A "floating ring" is a ring that's coming from a chain, tatted using a 2nd shuttle. The reason for using the 2nd shuttle is so that the curve of the chain under the "floating ring" remains undisturbed. In a pattern, the double stitches of the chain would be counted up to the the floating ring, then the pattern would give the instructions for the floating ring. After that ring, the instructions would then give the number of double stitches for the next part of the chain. The floating ring doesn't "count" in the stitches of the chain, it's a design element "floating" off of the chain. I hope this makes sense.
