Dr David Unwin is on the podcast with Sakina today. Many of you will recognise him as the GP from the Norwood Surgery in Southport, who is a strong advocate of lifestyle medicine and a low carb diet.
To date 110 of his patients have achieved drug free remission of their T2 Diabetes. He is the RCGP National Champion for Collaborative Care and Support Planning in Obesity and Diabetes and a RCGP Clinical Expert in Diabetes.
His work on diabetes has been published in multiple journals and it is pretty impressive. But Dr Unwin’s work is unconventional and doesn’t come without criticism from many academics who fear that a low carb strategy is not an appropriate diet longterm.
What I like about Unwins approach is the simplicity of it and how achievable it has proven to be for many of his patients. I also believe he genuinely cares about this huge problem.
What I feel this conversation lacks is a deep dive into mechanisms behind low carb diets, the applicability of it to the wider population, the pitfalls and where people can slip up. For example I know many patients who start a low carb approach on a Monday and fall back to high sugar consumption later in the week which is a dangerous combination of high fat, high sugar and is essentiall a standard American diet.
We’ll have to get Dr Unwin back on the pod at some point in the future but for now I’m sure you’ll enjoy listening to him talk about how he started getting interested in nutritional interventions and how we could start using them today.

While listening to this doctor, I can't help but compare with my GP, who tends to think he knows all about diabetes. He prescribed 33 units of insulin daily and said I have to take this thing for life, and there is no point of return. I found it to be arrogant and uncaring - took things in my hand, read books by pioneers in this school of thought, changed lifestyle and eating habits, switched to someone who can at least prescribe panels of tests to measure my progress while I work hard towards well being. Nature rewarded me with 11.9 A1C to 5.1 in 3 months. Keeping that for the last 6 months. Touch wood.

Because of David,I showed many patients here in Australia the low carb sugar infographics free on the public health collaboration UK website. Every patient had no idea of the hidden carbs in everyday products. They were told to eat them and no one was well with normal blood glucose. On my computer I had a sticky note ' keep the insulin low'. A great message.

@doctors_kitchen I'd like to tell my story in which Doctor David Unwin has an integral part. My story starts more than 10 years ago, when, here in the UK, the TV chefs known as The Hairy Bikers, introduced us to Professor Roy Taylor of Newcastle University and his revolutionary belief that Type 2 Diabetes could be reversed by a very low calorie diet. I filed this information in my memory bank and decided that if ever I was diagnosed with T2D I would turn to his research to tackle it. Fast forward to March 2022 and I was seriously ill. I weighed 126kg. My triglycerides were 4.7. My HBAiC was 50mmol. I had T2D and was a heart attack waiting to happen. My Doctor prescribed Metformin and Statins. Before I left the surgery I was interviewed by the nurse Kath Moran. It was she who gave me the direction I needed. She explained that the food we know as starch is in fact polysaccharide sugar and turns to glucose in the blood. I went away and instead of collecting the medicines I researched Professor Roy Taylor. At that time I was working with a wonderful chap called Max Bramfitt who understood the Ketogenic diet. He taught me about grams of carbohydrate and how to read food labels. He looked at my can of oxtail soup and pointed out that at 28g of carbs it represented more than half of my daily allowance of carbs. I researched keto on Google and found that with my level of understanding "Healthline" was my best friend. I threw away the prescriptions and embarked upon the keto lifestyle. By August 2022 I had gone from 126kg to 109kg so asked for another set of bloods which happened on August 4th. At this time I discovered KZbin and my my first port of call was Dr Sarah's legendary,revolutionary, Tedex talk. From there I discovered Dr's Ken Berry, Jason Fung and David Unwin. On August 9th I received an urgent phone call from Sandra, chief diabetes nurse at my medical centre. I nearly panicked! BUT she needed to know what on earth had happened? I not only was no longer diabetic but was not even close to pre Diabetes. Mmol down to 36 from 50. Triglycerides down from 4.7 to 1.2 and both HDL and LDL had risen dramatically. Thankfully they are a practice which understands that high cholesterol is not automatically a bad thing. She cancelled my follow up routine consultation on August 22 but nurse Richard made the call anyway as HE wanted to know how I'd achieved the miracle. Low Carb High Fat. Ignore the mainstream medical advice. We are now in May 2023. My weight is a steady 96kg. My skin and digestive health is so much better. I am much more mobile again. With the help of all the above named I have turned my life around. I now preach Low Carb to all who will listen. The evidence of my 25% reduction in body mass means that people take me seriously. I want the whole world to follow the example of Dr David and all the other brave medics who dare to Qquestion conventional wisdom.

