Can you treat diabetes with herbs? It’s a controversial question, but one that my next guest Dr Merlin Willcox, may have the answer to.
Today, we’re diving into the world of therapeutic herbs and spices. Travelling across generations and cultures from around the world to discuss traditional medicine practices, whether they hold up to scientific scrutiny and if these herbs and spices have a place in our drug cabinets as well as our kitchens.
Dr Willcox has worked as a GP in the NHS since 2003 and currently works in a practice in Oxford. His research interests at the University of Southampton include global health, clinical trials of herbal medicines, and improving care for vulnerable people.
Dr Willcox has researched different aspects of primary health care in low-income countries, with a particular focus on child health, malaria and traditional medicines. He has been involved in several clinical trials of herbal medicines in Uganda, Madagascar, Mali and the UK and coordinates the RITAM network (Research Initiative on Traditional Antimalarial Methods).
We’re talking about a bunch of compounds today including moringa, ginseng, cinnamon, nigella, fenugreek, psyllium and will be discussing their potential mechanism of action plus the evidence for them. But please, if you are thinking of supplementing or trying these items, particularly if you have a condition or take pharmaceuticals, please do discuss this with your physician.

Herbs discussed in this video: Moringa, Aloe Vera, Fenugreek, Green Nettles, Psyllium, Karala. Note re: Cinnamon -- both the Cassia and Ceylon varieties contain coumarin (sp?) -- it's just that Ceylon Cinnamon has a considerable less amount of it.

I "sprout" fenugreek and put the sprouts on my salad. I have a jar of them and broccoli sprouts in my fridge right now.

Love the herbal info and tips! I'll pass it on to a couple of friends. Fenugreek can be sprouted - it's in several of my sprout mixes (organic sprouting modes from Sprout House)! sprouting increases nutritient content, and phyto enzymes- sulfurophane in broccoli sprouts, etc! I love nettles - a favorite is making spring pesto! I've got powdered moringa, and have thought of growing out as an annual. I have also used the Nigella seeds - they are blooming in my Oregon garden.

This video is so interesting. Thank you for presenting it to the public. I have friends living in south of Spain who have a moringa tree in their garden. It is their prized possession. They search online for recipes such as fricasés or soups (bouillon) from the Indian Ocean Islands or they use Indian food recipes. They love it and all its benefits and they are converts. Moringa seems to be a superfood and has high satiety index as well which makes it good for vegetarians or vegans. The drumsticks, and the flowers from this plant also are consumable and make interesting food.

There are some intetesting studies on PubMed concerning Mulberry Leaf and most berberine containing plants and their impact on blood glucose levels. I use Fenugreek capsules made with freshly ground seeds, 3 x '00' once per day.

We know broccoli sprouts are 50 to 100 times stronger than actual broccoli. I wonder if sprouting fenugreek makes it stronger?

I was surprised the berberine was not suggested it is an herb. But I guess you take it as a capsule because it’s a little better so you don’t use in cooking

In Ayurveda one should consume 6 different types of taste namely sour, sweet, salty, bitter (bitter gourd), astringent(eg pomegranate) and lastly hot. If there is imbalance in these then only disease coccurs.

sad to see that even in a pro herbal channel, thinking is limited to talks about a single marker of efficacy when plants work on so many levels synergistically. As well not even a mention that western science is itself more subject to bias and conflicts of interest than any other eastern or southern science. Let aside the lack of resources and mention of formulas broader and deeper spectrum of efficacy which nevertheless is thousands of years of experience. come on you can do better..
