Phil a comment, regarding skills and setup. This is from playing solo HC (on a starter char) my go to is start holy fire, then at act 2 NM respec to hammers. keep this to complete the game (kill hell baal). this setup allows for ultra smooth fast leveling from act 1, and fast baal farm and especially cows to get spirit bases for weapon and shield. at act 2 NM the dps and amount of immunes goes up so at this point you just wanna progress fast, and then xp farm at NM baal. the hammerdin is safest (and minion necro) to progress fast thrue rest of game. at completing game you respec to FOH, and then can farm certain areas fast, CS and PIT are ultra good. but other areas are great and you run Terror zones where there is areas you like. Arcane santuary, flayer jungle etc. for auras i use salvation to get massive res. meaning you can forgo res on gear and get mf (litterly max it). My go to item if i find it is guardian angle. with putting points into holy shield and res ligthning your litterly immune to any type of element. for the HC experince high max res, cap block, and stack magic and life charms you will be rocking with basic gear 7k armor, 1600+ hp 90-90-95 res on a ultra basic starter char. at around 92 you can respec or make another char but you completed getting self found from scratch a lot of good gear, some runes and a paladin to correct lvl for respeccing for smiter for thoes ubers (HC you dont want hybrid build)

I went with a blend of FOH and Hammers. I maxed Holy Bolt and FOH and then maxed Hammers and Vigor. The rest I got Holy Shield and the rest of Concentration so I get boost for Hammer but also my merc would hit harder as well. I am able to solo everything quickly. Coming into a pack I throw a FOH down, and then I tele in and drop hammers and FOH as soon as I can. Holy bolt for bosses and it cuts through everything.

I'm sitting here farming the Pit with my FoH pally. Leveling - this goes to the Holy Bolt pally, you can get easily through A1 Cat-Andy with holy bolt. A2 has some animal monsters but your new prayer merc will take them out. A3 is almost entirely demons as well as A4. By the time you get to A5 you have already sunk some pts into FoH. Survivability - FoH. You don't have any one aura you need to run for a FoH pally. You can run Sanctuary just fine once you hit Hell and have negative resists. You don't need to run Conviction to get the power out of your attacks. I'd give Hammers the power build as it scales better at P8 but FoH is the survivability build. I also just like it more that Hammers.

As soon as they fixed / updated FoH (making projectiles pierce as well as hit demons) I rolled a FoH / smite hybrid. One of the most fun builds I played since 2000. Progressed through the entire game on hardcore with no respecs, maxed out FoH, holy bolt, holy shield, fanaticism and the rest is going into smite itself. For any non-demons that you encounter and want to kill you switch into fast crushing blow weapon (such as Black RW) with max fanaticism that the merc also enjoys. For ubers all you need to do is swap out a couple of items and you're ready to roll. A good early setup is spirit/spirit for foh, using level 1 redemption aura and switching into black / spirit with smite and max fanaticism when needed. For ubers you change items like shako, viper, trangs gloves and war travs into g-face, treachery, draculs and goblins / gore riders.

@@goshu7009 It's quite a bit, but you could get away with just putting 1 hard point into it. 95% of the job is being done by crushing blow, after which flat damage helps a lot to get the kill fast. Otherwise it can be a long struggle. If you slap a grief phase blade in your main hand, 1 hard skill in smite is plenty, however starting out those points help out. I'd still go with fanaticism first as it benefits both the damage and attack speed as well as your mercenary.

No need. Your main damage is not lightning and there are no immunes to holy bolt among undead and demons

I tried Fohdin for the first time this last ladder season. I respec'd to a hammerdin for farming bosses, but then I regretted it pretty quickly. The Fohdin is a lot more fun to play on imo even though hammerdin is best for killing mobs overall.

This is my favorite build. Despite it being mostly limited to farming areas that are mostly or entirely demon/undead, which is most areas, I do think you can have flexibility with the extra skill points for auras. If you're wise enough to put a skill point into meditation, you can dump that crappy Insight merc for extremely effective offensive merc builds.

Single player offline HC player here. Already have a char which can do everything at P3 - summoner necro but he is not very fast at some areas at higher player count. Chose FoH for cs, pits, travincal, arcane sanctuary, countes etc. at P7/P8. EQ - shako, hoto, enigma, trang gloves, mara, arahnid mesh, spirit in 45 sacred rondage (optimal would be in sacred targe but not huge difference), 1 ring with 10 fcr + fire resist and other resist/mana/life if possible, 1 ring depending on situation (travincal and cs - dwarf star), boots of your choise (war traveler is mine). Skills: 20 into holy bolt, fist of heavens, holy shield, defiance and the resit into redemption. Stats around 3.2 - 3.5 k hp after B.O. ; 125 faster cast rate, 20 k defense (around 30k with defiance, 75 % block chance, all resistance overcap by around 70-80 and are maxed even after enemy conviction or lower curse). Mercenary EQ: kira, the reaper's toll, guardian angel with 1 or 2 ral rune for max fire even after enemy conviction. Fast killing speed, not as fast but a lot safer then a hammerdin. Travincal is around 60 runs per hour at p7.