Great video. I began my Keto journey 4 mos ago and have lost 43 lbs. I’m a 61 yr old man with T2 diabetic and have put my disease into remission (A1C of 7 is now 5.4), cured my chronic arthritis, IBS, high blood pressure is now normal and so much more. Meat and Veg with some cheese and occasional nuts and berries is a delicious and nutritious menu and I don’t even miss the sugar, grains, starchy root vegetables and industrial pre-processed foods… they are to be avoided at all costs. Started at 292 lbs and am now 249 and we’ll on my way to my goal of 215!!

you do know that's because you cut calories and lost weight, and not because there is any magic to keto, right?
@Papacarnivore15
@Papacarnivore15 10 ай бұрын
@@jimsturt I haven’t counted calories for over 5 mos. There’s no need to count calories on Keto, that’s the beauty of it. I eat 2-3 meals per day and eat until I am comfortably stuffed. With virtually all other diets there is portion control… with Keto, as long as you’re eating the right healthy foods and a sounding highly processed foods, sugar and super unhealthy veg seed oils, you can eat until you are 100% satiated and full and still lose a ton of weight. I was 292 lbs with chronic arthritis, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, terrible acid reflux and sleep apnea, IBS, anxiety and depression. ALL of these conditions have been reversed and/or eliminated. I am now off all meds with an A1C of 5.6 (was over 7), perfect blood pressure, arthritis has been gone since only 3 wks on Keto, IBS gone, acid reflux, sleep apnea and snoring gone, and my mental clarity and focus are off the charts… off all my meds for both conditions, and my energy is now through the roof. If you can show me a diet that can achieve any or all of these then I’d love to know what it is. btw I’m a former 10 yr vegan and all it did for me is make me sick, depressed and anemic. I was also plagued by IBS and stomach issues from all the raw and cooked veg. I also had to take many supplements to replace the vitamins and minerals that were lacking from not consuming animal proteins. I also worked out 5 days a week and still couldn’t lose weight. NOT RECCOMENDED.
@jimsturt
@jimsturt 10 ай бұрын
@@Papacarnivore15 that's cool - and great it worked for you - but keto people need to be honest it still boils down to calories. a lot of people can't do keto, and if they think it works by some kind of magic it could be even more damaging to their efforts to get healthy
@Papacarnivore15

@@jimsturt Thanks for your reply. You mentioned that a lot of people can’t do Keto… who are they specifically? How hard is it to just eat healthy meat, seafood, fish and vegetables with some nuts, seeds, cheese and berries? It’s alot easier than one might think actually and has been super easy for me to significantly improve my health. Have you watched any of Dr Ken Berry’s videos on KZbin? I think you would really enjoy them and learn a ton more about the Proper Human Diet (which includes Keto, Ketovore and Carnivore varieties). He is a rock star in the Keto and Carnivore communities and has almost 3 million subscribers. Take care!!

Really good interview. Educating doctors in this is so very important. I was lucky enough that when I was becoming pre-diabetic, my doctor recommended a low-carb diet. That started me on thoroughly investigating all the aspects involved, and I have maintained a low carb diet ever since. That's probably getting on for 4-5 years now, giving great health benefits for me in multiple aspects. So all my doctor had to do was to give me a bit of information, and a nudge in the right direction, and I have been able to maintain that effective dietary regime ever since. But others I know are not fortunate enough to have that same recommendation when they visit their GPs. And that professionally endorsed suggestion is vital - anything I may say to family and friends does not come with the same weight as if coming from a doctor. So it would help enormously if the healthcare system as a whole was giving this information out much more widely and consistently.

It would be helpful if, in making references to "rice", Dr Unwin could differentiate between white rice and brown rice, as I have been given to believe that the body responds much better to digest brown rice than it does to white rice, which is known to cause a much greater increase in blood sugar.

