Today on the podcast I have the pleasure of talking to Simon Mills, a complementary health pioneer from the inception of the term in 1979, and later in the fields of integrated health, selfcare and social prescription.
He graduated from University of Cambridge with a degree in medical sciences and has been a herbal practitioner in Exeter since 1977. He was Special Adviser to the House of Lords Select Committee 2000 report on Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
In 2016 he was appointed as Herbal Strategist at Pukka Herbs, leading new initiatives, clinical research, and most recently reducing antibiotic demand.
Within herbal medicine, he established the first Masters programme in the USA, writing seminal textbooks, and publishing research including randomised controlled clinical trials.
I never managed to source the herbs to support my liver prior to my stag party so I can’t attest to those! But I’ll be diving into www.herbalreality.com to see ways in which to increase the phytochemical diversity of my own diet.

My 8 year old *daughter decided to follow her horse around and sample his choice in food . This may not be the exact right way to do this since she was in a horse pasture , but what does that matter to a kid . She came to me excitefly telling me that horses eat a really good salad . She said some plants are salty some spicy, some sour , some sweet , some bitter, some are soft and easy to chew, some taste like fruit some taste really green, some are tough to chew, and some are soft. She was so excited about her little experiment. Herblism has become one of her great interests . By the way her horse lived to the ripe old age of 36, very old for a horse.

I was a tourist in Jamaica taking a tour with a 14 year old boy. Each time we passed a plant, he would tell me the medicinal properties and what it was good for. I asked him how he knew so much about plants. He responded that his family could afford to go to the doctor so they went to the ROOT doctor. Since then I perused making tinctures from the medicinals in my yard. I may become the root doctor before long.

Yea and people live less longer here on average than west. Herbs don't work if you cook them in refined oil. We have been consuming herbs in daily cooking all wrong way by cooking it in bad refined oils. Doesn't work that way. Best way is herbal teas. Over eating of grains like wheat here is not beneficial as well. Lots of carbs and lots of carbs is not good.

I’m in the business of getting myself off pharmaceuticals! Before even watching this show I researched natural remedies for lowering cholesterol. I was told by my doctor that the pharmaceutical he put me on I would never be able to come off of it, and no way I could just stop taking it. Guess what? Came up with my own concoction and it resolved my high cholesterol. At annual exam I was told levels were great and did I need a refill? I said no, I stopped taking it a year ago, and never will I ever go back on it.

Me too! Red yeast rice and plant sterols plus adding ginger lemon honey extra plants and researched a lot of herbs and supplements! Manage to reduce my cholesterol in half! Dr was shocked asked what I’d used and wrote it all down lol 😂 They gave me a drug with side effect of sudden cardiac death! 😱🤷‍♀️ Red onions and garlic help cleanse the arteries and resided my blood pressure and had horrific stomach pains got a toxicology test had over 20 heavy metals in my system used chlorella and spirulena to detox! Slipperly elm and milk thusly also aids the stomach to recover Add natural yoghurt for good bacteria and honey and lemon juice (VitC) if you’ve got an upset stomach or flu - and you’ll help your body recover quicker! Most colds and glue come mostly from sick animals used in agriculture and bad science tea arch land infecting more and more animals with various diseases and no biosecurity properly enforced then they put sick animals in the human food chain! All their prescribed drugs you will notice have 20 or 30 bad effects all the effects toxins have on the body! Nausea headache tingling dizziness and much worse as they’re all based on flaws animal experiments! So many people learn the hard way how toxic prescribed drugs are for the body! Herbs and plants - This is natural medicine for us that was belittled by those peddling toxic drugs in the medical system - our society has been duped by big pharmaceutical companies for a long long time total Madness! Thanks for people like this educating the world about herbal medicine and plant medicine now! 🙏

