OK, ok. They needed more rehearsals for damned sure. But the feeling is there. I've had plenty of times when I wasn't at my best, too. And if there's an afterllife, Gerry Rafferty wasn't off dissing a cover. He was jamming with Taylor and everyone else who dropped in.

This is not an easy song to cover and not screw up, as FF demonstrate. Rafferty was a perfectionist and a master of harmony. So if you mess up the balance (drums way too loud), leave out instruments (organ) and don't prepare (guitar) ... then this is what you get. The lead singer actually does well and I believe the background singers too, but we don't hear them in the mix, while harmonies were key to Rafferty's music.

Your comment is just confirmation that it wasn't an impressive rendition at all. Frankly, it could have been about 90% better in the hands of a guitarist could hit the notes, but his bends were way flat and it was kind of painful to listen do. The singer was mediocre and the rest were fine. Dave did great on drums, of course.

Rafferty is no longer earthbound either and it didn't do him honor at all. If they are serious about mourning a friend, they shouldn't do it half heartedly like this. It would be ok if someone broke down with sadness, but that's not what happened. They had a brainstorm and thought they would pull it off, the stars they are. Well, no.

They play a close harmony pop song as if it were power rock. The whole setup is aloof. The organ is not there, which forms the basic layer. The guitar is sloppy. The drums too loud. The musicians are too distant from each other. The lead and background singers can't see or hear each other either. I'm actually impressed with the singer's performance in this suicide mission.

This is under rehearsed and it shows. The singer is good, but the guitarist is unfortunately way off, and just hits the wrong chords and puts the band and singer off. Good to hear any cover attempted for a Gerry Rafferty song.
