I've traced my dads line back to Surry in 1780. Love the old folk sound. Scots-irish!

Sat with Tommy Jarrell on a pick up truck tail at Galax in about 1979. He was GOOD!!

Tommy was one of the best. He and my grandma were the same age. He had a bow arm on him! And could make good biscuits and gravy.

That's Kenny Jackson (fiddle), Marianne Kovatch (banjo), with Bobb Head and Nancy Mamlin (guitars) at the beginning of the video. Good playing!

Great documentary! Being a 42 year old violin student I'm exploring all sorts of ways to play this instrument. And if it weren't for pandemics and all that, I would really love to visit NC just to learn more, and listen to this great form of music!

The old fiddlers conventions in Surry County and adjacent Galax Virginia are both excellent

It was called ‘old time music’ back in the 20s because it was. A lot of these songs and reels were brought over from Britain and Europe by the earliest settlers.

A shout out to Chester and Nick McMillian that appear in this video. They have spent their lifetime dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of Round Peak Old Time Music.

This is a great documentary! If anyone knows of any good sources for OTM on film or compact disc / cassette, please PM me and let me know. I've used Field Recorders' Collective, Document Records, Bear Family, County, Yazoo, BACM, and the Internet - what are some niche labels, like the Appalshop (Whitesburg, KY) with June Appal? I'm particularly interested in field recordings or homemade recordings, like with the LOC and Berea's 'Digital Library of Appalachia,' and would prefer not to rely on digital-only MP3 downloads alone/ Subscribed
