In my ongoing quest to fully understand "food aggression" in horses, I thought I would run a bit of an experiment here with my own horses to see how they react to me if I bring in some tasty num nums for them. Each horse reacted differently and this is part 1 of this test with Luke. I made sure to always have a camera running at anytime so there are zero cuts and you get to see it all as it goes. As I go about this experiment I talk about what I'm doing, thinking and what I think the horse is thinking. Hopefully this is interesting! The other three parts will be released quickly so you don't have to wait very long for them. Here is part 2: • Food Aggression In Hor... Here is part 3: • Food Aggression In Hor...

I taught my foody TWH mare to back into the back of the stall when I deliver food. Took a while, but now she knows to do it, and not challenge me. Now, I'm working on my new old man Appy. I think it's a good thing for horses to learn.

I saw a video recently where a guy did that... I think there are a few methods to get the job done, that isn't one I'd choose but I respect others' opinions. EDIT: To clarify, I have no idea what you're doing, I was referring to the video I saw where it was something like that. I think space can be very safe and smart thing to do when needed.

@@StableHorseTraining Basically, first I had a hard time, in general, teaching Lady to back, as she was allowed to bully her former owners, and has a generally willful attitude. It took a long time to gain her respect, but I'm patient, and just don't give in (I'm willful too!) Once I finally got her to back up, and get out of my space, it was just a matter of doing what you were doing - put myself between her and the food, back her up, put food down, and she gets it when I walk away. It was an entire process that's taken about two years, total. My pony also does this. They both also know to back up when I enter the stall, period. (I literally wave my hand at them, and just tell them to back up.) Nothing aggressive from me, or fantastic - just taking one piece at a time, then putting it all together. (Edit: I have to be creative with Lady, because she leans into pressure, and sets herself like a mule. The Appy is a new challenge - he was abused, and will challenge you out of fear. Apparently, I like a good mental challenge!)

Ok. That is teasing.

Sort of.. but my goal is to simulate what impatience might look like. If a horse went to a patch of grass and another horse came along and the first horse told them to not eat (whatever way they do that), it wouldn't be teasing. It would be "control of food security" I think. I'm trying to see it from the horse's perspective and less as a human.

it's intrinsic in horses make up, that they need to compete for food or power so that they survive. even if they can have access to food 24/7, like what you said. i like how you used a chest camera...you have done this on previous videos too but i think a head camera would give us a much better angle...just the right zoom i guess... just my cents worth :)

sort of, yes, food security is what I'm leaning towards as horses always want to make sure they have food right now. If we consider how we might act if we couldn't get to the grocery store because there wasn't one. How would we treat a food source? and why?
