Last summer while camping we had German neighbors at the next site, a husband and wife with a one year old. My friend noticed the wife struggling with the water pump and went to help her. She said, OH! Like BEER! That made me laugh. My kind of girl. So later as a thank you she brought us over some fixings for SMORES! And she was SO excited about making smores for the first time because they had never heard of them in Germany, and they thought they were so good! lol

In my family here from southern germany, if we have a Grillparty usually there are all types of salads (Eisberg salad, tomato, cucumber, carrot, pasta, potato, raddish, everything) and then year the garlic and herb bread. For what we put on the grill: It's mostly Steaks and Sausages, sometimes if you can find them some Fackeln (lean cuts of pork belly, marinated and then wrapped around a wooden skewer). And now that I'm vegan, there is a lot of veggies on the grill too, like zucchini. It's also not uncommon to grill some goat cheese. Sometimes someone will even bring some dessert which is mostly watermelon or jello

I always grill zucchini, cut length wise, in half and yellow squash, corn on the cobb on direct heat...and another I learned to really like is cabbage quartered and placed in a corner so it slowly roasts...I season all the different vegetables with various herbs and spices and coat them good with olive oil...half an apple coated with butter and cinnamon is also good..

Also there are a lot of vegetarian or even vegan burgers and sausages out lately. So yeah, "grillen" is awesome(even without meat). Oh and also there is a german thing called "stockbrot" where you make bread dough and bake it on a wooden stick over the fire :)

When we grill at home there are many things: steaks, sausages, vegetable skewer, sometimes lamb and grilled cheese. And then there are pasta salad, potato salad or potato wedges with some other vegetables from the oven. My mother and I often make dips, butters and sauces: curry dip, one with garlic and onion and some more with herbs and flowers( its a bit sweet). And then there is of course bread or baguette. And Ketchup and Senf. Wow- its really much when we go all out. But we are 6 people (including grandparents), so yeah! I love it sooo much. I really got me hungry right now. Unfortunately the season starts again next april.

Another important thing is not just what goes on the grill but what you actaully use to produce heat! In Germany we don't use gas grills that often instead we mainly use coal, or in some regions we use wood (which also gives the meat a nice smoky flavor).

I'm originally from TX now living in the Saarland region. Our neighbors threw many grillparties during the summer and we had some bbqs too. Although, maybe for our sake, they always referred to their grillparties as bbqs. My neighbor has a lovely garden and makes an awesome fresh beet salad as a side dish. Nudelsalat is another. And her potatoe salad is by far better than any I've had in the states. Well other than my mother's. Lol. Also there are always stuffed peppers, mushrooms, and olives. Omg so lecker! Those bacon skewers! I forget what they are called. Ok now I'm hungry...

Well Dana here in Southern California we also have several items that we grill pretty much all year round ; Here's something that you might be able to do; Chicken Thighs , place skinless chicken thighs in a large bowl , add salt n pepper , crush a couple of cloves of garlic , shake some soy sauce add a couple of shots of tequila ( depending on how many thighs you will be grilling) and fill the bowl with orange juice cover and put in refrigerator for the marinade to do its magic usually an hour to three hours an hour or so before grilling to bring chicken to room temperature , place on grill and wait till you taste This ! There is also Carne Asada and we also grill T Bones , porterhouse steaks, sausages and other things ill leave that info for a latter post Bonne Appetit !

Growing up with a German mom and an American dad, many of our meals can be classified as "Germerican." And BBQs are no exception. usually we do brats and burgers. As far as side dishes go, we kinda mix and match depending what we feel like. there's almost always German potato salad or baked beans. one or the other. very rarely both. And then either devilled eggs, corn on the cob, Blaukraut, and/or paste salad. and usually an assortment of pickles, olives, summer sausage, and cheese cubes.

I'm from Germany and from my childhood , a "Grillparty" consisted of "Bratwurst", "Nackensteak", "Holzfällersteak", sometimes Chicken, Schaschlik and other meat. Side-dishes were fresh vegetable salad, sometimes Potato-salad, maybe a german variation of coleslaw, bread (Baguette, ...) Ketchuppy sauces and medium or hot mustard. I mostly enjoyed the bigger Grillparties with my Parents in their Sailing Club with about 100 people bringing their own things, putting it all together and after grilling not recognizing which was what... ;-) Now I got somehow addicted to Texican/US-Style of BBQ, making Pulled Pork in a Ugly Drum Smoker, Spare(Loin)Ribs and other reciepes including that thick sauce-covered style. For a planned BBQ-Party that is a great fun because the most guests are open to new tastes and they like it. On the other hand for spontaneous "Cookouts" the "german way" of grilling is better. One goes shopping sausages and meat, one makes a salad out of what the fridge provides and one starts the charcoal and in 30min you're ready to eat.