I was searching for a feeling of purpose, being appreciated, being loved in many different wrong places such as career achievements, clubs, others’ opinions, etc. I worked hard for many years to graduate and have a stable high paying job and acquired most of the materialistic pursuits I’ve ever wanted but that spike of happiness didn’t last until I had enough and started to ask myself many existential questions that truly make this life matters and that’s when I got out of severe depression and actually experience how it is to be fully alive rather that being like a puppet and just let my life pass me by. So many sacrifices are needed to actually attain the authentic life I was scared of facing for so many years so that I can stay in my comfort zone but be miserable. I will be uploading videos that I hope can inspire others as well. It takes time but I will never stop

I wouldn’t have appreciated the importance of health if I didn’t get sick. I wouldn’t have realized the importance of real love if I haven’t witnessed my parents’ relationship slowly fall apart. 24hrs before my first daughter was born. I went to the supermarket and saw chicken and then SAGE, I suddenly began to crave the sage like a mad person, having not used it or thought about it for years. I bought 2 big bunches and cooked it with the chicken. That morning I went into labour. I haven’t eaten it since. I’m sure that the sage had something to do with the labour, which was a successful, drug-free, home birth. Your body will tell you what you need, but you must be able to see the food/s, and probably have experienced them before. Which is why, exposure in childhood is critical.

One of the most important herbs is simple dandelion. Use the WHOLE PLANT, flowers, leaves, stems and roots. Externally it is great for skin health. The roots are like a cross between potato and carrot. The leaves are good for salad, or sautéed in butter. The white latex that comes out of the stem, or root is a good wart remover. The plant is a very powerful anti cancer treatment, taken daily as a whole plant tea.

This was very interesting and I read some books. I tend to use the (edit: not sure what I meant here) protocol now. People here in Appalachia with this type of skills and knowledge are called Granny Witches. I find that an odd name, I'm not a witch but folks 200 yrs ago thought it was magic.

An important note here. Do not use bitters if you have a peptic ulcer as they increase stomach acid. And do not use bitters if you have had your gallbladder removed. When the gallbladder is removed the person can develop chronic diarrhea and has a significant increase in the risk of intestinal cancer due to dumping of caustic bile in to the intestines. Normally bile is secreted in very small amounts being released by the gallbladder. Without the gallbladder bile instead dumps in large amounts in to the intestines leading to intestinal inflammation that leads to the diarrhea and increased risk of cancer. Since bitters increase bile release this can aggravate these issues in people who have had their gallbladder removed previously.

@@bridgereyes951 Bitters can be found in food , beverages, and herbs, just google. Many people take liquid herbal bitters like Swedish Bitters. As I mentioned before, if you have a peptic ulcer, or gallbladder removed, avoid bitters. The alternative are Capsules . Capsules bypass the bitter receptors on the tongue and therefore do not have the same effect as contacting the tongue. The vagus nerve is stimulated by the stimulating the bitter receptors on the tongue.

Just found your account and it's exactly as I have known for years since a young child. I enjoyed the Podcast. I learnt alot. Our bodies are happier when we learn to invest in our heath instead of visiting the doctors. In the UK it's quite hard to get a doctor to see face to face so taking care of ourselves is essential now. I am so happy from what I watched coming from a Caribbean family who use lots of spices in their food. The power was alway in the herbs and I knew one day people would have to come right back from where they started Mother Nature's always knows best she does. Turmeric Milk is what saved me from going to hospital after contracting Mild Covid but I also had Jesus with me as the infection was trying to head to my Lungs but I remember hearing my late elderly Mum talking about Turmeric Milk and Honey 🍯 I was better after 48 hours and I love Green Tea. Now, it's Cod liver oil due to Pre Menopause and fruits but those which helps inflammation stay at bay and removed completely. The body is increasingly intelligent at healing itself. We mess around with our bodies far too much. All our bodies need is a little assistance now and again but we have to be very tuned in as to when our bodies need such help as long as we are doing our bit by eating foods that are best for us even though we may not even like them. 😄
