Follia (A. Corelli) en la Biblioteca Nacional de España

I’ve heard hundreds of interpretations of Corelli’s La Folia. This is, I believe, the tightest, crucially without sacrificing dynamics nor emotive range, version of it I’ve ever experienced. Also, it is very common for either the violin to overpower the other parts and/or finding some phrases with inconsistent pacing, neither of which happens here. This is, without much argument, the closest to perfection I’ve heard. Bravo! Thank you for sharing!

Un placer compartir con Ud. Gilberto la misma emoción y es que la música diría que diluye las fronteras lingüísticas y geográficas, cuando expresa sentimientos que permiten disfrutar de esa belleza que agradecen los sentidos y nuestro mundo interior, pues parece entonces que la Tierra toda girase aún confiada en qué esa "anomalía salvaje" que somos los humanos, podamos mostrar lo mejor de nosotros, gracias a obras que despliegan tanta armonía como está . La folia parece que surgió en Portugal cómo una música que activaba una danza pastoril alegre y desenfadada...paso por España con toques renacentistas y Lully y Marais la popularizaron en Versalles para pasar del barroco al clasicismo con una folia tardía que tendría a compositores como Vivaldi, el propio Bach en algunas cantatas, Salieri, Scarlatti y Händel entre otros además de Corelli, cuyo original tan bien interpretado en este tema reside en la biblioteca nacional de España, por eso algunas imágenes del video se recrean en la partitura... Cómo dato curioso que igual conoce Ud. en Brasil aunque no tenga musicalmente una estrecha relación con la Folia clásica, la cultura afrobrasileña mantiene con vida las llamadas Folia de Reís. Lo dicho, ha sido un placer comunicarme con Ud y compartir este espacio musical...esa geografía en la que nos reencontramos con ese sentimiento de fraternidad tan necesario en unos tiempos en el que parecen procurar que desaparezca el prójimo. En cambio lo sublime y puro sea lo más complicado e incomprendido para un mundo en decadencia. Excelente ejecución... fría como el hielo. Las notas de ese violín son de puro hielo, sin que ese excelente cello pueda calentarlas.La presencia del cembalo se nota por el color.

Every time I listen to this it literally haunts my dreams for days....yet I always come back. For some reason my mind latches on to the recursion and keeps trying to "work out" the patterns when I sleep....hard to explain.

Wonderful rendition, with subtle nuances! I expected something different and good based on my experience with French Radio and chamber music renditions. Bravo, and thanks for posting it. One remark, as from an old person: The bodily movements are truly distracting from the great playing and the music! Classical music, because of its usual depth and complexity does not need to be a 'show' also, in contrast to rock concerts for example. Rock and other such pop music concerts are meant to be 'shows' (live performance)....but NOT classical music - in my opinion. Hope I am not offending anyone. It is true that older people can't get adjusted to modern changes and complain about them. But I think, in this case, my comment is more than that.

As an old man myself, I fully agree with your remark about "showiness". I greatly admire a youg french harpsichordist, very much "à la mode" these days. To listen to him is a real pleasure, but looking at his stupid and exagerated gestures while playing is TORTURE!

What a very strange comment to make about dance music. ---- In the Oxford History of Western Music, Richard Taruskin describes a sonata da camera as "... essentially a dance suite, which Corelli adapted to the prevailing four-movement format (a preludio and three dances or connecting movements)." The movements either were given tempo indications or names that indicated the style of dance, e.g., corrente, sarabanda, or giga.[2]
