A demonstration of the Follow the Light pacing system at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield in 2017. The prototype has been designed and built by Dr Ben Heller and Dr Simon Choppin. The concept won funding support to develop the web interface from the Sport Technology Innovation Fund run by London Sport in 2016
Follow the Light is a system of LED lights mounted on a running-track that allows users to select appropriate pacing using a simple mobile web interface. It is designed to appeal to runners of all abilities from beginners to club and elite-level athletes. The benefits from this approach include:
- A safe, progressive and fun way of introducing novices to running, whilst controlling pace and distance to reduce injury risk.
- Customisable pacing profiles for experienced runners, allowing the implementation of sophisticated training sessions without requiring coaching support.
- Improving public use of athletics tracks, maximising the use of these valuable but expensive resources.
Pacing profiles can be continuous, or can consist of multiple segments of changing pace (including walking or standing breaks).
