Which is the best hot dog ever? That is what we will find out today with this taste test and between all the mayor hot dogs and wieners brands in the market. Nothing screams backyard summer grilling like a good old fashioned hot dog. Well, we decided to put some of the top names in hot dogs to the ultimate taste test and decide which was our favorite. Ron grilled up 7 of the top names in hot dogs on the Big Green Egg. They each had surprisingly different flavors but only one could reign supreme as the King of the Dogs! Which one came out on top? You’ll just have to watch the video and find out for yourself!

Would be a kicker to include those Costco All Beef Dogs in there. They have a deep beefy flavor that is hard to match although the Nathans WITH all natural casings are darn good too. Our go to dog are the Hebrew National mainly because they are always on our local stores shelves. Yes, hot dogs are definitely cooked. I know because I operated the smokehouse for Cudahy Foods in Atlanta, GA back in the '70's. The cooking process for our average-sized hot dogs was for an hour and fifty minutes. The first 20 minutes of the process, the dogs were cooked at 120 degrees. Then, they were automized with liquid smoke at room temperature for 20 minutes. After the dogs were darkened and flavored with the smoke, they cooked for 20 minutes at 140 degrees. The next 20 minutes, they were cooked at 160 degrees. And the next 20 minutes, they cooked at 180 degrees. At that point, they were checked with thermometers by Moi and a government inspector to see if they had reached 160 degrees on the inside of the hot dog. If so, they were rinsed for 10 minutes, weighed, combined on three tree racks, and stored in the blast freezer. Hot dogs bin vedy vedy good to me. 🙂

I still eat hot dogs cut up and fried with eggs, got it from my Dad also. Tear up pieces of bread and toast in a skillet, fry hot dogs pieces in same skillet with the bread, butter, pour in beaten eggs and make just like you would soft scrambled eggs, add a little cheese if you like and throw it under a broiler for a couple minutes. It's basically a hot dog frittata. A simple version is to just add eggs to the fried hot dog pieces in a small skillet and flip for over med eggs, makes a good sandwich on toast.

When it comes to processed meats like hot dogs, "best" becomes very arbitrary and subjective, depending on your criteria and your own personal taste. I've had cheap hot dogs made from chicken and pork for so long that when I get an "all-beef" hot dog, it doesn't taste right to me. Hot dogs also depend on the condiments and toppings you put on them. A chili cheese dog is going to taste different from a Chicago dog, no matter which hot dog brand you use. As I've gotten older, I've found that I prefer a sausage over a hot dog, with mayo, sweet relish and tomato.

Nice review video. For me, on this list Boar's Head hotdogs are the best for their flavor and texture. Boar's Head lamb casing hotdogs are even better and are the best hotdogs I've ever had. Even though you didn't review it, Feltman's hotdogs are really good flavor and texture wise because their hotdogs are in a lamb casing and I feel their regular size hotdogs are better than their jumbo ones. Hebrew National hotdogs are pretty good, nothing too special. Same for Nathan's hotdogs. They're good, but I feel they're over spiced. Another hotdog that wasn't in this review that I feel ppl overly hype up is the Costco hotdogs. The jumbo ones at least are ok but I don't care to much for their texture. Oscar Mayer and Ball Park are at the bottom for me. Both hotdogs aren't that good tasting and their textures are off putting, especially the texture of Ball Park. It's been years since I've had a Sabrett hotdog, can't remember if they're good or just ok to me and I've never had Sahlen's. Well, that was my two cents and some. Lol

Captain, I hope this was a tasty test ….. I never had a Sabretts, (or seen them at a local grocery store) but I’ll keep my eyes open. For what it’s worth, I’m always pleasantly surprised at the yumminess of Costco’s beef hot dog ….. in any event, I hope it was a tasty treat!!

Sadly, here in the west, I have never seen Sahlen's, Sabrette's or Boar's head at any supermarket. I like Hebrew national, but find them too salty. In fact, I find pretty much all hot dogs too salty. Nathan's, Oscar Meyer both seem okay to me (I expected more from Nathan's when I first saw them) and Ball park seem like generic hot dogs, not too exciting. We have "Dodger dogs" which are longer, but still pretty meh. To reduce the salt, I often boil them, but if I'm in the mood to grill them, I may soak them a couple hours first, to leach out some of the salt. I know hot dogs should have lots of flavor and should be simple, so this annoys me a bit. My favorite would probably be the ones with the least salt.
@SoCalKevin

I gotta agree that Hebrew national hot dogs are too salty! It’s not bad if you’re just eating one, but i usually eat 3-4 of the normal size ones as a meal every once in a long while.

What was missing from your taste test were Vienna brand all beef hot dogs and Hoffy brand beef hot dogs. I had a hot dog at a friends house a month ago, it was an Oscar Mayer Angus beef hot dog, it was surprisingly good. Nathan's skinless and natural casing hot dogs taste different from each other. Sabrett, Vienna, Hoffy's, Nathan's and Boar's head all offer a natural casing hot dog version of their product.

Yeah I have a feeling the one in this video that he said tasted like bologna was the Oscar Meyer. He said they were all beef but Oscar Meyer wieners are made with pork, chicken and beef. The supposed all beef is labeled beef franks. The Angus beef are fairly good. The reality is most hot dogs are made from all sorts of cuts. From head, feet, liver, fatty tissue, snout, lips, eyes, brain and so on.

Hoffy brand dogs are fillers and flavor. OM is ok but for my money, sorta bland. Just an opinion. By the way anymore. It’s a mad cow thing. They had to stop that in 1996-97. All brains are used as scape meats for make ups and soaps.

Barely 2 minutes in and you've already lost me. Most hot dogs are 100% pre-cooked, and it says it right on the package. Very few hot dogs are not pre-cooked because it is a necessary step to get that homogeneous texture. If you didn't pre-cook them, then the fats and meats would separate even with emulsifiers and you'd end up with something closer to a sausage than a hot dog.

Really good and colorful segment. I would like for you to do one on natural casing hot dogs. IMHO they kick ass versus regular hot dogs.
