fun fact... GR's original is amazing and one of the best songs in rock. FF made a cover that to me is brilliant. It is completely original yet they play every note of the original. They learned the song note for note, nuance for nuance and then took it apart and put it back together as their own. I've read all the comments below. Why compare? They are both art; they both stand on their own; and they are both brilliant. I dare any band (including my own) to take an iconic song, and make it original yet keep every nuance. To the comment about DG's voice, he nailed GR's vibe. Amazing work, as we have come to expect. Thank you!

Winding your way down on Baker Street Light in your head and dead on your feet Well, another crazy day You'll drink the night away And forget about everything This city desert makes you feel so cold It's got so many people, but it's got no soul And it's taken you so long To find out you were wrong When you thought it held everything You used to think that it was so easy You used to say that it was so easy But you're trying, you're trying now Another year and then you'd be happy Just one more year and then you'd be happy But you're crying, you're crying now Way down the street there's a light in his place He opens the door, he's got that look on his face And he asks you where you've been You tell him who you've seen And you talk about anything He's got this dream about buying some land He's gonna give up the booze and the one-night stands And then he'll settle down In some quiet little town And forget about everything But you know he'll always keep moving You know he's never gonna stop moving 'Cause he's rolling, he's the rolling stone And when you wake up, it's a new morning The sun is shining, it's a new morning And you're going, you're going home

There's something about Gerry Rafferty's original that brings back my childhood. I distinctly remember hearing this song piped through my parents' stereo and thinking there was something so beautiful and soothing about the saxaphone and how the song came together. The Foo Fighters did a great job of modernizing it. A lot of covers fail to deliver the underlying "feel" of the song but FF did a great job of keeping it intact despite the sax being replaced by guitar. It flat out rocks.

Someone even called their uncle and he just asked us if we were high and why were calling him so late at night wondering about the name of a song (we probably were) Finally, I remembered the Foo Fighters cover after listening to it on a local rock station and blurted out" Backer Street" and he finally was able to find and download the song. Kids today have no idea about the luxury of listening to any song at any given time without worrying about "pirating music".

I was a freshman in '78' when this song came out and it seemed like it on the radio constantly and that was fine by me! Really takes me back to a great time in life... awesome 😎

Just discovered this, outstanding, love how the rocky chorus comes in after daves soft singing and yet the lead guitar is tempered as if its coming from down a long corridor , what a great mix

I love the Foos' and I never thought of them doing this Gerry Rafferty song, it's interestingly refreshing. I didn't think younger people really paid attention to music I grew up with. Pretty cool.😮, Vic.

I used to listen to the Rafferty orig working construction for my dad when I was 14 and think, 'this song has a great sound, but it would be awsome if you rocked it out!' I am forever indebted to Mr. Grohl and friends for making this dream a reality!

Best cover song of any song by any band I’ve ever heard !!! Paying total respect to the original while putting their own stamp on it ! Awesome !

This was one of my moms favorite songs. Since she passed I love listening to the FF version because they are my favorite band.

Excellent cover of an iconic original. Both versions are great. Gerry Rafferty is a musical genius, and so is Dave Grohl.

Anyone notice how he said give up the crack instead of the booz like the original?

First up, I am not a fan of most covers, especially by modern bands, secondly I LOVE the original so I came here with low hopes. But this does sound fucking incredible. Not better than the original but a worthy tribute and a great song. I also always thought that sax solo would make a great guitar solo and it does!

Grave Flower Better imo but Ik most won't agree. For me this is actually one of my fav ff songs and I'm gutted as I can't find it on iTunes at all

I do covers with my electric guitar but I also write songs...I love what I do and I love good old music cause it's the best,it has feeling, not like today's music

My sentiments exactly! Rafferty aired the Original when I was in my 3rd year of College and it took Balls to cover this one. (I think that's why it was a "B" side) but Dave friggin' Grohl is a genius in his own right and they made a beautiful cover, which is more like a tribute. Simply beautiful song...

This is a great cover. I want to get on the interstate and floor it because I know I need to be somewhere else. Percussion adds intensity to the drive. Can feel a storm approaching and looking forward to it
