@@Megaalith Merle Haggard was in San Quentin when Cash performed there, Cash, himself, never served time in any state prison. He had been arrested a number of times, petty crime, criminal damage, drunk-tank stuff, that sort of thing, but never served hard time. Interestingly, it was Cash playing the famous show at San Quentin that made Merle Haggard decide he wanted to be a musician. He said of Cash, "Any man who can out perform five strippers, in an all male prison, I want to be just like that son'bitch." - (There was a strip-show as the opening act of the San Quentin concert, by request from Cash himself. "Give the men something nice to look at, before they get a glimpse of me!") When asked why the prisoners, were so receptive to Cash, Haggard said, "He identified with us and he was the kinda guy that might've been in there with us, if things had gone the wrong way for him."

Johnny Cash would have appreciated this. Cash bridged the divide between Country and Folk/Pop music when he struck up a friendship with Bob Dylan, even going so far as to have Dylan on his TV show and covering some of Dylan's songs. This was at a time when many middle class adults viewed Bob Dylan as a "no good hippie stirring up trouble". Cash got a lot of flack for that but he was never afraid to reach out and crossover with other musicians not in his own genre. He had a similar friendship with Ray Charles and if you haven't seen Ray's cover of Cash's "Ring of Fire" I highly encourage you to look it up.
