I was in College when I saw Jerry Rafferty do this one and then 20 some years later the Foo Fighters picked it up and ran with it. BOTH versions are beautiful and powerful. Gerry Rafferty originally intended for the sax part of the original to be played on a guitar, but he wasn't able to find a guitarist when they went to record. so i feel like this is faithful to the original vision while still adding a unique spin. bravo to Dave for knocking this out of the park!

GR's original is amazing and one of the best songs in rock. FF made a cover that to me is brilliant. It is completely original yet they play every note of the original. They learned the song note for note, nuance for nuance and then took it apart and put it back together as their own. I've read all the comments below. Why compare? They are both art; they both stand on their own; and they are both brilliant. I dare any band (including my own) to take an iconic song, and make it original yet keep every nuance. There's something about Gerry Rafferty's original that brings back my childhood. I distinctly remember hearing this song piped through my parents' stereo and thinking there was something so beautiful and soothing about the saxaphone and how the song came together. The Foo Fighters did a great job of modernizing it. A lot of covers fail to deliver the underlying "feel" of the song but FF did a great job of keeping it intact despite the sax being replaced by guitar. It flat out rocks.

This is perhaps the best cover of a Gerry Rafferty song that I've ever heard in my life. At the time that this cover version was originally recorded, I could not find it on any Foo Fighters CD. I found out later on that it was only released on a Japanese import that they had done and was also the b-side to the song "My Hero." I used to hear this cover version just about every night after I'd get home from work on 96.5 The Mountain WDOD, which was then an alternative formatted station. Now they're just a pop formatted station, but they used to play some really great material back then that I couldn't hear no where else and that was where I discovered this cover version at, which Capitol has since released on the 10th anniversary edition of "The Colour And The Shape."