When Ii was in London 2014 to 2016 I was enrolled in an excellent programme through my Dr to help me lose weight, we visited with a Dr, psychiatrist, physio and nutritionist. Excellent. Unfortunately I came back to N Z and got depressed and stepped backwards. Unfortunately I never kept notes to refer back to,

I think it’s so sad that the NHS does not recommend low carb. I was diagnosed pre-diabetic and have spent my whole life believing my diet which was high carb ie rice, pasta, potatoes and low fat to be healthy. It’s only by searching online that I discovered this was causing insulin resistance but unfortunately the majority of the population are not aware of this. I’ve been low carb for 5 months and feel amazing and completely lost my desire for sugary foods.

Does reversal of diabetes return to the person to normal? Or, like alcoholics, have we been damaged by sugar/insulin and have to severly restrict for the rest of our lives? I have used Freestyle Libre to learn how foods affect me. I have noticed that early in my transition to low carbohydrates half a plum would noticeably raise my blood glucose. A handful of months later, an entire orange or apple have negligible effects on my blood sugar after a meal. Many foods taste better after attempting to eliminate sugar in all of its forms. I used Freestyle Libre for a month in Seattle, USA to learn about the food. I have just started learning about the foods in my winter home in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico with a month of Freestyle Libre. My health service in Seattle does not assist with continuous glucose monitors. Nor, do they use testing of fasting insulin - except if they suspect type 1 diabetes. Levels got me access to Freestyle Libre. Fantastic. Now I hope to use private laboratories in Mexico to see if I have gained insulin sensitivity.

I've watched a number of Dr. Unwin's presentations etc. This is by far the most 'user / layman' friendly - not tons of science slides, just very clear, accessible information which can help an individual take back control of (or indeed reverse!) their lifestyle induced chronic conditions.

It's possible that making dietary changes, such as cutting out sugary foods and refined carbohydrates, could help improve your blood pressure. Consuming a diet that is high in added sugars and refined carbohydrates has been linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure and other health issues. By reducing or eliminating these types of foods from your diet, you may be able to lower your blood pressure and improve your overall health. However, it's important to note that everyone's body is different and the effectiveness of dietary changes can vary from person to person. Not all carbs are equal, people tend to lump them all together in one category when actually they are very different (so my video on what bread to eat is best?) we also respond to them differently. It's also important to consult with a healthcare professional before making any significant changes to your diet or stopping any prescribed medication. They can provide guidance on the best approach for you to manage your blood pressure and ensure that you are doing so safely and effectively.

I'm on a carnivore diet, I have listened to Dr Berry in the past and that's when I started carnivore. I drink my water out of 1qt. Bragg vinegar bottles and add 1/2 tbls. of Redman Realsalt salt to every bottle, along with other things, but the point is I drink 3-4 qts. of water a day and my sodium level is in the normal (low side) all the time. There are 2 books I should think you should read 1.) Lies My Doctor Told Me, and 2.) The Salt Fix. I read the first one but not the second one. I don't believe anything Dr. say any more after the lies they told about t he covid crap, so I have to research for myself, and I would suggest the same for everyone.

You need to add a pinch of Celtic Salt (grey) in colour in your diet. It has 87 minerals maybe more. I put few grains in my tongue before I drink water. I’m getting my moon back on my nails, tinutitis is almost gone, my dizziness is barely there anymore. The salt helps your body absorbs water in cellular level.

I understand you not wanting to interfere with other doctors advice Dr Unwin, but my GP told me I was prediabetic earlier this year and the ONLY advice he gave me was to come back for another test in a year! I have researched online and self referred to the NHS/Reed diabetes prevention programme. Very disappointed in my GP practice who I presume are waiting for me to become diabetic before doing anything.

He didn't say what normal blood sugar was, he just said within range. How many carbs daily but he only said don't eat starchy foods. My doctor has me on 30 g carbs per meal or less. Is this low enough? I did drop my a1c from 9.1 to 7.4 in three months.

I reversed my father's type 2 diabetes by fasting, starting day with fruit juices, by eating twice in a day, no tea break or snacks religiously eating twice in a day, doing moderate exercise like brisk walk and meditation. He is vegetarian and 68 years old. Stress and sleep make a big difference. They are more important than diet and exercise so first control sleep and stress.

Sorry, but starting the day with fruit juices might be the worst thing you can do. It's pure concentrated sugar and no fiber causing a massive glucose spike. How could that work? I'm just wondering... But vegetarian food, good rest and meditation are a very good idea!