For Ladder resets in D2R: #1 Make Blizzard Sorceress and find cold sunder to mf almost anywhere on Players 1 #2 Make Javazon for cows #3 Use the two characters above to fund a Mosaic Assassin, then use Mosaic when you have all the gear. Once you have the Blizz and Javazon, it probably will not take long to find stuff to trade for the runes required to make Enigma and Mosaics

So, FoH-er has issues with the ancients, Hammerdin has issues with second wave of Baal minions. Other than that, just go and skip those beasts and cows. Also those narrow bug tunnels (where you get a horadric staff) are an issue for both of them, since there are no demons/undead there and hammers don't work well in such a closed space.

fun fact for pvpers = FOH / charge/smite pally is god tier in pvp, will win 99% of all players in game every time. a few select sets can possibly counter it but getting the 1% of poeple with the correct gear to counter smite / FOH resits on a single toon is pretty much you will never see.

hey for a fun video suggestion try 1 time, do a PVP MERC video, find some players ask em to break out their best mercs, then pvp them. rules no charcater buffs only pure MERC duals see what mercs win. the players just move to help position their mercs so they engage the other merc vs not hitting players. only tricky part is finding honest players to do this, many try to cheat but sticking on massive lower resits charms and facet jewels on them while moving their merc in for the kill. which buffs the mercs unseen, which would be cheating as duel is for Merc vs Merc only, No player assistance or buffs allowed of any kind.

I have to add a point to FoH. Because you don’t have to keep up Concentration for extra damage, you can use any utility aura you want. I usually rotate Redemption (you will literally never die) and Conviction (for the rare occasion you have to kill something with the thunderbolt). Being able to keep up redemption means you’ll also never run out of mana. No need for Insight or Infinity Merc, so you can go to town with a melee homie that handles all the stuff FoH doesn’t touch.

I respectfully disagree, although Hdin takes more knowledge and practice as far as placement of character for hammers to hit. So to new D2R players I can see it being better. But I am biased as an old skool LLD player, cant have enigma at lvl 30 😅

I carried myself all the way through because you have to out a point into zeal and other things anyway. The spells are waaaay strong enough to kill everything without sacrificing gear for skills. Make a melee build with that for the main damage.

Been using the FOH Paladin for quite a while. Nothing melts through the chaos sanctuary better than FOH Paladin! Everything there is demon or undead and the FOH and Holy Bolt deal tons of damage to each class. Monsters are the only ones that get away from FOH and Holy Bolt. For groups of enemies, FOH melts right through them. For single enemies, better to switch to holy bolt and bring them down. Diablo is super easy with Holy Bolt. Also, position yourself so your merc is between you and the enemy you're going after and you'll heal your merc while dealing damage to the enemy since holy bolt heals allies and deals damage to enemies while penetrating through both allies and enemies.

FoH pal is a goat in his locations. But when we talking about actual playthrough there are some moments when he kinda sucks. Ancients for example. Had a lot of struggle with them on my single player. But it's definitely my favorite farming build

thats where the smiter hybrid shines. Smite clears bosses way faster, and handles ancients etc. My Foh-smiter can do baal runs way way easier than hammerdins, even chaos. - FOH-Smiter is by far better then pure hammers or pure FOH

@@num2007 you gotta max out holy bolt and FOH first when levelling. Holy bolt will take you through normal and nightmare pretty easily, as the damage against bosses (who are all demons) is actually decent. Just skip mobs that you cant holy bolt. then in nightmare you'll want to make black in a 3os flail, or strength in a 2os flail for CB. But by lvl 50 you should have maxed HB and FOH, the smite build becomes more useful in hell

I'm playing a FOH paladin right now, workout respec. I did go the holy bolt route and the hardest part is actually act 5 normal, when you're level 24-29. Most monsters aren't undead or demons up until worldstone keep actually. The best idea is to have some sword and try to hit them until you can use spirit. Then with double spirits you can put 1 point into blessed hammers and go through act 5 until you're level 30

Best idea is to stay hammerdin until you beat the game on hell difficulty. Just getting through Ancients and the Worldstone keep is 1000% easier with hammers. The question is then why ever go FOH? Only just to be different, I guess.

