Which is the best hot dog ever? That is what we will find out today with this taste test and between all the mayor hot dogs and wieners brands in the market. Nothing screams backyard summer grilling like a good old fashioned hot dog. Well, we decided to put some of the top names in hot dogs to the ultimate taste test and decide which was our favorite. Ron grilled up 7 of the top names in hot dogs on the Big Green Egg. They each had surprisingly different flavors but only one could reign supreme as the King of the Dogs! Which one came out on top? You’ll just have to watch the video and find out for yourself!

I still eat hot dogs cut up and fried with eggs, got it from my Dad also. Tear up pieces of bread and toast in a skillet, fry hot dogs pieces in same skillet with the bread, butter, pour in beaten eggs and make just like you would soft scrambled eggs, add a little cheese if you like and throw it under a broiler for a couple minutes. It's basically a hot dog frittata. A simple version is to just add eggs to the fried hot dog pieces in a small skillet and flip for over med eggs, makes a good sandwich on toast.

When I first started working in New York City in the early 70’s - I lived in Lyndhurst NJ and took the Erie Lackawanna to Hoboken to catch PATH to the Financial District. On the way home at night we arrived at Hoboken on PATH and walked up the stairs to the trains. Just as we got to the top of the stairs and turned right to catch the trains we would line up at the carry out window of the bar for a hot dog and a can of beer. The dogs were fried Schickhaus franks and in addition to normal condiments they had the tastiest hot pepper relish. Fantastic! The beer was Rheingold! What a memory!!

Yes, hot dogs are definitely cooked. I know because I operated the smokehouse for Cudahy Foods in Atlanta, GA back in the '70's. The cooking process for our average-sized hot dogs was for an hour and fifty minutes. The first 20 minutes of the process, the dogs were cooked at 120 degrees. Then, they were automized with liquid smoke at room temperature for 20 minutes. After the dogs were darkened and flavored with the smoke, they cooked for 20 minutes at 140 degrees. The next 20 minutes, they were cooked at 160 degrees. And the next 20 minutes, they cooked at 180 degrees. At that point, they were checked with thermometers by Moi and a government inspector to see if they had reached 160 degrees on the inside of the hot dog. If so, they were rinsed for 10 minutes, weighed, combined on three tree racks, and stored in the blast freezer. Hot dogs bin vedy vedy good to me. 🙂

Hot dogs are always precooked, you eat them right out of the package, been doing it ever since I was a kid and I'm 65. This man just went way down on the credibility list. Moms have been handing children and toddlers weenies straight out of the package to shut them up since the beginning of hot dog time. I can't believe you said that they are not pretty cooked.

The info I was given was incorrect. It should have been that although MOST are precooked, the FDA recommends fully cooking them again before consuming them.

They are precooked. BIL worked in a 'factory' that made various sausages and hotdogs. Hot dogs start out blue and they know the hotdogs are cooked when they turn red. Kind of like the tape on surgical kits that has the black strips when the kits reach the right temp when sterilized.

I was rooting for the Sabrettes from the get go. I love a sabrettt hot dog in Natural casing - not skinless. boiled in water just like the dirty water hot dog carts in New York. The pop when you bite into them. They have such a beautiful flavor to them. Occasionally my wife buys whatever is on sale but they are either sabrette , Nathan’s , boars head or Hebrew national -that’s it.

Watching this, I want to be invited over for lunch immediately. “Dogs” are so good grilled! Best on a stick over an open camp fire in my opinion. Some of the best dogs I’ve had were the wrinkled kind. Not sure why. I brown mine briefly in a pan then toss into boiling water. I get that char skin but the boiling helps to reduce too much richness especially if going condiment free. Fun vid! Some brands I haven’t heard of too. Happy summer hot dogging everyone! ☀️

When it comes to processed meats like hot dogs, "best" becomes very arbitrary and subjective, depending on your criteria and your own personal taste. I've had cheap hot dogs made from chicken and pork for so long that when I get an "all-beef" hot dog, it doesn't taste right to me. Hot dogs also depend on the condiments and toppings you put on them. A chili cheese dog is going to taste different from a Chicago dog, no matter which hot dog brand you use. As I've gotten older, I've found that I prefer a sausage over a hot dog, with mayo, sweet relish and tomato.

I am so enthralled by hot dogs and have been so for the last 30 years. I was a Nypd cop who would always have a foot post on st marks place in the village in nyc as punishment for one thing or another. I didn’t mind wandering around my post in the village. Lots of weirdos and something always going on to make the night interesting. There was a business called “Greys papaya” they would sell 2 dogs grilled and a whipped papaya drink(other flavors too) for 2.50 at the time. They were open 24 hours and always had a line out the door. I studied this business for years and on many occasions would see them get their deliveries of sabrett’s hot dogs by the case load from a refrigerated struck. Hand truck load after load would go into the store and into a walk-in box downstairs. My entrepreneurial self was always thinking of setting a business up following their model but naturally under a different name somewhere else - in the right place. I was always discouraged by my wife and kids that are health conscious. They would say that hot dogs are a food of the past and people don’t want that anymore. BUT THEY ARE WRONG !!! I am pushing 60 and still thinking about this business with Sabrett’s hot dogs. I will do this before I die. Your video just reinforced and added validity to my ambitious dream. Unfortunately the prices have skyrocket on the hot dogs and virtually everything else , so that is a bummer. Thanks again for the video.

Out of the ones on your list, I think I like Sabrett the best, then Hebrew National and then Nathan’s, but there’s also a couple on here I’ve never tried.

That snap is because they have a natural casing. Nathan’s also makes hot dogs like that although these he has in this video are not. I prefer the natural casing also.

The Sabrett in the casing is the classic "Dirty Water Dog" of NYC. Has a good snap and firm texture even after sitting in the steamer awhile, and I think they use more garlic in the seasoning that gives them that distinctive taste.

I was a meat department manager back before Kroger screwed up the industry and I got to tell you. The Sabrett’s are the highest quality dog in the market. Can’t beat them. Hebrew National is a close second if you like a little more spice. Just my opinion.

The last time I bought Hebrew National I thought I had dropped one and lost it between the kitchen and the BBQ. Nope they downsized the package from 7 to 6.I haven't bought them since. It's called 'SHRINKFLATION'.

I have no idea why this came up on my KZbin list but I can tell you, growing up in Buffalo means I grew up on Sahlens. A client of mine was a foreman at Sahlens and told me that the owner is VERY particular about the meat that goes into the hot dogs. He told me that he has personally seen the owner come down and throw meat off the line that wasn’t to his standards. So….Sahlens I can tell you is NOT “lips and a-holes”. Lol.

I live in So Cal & while I'm not familiar with a couple of those brands my go-to 'grocery store' dogs are the Jumbo Nathans either with mustard & grilled onions or as a chili dog. Sometimes I buy the Dietz & Watson white ones...they may be called Brätwurst. I grill them then put them on a good deli roll, add German mustard and grilled onions....just the way I enjoyed them from carts on the streets of Salzburg. Anything from a German butcher is going to be pretty tasty. Wish there was one near me. 🌭
