When Faith Denefe, 8, was born, her parents thought the large red mark across the left side of her face was bruising from childbirth. They quickly learned it was a vascular anomaly known as a capillary malformation or “port wine stain.” Dr. Gresham Richter, a pediatric otolaryngologist, chief of Pediatric Otolaryngology and director of the Vascular Anomalies Center of Excellence at Arkansas Children’s Hospital and professor and vice chair of Pediatric Otolaryngology in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, has performed about 15 laser therapies on Denefe since she was 6 months old. The state-of-the-art treatments are lessening the redness of her vascular birthmark.
For 25 years, Arkansas Children’s internationally-recognized Vascular Anomalies Center of Excellence has provided highly-skilled, comprehensive care to patients. With a multidisciplinary team, the vascular anomalies program treats patients from the United States and globally with medical, surgical and laser therapy. One in every ten children is born with a congenital vascular lesion, and about 10 percent require treatment. Our team, ranked among seven Arkansas Children’s specialties in U.S. News & World for 2022-2023, regularly treats patients with various vascular anomalies. In 2008, the Center for Investigation of Congenital Aberrancies in Vascular Development at the Arkansas Children’s Research Institute opened and created a dedicated molecular and biology laboratory to investigate vascular anomalies. Our specialists have won awards for their work in the vascular anomalies field. Patients of the Arkansas Children’s Vascular Anomalies Center can expect excellent outcomes, an out-patient focus, telehealth options and access to clinical trials.
