple of things here. Yes, you could go past the dock and round up, but by doing that you would not be able to control your lateral movement towards the dock because of the fair tide. So countering the tide and rolling around the dock seemed like a better option at the time. The deckhands go to the bow of the barge. They have to be agile. With a lite barge, they use a ladder and with many loaded ones they simply get off in the notch. CUOTO

Hi Tim, A misty day in New York Town, I feel a song coming on. It's always good to meet up with old friends, if only for a word or two. On the River Thames down near Dartford the garbage is taken out of barges and put into landfill, they prevent wind blow a building has bean erected for the barges to go inside. I fitted a dual channel radio so I could monitor Ch16 and the area working channel at the same time. I was in company with and larger vessel sailing down and out of the Thames to Ramsgate on the south coast. So Ch16 and Thames Estuary Ch noted in the Royal Yachting Association almanack. After mooring in Ramsgate we were approached by a Pilot who was going to report us for impeding the ship under his control and not responding to the Thames radio Channel. We explained we had been and showed him the RYA book, which differed from his chart. I did ask why he didn't call us on Ch16, he turned on his heals and left. On the return trip the dual was set to Ch16, & RYA Thames Ch. The hand held to the Chart Ch.

Good morning Gordon. Thank you for watching. Only the propelled tugboats and ships have AIS. The barges not being propelled don't have AIS and thus don't show up on the plotter. The red dotted line (predictor line or vector line) is the tugs motion, and we have set it to 6 minutes. CUOTO

Hi Tim, it was a very controlled roll around the casement to come in to the dock, but I wondered why you wouldn't make your turn, further out in the river and then set your self to come straight in? I was also interested in your comment about the surge, from a passing ship, lifting the water up. In our local river, there is a channel in the centre but quite shallow and flat on either side. When a ship passes near low tide, it lifts the water out on to the shallows, but afterwards, drags the water back again. Moored craft in the shallows get hauled 90 deg whilst on their mooring. It is quite dramatic.

Yes; generally an airline pilot can fly around the world using only English. Controllers will talk to you in English, although they may also communicate with their compatriots in the local language, on the same frequency. I wrote "generally" at the outset because, in certain places, like Eastern Russia, the knowledge of English is limited. Also, native English speakers should not use the slang we often use in our own countries. That can cause dangerous confusion overseas. BTW: You mentioned the pilot who would do the S-turn to slow down. We do that with planes, in a side-slip or a forward slip. They give you tremendous control over your approach angle to a runway.

Captain...another great video. I have a question and forgive me if you have covered this before and I've forgotten. I hope this makes sense. Why not position yourself in the river for a straight shot into the final stop for the barge? Instead of using the "cell to roll around". Is that decision because of other traffic, the tide? Thank you.
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. In that particular case, that would have required me to go past the dock, turn 180 and then drive back to the dock. That wouldn't be so bad, but when I would have turned left into the slip (opposite of turning right the way I went) I could have driven into the slip but I would have had the added lateral movement with no way to stop it. By countering the currant and laying up on the cell at the end I could roll around in a controlled manner. I hope that makes sense and let me know if it doesn't and I try to explain it better. CUOTO

As with today’s monitoring, it’s not uncommon for me to fall asleep while having a KZbin video on. It will continue to play videos as they are randomly or more likely, personally assigned to my viewing, along with the ads. You can imagine what may be going through my mostly asleep brain when I hear some communication playing. Just last night, I believe I was stuck on some very high structure. I’m normally not afraid of heights. So, I should have been able to get myself down, especially since I used to climb trees as a kid. Next thing I know, I hear some radio traffic. In my dream, a rescue copter team member is loading me into a basket. Not one of those stretcher things, but a basket where i can sit down and enjoy the view and ride. I could see the ground closing in. But though we weren’t that close to the ground, the basket ride got really still. I looked down and it wasn’t moving. WTF?!? We’re no longer dropping? I crack my eyes open to confirm we weren’t moving. No we weren’t. And I couldn’t hear the chopper running. It was at that time where I thought my ride was over, I’m gonna get a huge bill for the rescue, and oh, that’s the ceiling I’m looking up at. It was all a dream. But, that flight from the Florida keys was still going, along with the radio traffic. That’s not the first time something like that has happened. ✌️🤙

Again like the family car.. Now a tech question for you. Are your screws counter rotating? If not how do you counter the P factor, I might think you have a trim element for the rudder's. In flying we use a bunch of right rudder on takeoffs to counter the torque of the engine/propeller. As always I enjoy your in depth narrative.

Yes. Air traffic Control including ground control must speak English. I was watching a flight from the Florida keys to the Bahamas, Cuba and (oh heck. Was it the caymans? I think so) the Carmen Islands. And when they were over Cuban airspace, there was English AND Spanish. I don’t know if that’s technically allowed. I would think as a pilot, I would want to know if another plane was instructed to fly at or near my position, or any other details which could affect my safety or even comfort. I find it interesting that the flight industry use starboard and port as well as maritime.