Played SSF FoHdin last season, no respecs, all budget gear (dual spirit, random rares etc). Used Holy Bolt and Zephyr+Stealth (50% frw before you add the bonus from boots/Vigor) through Normal. Holy Bolt, FoH, 5-10 in Prayer, Conviction, 1 point in Meditation. Zero need for blocking, can even use elemental bows like Kuko (with Holy Fire for kicks - lol) or Buriza to support the merc. A5 Frenzy Barb with elemental weapons (eg Crescent Moon sword). The only awkward areas are Maggot Lair, Viper Temple, Harrogath, the caves in A5, Cows, and the Ancients. Except for Ancients a teleport staff/amulet makes a big difference (pre-Enigma); the rest of the time you just stand behind your Merc and heal with Holy Bolt. All the major bosses and farming areas (Countess, Council, Chaos, Pits, Pindle [but not Cows obviously]) are wall to wall undead/demon. The same build plays well in groups because you have Conviction, when every other class usually wants/needs Infinity...

Just stay on Holy Fire - MAXED OUT till end of Nightmare, you can actually kill Nightmare Cows on p1 with Maxed Holy Fire :p You get good items from there. ANd for Hell - you switch to FoH and you join a party playing through hell.

2 ladders ago I started with FOH and I didn't realize the limitations of farming areas. I ended up switching to hammers because of this. FOH is supreme when you farm those other areas with demons/undead though.

I don't understand why you never test p8... what if you're trying to carry lowbies through a grush or chaos runs or baal runs? Those runs are always full. FoH and Auradins fall way behind the Hdin there. Skill Tree: 4:40 All you need is 1 point into Smite and maybe 1 to Fanat and your Hdin is now an uber/dclone killer... So I wouldn't give the 'nod' to FoH there... Attack Power: You don't HAVE to telestomp everything... you can tele under them, throw a few hammers, drop a few of them, THEN telestomp. Safety/Survivability: Hammers do so much dmg they stagger mobs and put them into Hit Recovery..... recovering = they do NO dmg Variety: There are more non-demon/undead than there are magic immunes Sorry but Hdin wins in everything but 'Fun' in my opinion... I hate the Hdin playstyle... I refuse to play one. But you can't deny he's probably the strongest build in the game.

To be fair Phi your kinda right and kinda wrong. The Holy Fire + FOH clears whole game and each skill fixes any weakness. If you count it out they are basically same amount of points compared to hammerdin. We’re not even taking about dragon variant

It's not. Hammers can clear the game. FOH is just demons and undead. Even with the buffs it hits like a wet noodle in a many areas. Even the Holy bolt feels weak considering its use case. Why they didn't just make it do magic damage to all like hammers is a lame decision on the devs part.

Wave 2 of Baal isn’t an issue for a hammerdin…get a strong act 2 might merc and put 1 hard point in fanaticism. U keep spinning ur hammers so the skeletons keep dying while our boy Emilio wrecks the immunes like a mac truck at a demolition derby. Easy money so hammers are all good all the time…munis that cursed maggot lair!

I can make Paladin non change gear FoH + Hammer + Very Strong Smite in 1 gear no swap no change with mana non-stop and CTA on swap !!! Try to think beter , mb you awnderstand something in Paladins Items he will kill fast at 3-5 players. I dont awnderstand why you need Holy Shock Aura ???!!!

The short answer? No it's not stronger, unless blizz nerfs hammers no other paladin build will come close. The long answer? FoH has come a long way, it's a lot better now. However, FoH requires a lot of investment to be good and even with BiS gear it's still pretty limited on where it can run. Compared to hammerdin, which can clear 90% of areas and do it faster with unoptomized gear. Even with a tele staff on swap before you can get enigma, hammer just clears so much faster. FoH is fun, but unless they make holy bolt just straight up deal damage to all enemies it's just not a realistic build for most content. With infinity it can be a pretty decent boss killer, and it's far easier to play than hammerdin, so i still like it.

Basically, hammerdin is more versatile, it's considerably faster at both clearing and single target, and requires less gear to get up and going effectively. FoH still fun asf to play though, and I wish they would make it more playable.

@@zackbryans4982 The only good thing about FoH is that you can run any aura you want, redemption, conviction, salvation, meditation, etc... They should have made a synergy with sanctuary aura but.. oh well.

Not even close, hammerdin is just better. FoH may be fun but so many areas of the game it is just garbage to use it. There is almost no where the hammerdin isn't viable and only a few places FoH is significantly more efficient.

Chaos Sanctuary is my favorite place to farm. And if FOH will be a bit safer and let’s face it, better at AOE (think about the time to spin up hammers), then I’m FOH all day. If I want to do cows, hammerdin runs into the same issue of safety, and I’m pulling up my lightning javazon anyway
