Thank you for this video. My Dad and I opened a saw shop in the fall of 1980 with all new F/B equipment. (He was 64)..387... retoother... power setter... emery for circular saws. ... Chain saws... you name it. We sharpened anything dull. 🙂 Of course Dad did most of the work. I was in another line of business. He gave it up 15 years later and passed away in 2002. I am now 71... getting ready to retire. I still have ALL the equipment and original operators manuals that Dad bought. I look forward to "re-learning" ... I have about a dozen or more hand saws to press back into service. 🙂 This video brought it all back... Thanks again ... Two Thumbs Up...

Best 30 minutes I've spent in a while! Excellent descriptions, and excellent camera work. I'm just learning how to use one of these, so this is incredibly helpful! Thanks.

Just recently aquire a 387 but no carrier...I believe I can make one. Could you maybe tell me what are the thicknesses of the spacers for the clamps? Great content!
@travischron31753 ай бұрын
Hey William. I got one of these a couple years ago without really knowing anything about it. Could never find a carrier for it, though. Am I wrong in thinking that theoretically you could sharpen your saws entirely with just cranking the wheel manually? I say this because I don't have a retoother and the friction wheel is rotted. Instead of getting a retoother and another friction wheel, i could just set the saw and use it as a convoluted, overly-expensive, saw filing guide?

@@travischron3175 you can buy parts for them. I bought a new drive roller for mine. I can't remember the company that makes the parts, but you can Google it and find them. And, yes, you can run the saw through with the hand crank. It's actually a little safer for saws without a good, even tooth pattern.

This is a great how to video. Do you have a retoother and power setter as well?

Hi William, am I wrong that a crosscut saw most of the times is turned 180 degrees to file the teeth pointing away from you
@williamprophett9148 Жыл бұрын
Not on this thing Harry. It wouldn't feed well with the teeth facing away from the pawl motion.
@williamprophett9148 Жыл бұрын
Hey Harry, your question is valid though. If I was hand filing the saw, it is more efficient to always file the tooth leaning away from you. If you look at it this way though, the 387 "is" filing the tooth leaning away from me "kinda"... it's just filing the back side of that tooth... But you are correct in the way you are asking the question. But you can't turn the saw 180 on this and have it feed correctly.
@williamprophett9148 Жыл бұрын
I "can" run it on the other tooth as well and angle the head the other way. But, I was following the procedure and directions for Joshua step by step from the book. If I didn't have the "book", I would run it different.... And that's OK as long as it's setup to feed correctly. One problem you can run into on this thing is it can cut the teeth uneven if you don't crowd the tooth to the right of the file. So it is better for consistency to follow the steps. I have run a saw and had to go back by hand quickly and even out the mess it made.

Foley may be out of business, but there are plenty of these machines still being used. I'm learning to use one now, and this video was extremely helpful!
