I had a sharping service back in the 1980 & 90’s. Over the years I sharpened well over 12,000 handsaws on the same Foley machine. Sharpens quite accurately if the saw blade is cleaned first allowing smooth feeding.

Back in the day (1950's-'60's), these were marketed as machines that would literally print money, and would be your way out of an otherwise dead-end job. The only problem was that there weren't many carpenters that wanted handsaws sharpened then. They'd made the switch to power saws. Same thing happened to hammers. Replaced by pneumatic nailers. Interesting nonetheless. Wish that I lived in your neighborhood. I have to sharpen my saws by hand. Many thanks for an enjoyable video.

Thanks for the video. I have had one of these for years along with the other Foley Belsaw tools but never took the time to learn to use it. Now that I'm retired I think it's time to get them out and see if I can make them work right.

Where did you ever find these machines!? Very few people would know what they are and even fewer would get them running. thanks for saving them and sharing with us.

+TheGreasemonkey76 Hi GreaseMonkey76, thanks for watching! I found these machines mostly locally, although none of them worked very well as found. I scrounged and traded and cajoled for parts, and found quite a bit of info on Mark Stansbury's website. He has a Facebook page for Foley users, too. I just enjoy old woodworking tools and when I chanced upon a Foley for a pittance, I jumped and started playing with it. I saw the potential (pun intended) and kept going. Visit us on WoodworkersZone.com, an online forum for other saw fellows and woodworkers of all abilities.

+WoodworkersZone.com where would I find parts for that same machine
@WoodworkersZonecom8 жыл бұрын
+Hector Paredes Hi Hector, it depends on which part you need. Foley still sells a few (very few) parts for these. otherwise, you can join the Foley Users Facebook group and inquire there. I also have several spare parts, some of which I'd be willing to sell. What do you want?

Hey there! I need the front file holder assembly. Meaning the 2 pieces in front that hold the file and triangular piece that marks the degrees.

This is a machine from the past , no real market for it. Few handsaws are used anymore and those are considered throwaways when dull . I used one when I was young with my father in our saw shop , remember those times well love you dad

Best to set the saw before sharpening, but you were learning then.

Pretty cool machine! Do you need to buy special files for it, or are they readily available? When sharpening saws manually you would normally need a variety of different sized files. Do you need a bunch of different files for this machine too?
@OldSneelock7 жыл бұрын
It's been a while since you asked and no response so I'll jump in. It doesn't take special shaped files for most work. The standard 3 corner and cant files will fit into the holders and they match the necessary tooth profile. Foley sold files to do special jobs but for most of the saws that this machine would be used for you use the same files as you would hand filing.

@@OldSneelock Sorry I missed your reply. Thanks very much for the info. I'm still keeping my eyes open for one of these machines and have learned a bit more about them since posting my comment. I also found the manual online and it says it takes standard 6 inch saw files, most of which are available from Lee Valley. Cheers.

You'll need to search Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and also check out auctions and estate sales in your area. They aren't sold new anymore.

Just a reminder, this was a pitted, unsalvageable blade. Not worth saving really, but good for practice and a demo.
