Such a great video Lindsey. So many people think that a situation like this should be approached with a whip in one hand and a firm, loud "No"! I hope this shows those people that it is our fear that makes us do that and an aggressive approach would only serve to escalate the stress. Staying calm reassures the horse and allows him to trust. Thank you!

This girl is going to get someone hurt 😔 he just tried to kick at her and is talking to her saying he doesn’t want her around. It’s good she didn’t leave just cause of his kick because that would reward his behavior. The important part of food aggressive horses is they don’t get the food / reward without showing a good attitude. When he is being good then give him the feed

What about...whoever moves feet first loses? Petting a food aggressive horse who just made you move your feet has done nothing to change it's behavior. Blocking with your arm doesn't correct him trying to push you away, but does give him something to bite. I've got a much bigger horse who pins ears to get me away from his eating bubble. Um, I carry a whip and will not hesitate hitting his nose with my fist if he tries to bite me standing a few feet from him.

Thank you this really helps when a pet my yearling while shes eating hay/feed she kicks out and she even tried to bite my mom for walking passed so I've started to tie her in the hallway and brush her while shes eating, but she came from a place where she was bullied and had to fight for food so its definitely not her fault!

I made the mistake of being aggressive with my food aggressive horse (backed him up with a dressage whip, but did not hit him with it, just waved it with energy to move him back). Now he is more aggressive when feeding. I did this only once and it really affected him. How do I undo my ignorant ‘correction’ ?

I really liked this video but in a way you are rewarding him for being aggressive, just giving it out,but very good pointers

I didn't see Lindsey once reward him for aggressive behaviour. In fact, the horse is being defensive, not aggressive. So, as she said, it's important not to give him aggression when he shows defensiveness as things would only escalate because he would now feel that his defensiveness is justified. We need horses to trust and respect our calm leadership, not fear us. A fearful horse is a dangerous horse.