Here's how austrians do it: In my girlfriends family, it's a tradition to celebrate a huge Grillparty (where the whole family is invited) atleast once a year. The task allocation: While the women arrange the side dishes (Potatoes, pasta salad/other salads, tzatziki, grilled vegetables, garlic bread, sauces, etc.), Men look after the meat and the sausages. Traditionally, we have pork steak, chicken fillets, bratwurst, cheese kransky (Käsekrainer), berner sausages (Berner Würstel) and sometimes skewers. While the food itself is very important, we also use the cookout as our annual family meeting, chatting about important family matters and having fun until late at night. You should really come visit us next summer :P

I'm from Missouri, and it's always been popular in our area (just 100 miles north of St. Louis) to do use pork based bbq. We still do burgers and hotdogs of course, but my specialty has always been grilled pork steak (or blade steak depending on where you are buying it in the US). You sear both sides and then proceed to layer on the sauce (I always blend a hickory with a honey flavoured sauce) until each side is coated and the steak is done. It takes about 15 minutes to cook 3-5 steaks, and they usually get at least 3 coats of sauce per side.We like to have this with a baked sweet potato (topped with butter and/or brown sugar), a green veggie like steamed peas or fresh corn, and mac 'n cheese. These are usually the job of my mother to decide and make, as I do the grilling. I'm also the baker in the family so usually I will make something like brownies or cake for dessert, or we will have a 'dutch apple' pie from Mrs. Smith's (frozen pie brand). We also use a gas grill here, so we grill year round as long as there is no snow on the ground. I've been known to grill when it was about 40 outside by wearing a hoodie

Hey, interesting video! What I really adore for cooking-out are my so called "pizza torches". To prepare them I make a pizza dough and cut it into slices of a few centimeters. I like to strew some pizza herbs over the dough and put a slice of bacon on it (mostly the sizes match perfectly). After that I roll the dough with the bacon inside onto a little spear and grill it for a few minutes. To use the rest of the pizza dough I make a "pizza bread". I put it in a pizza form, put a little bit of olive oil onto it and some garlic and rosemary. Of course I bake it in a normal oven. It is not that common but very tasty. We love it! Best wishes

Oh we have a lot of stuff to put on the grill :) Beside meat and sausages there a many vegetables, fish, cheese... we even grill bananas. :D And is really importent to lay the meat for steaks in a sauce hours before the bbq starts. The sauce is homemade most of the time and can contain whatever you want from garlic to herbage. We're also good at putting our food in tinfoil and then on the grill. It's a good way because it's permanent warm and the fish or cheese won't fall through the cooking grate. We also put potatos in tinfoil and lay them in the blaze. Sidedishes are many different types of salad or bread. There are normal Salad, potato salad, noodle salad, cucumber salad, tomato salad... we love salad for bbq. We also like the many different sauces you mentioned but the most important thing to add to meat on every grill party is herbage butter. In my whole life I wasn't on a single grill party without herbage butter. Garlic butter, Zaziki and garlic cream are also popular but the german endless love goes to herbage butter. :D Even if we are finished with eating and are full - it is still possible to eat a slice of grilled bread (toast or brown) with herbage butter. Sometimes we also like to experiment with food on the grill. So we had burgers, filled with cheese, or feta cheese with oil and herbage and garlic in tinfoil. Whatever you can imagine - try it on the grill :)

One thing we do is, you'll cut a banana (don't peel it) on the inside of the curve (it's hart to describe) from nearly the top to the bottom and stuff chocolate inside. then put it on the grill until the chocolate is melted. The peel will get black but thats ok. when its done you can scoop the banana/chocolate mixture directly out of the peel into your mouth.

I guess there are really big regional differences here in Germany. In Thuringy, where I live, we grill mainly "Thüringer Rostbratwurst" (a special grilling sausage ... those are the best) and "Rostbrätel" (it's pork neck marinated in beer, onions and pepper for several days) on a charcoal fire. If the fire is getting too hot we cool it down with a good splash of beer (the so called "Löschbier"), so meat and sausages get a really good charcoal-smoke and beer taste. Another thing here is "Mutzbraten", it is pork with marjoram, pepper, salt etc. grilled while being rotated over several hours over a birch wood fire. After all served with "Sauerkraut" and mustard. It is very common in East Thuringy and West Saxony in autumn.

I'm used to mostly just grilling pieces of meat, not too different from frying in a pan. Sometimes there are sausages, but most of the time it's slices of pork, beef or some steak. There is one thing in particular that I really like though, and I have no idea how common or widespread it is. After eating, when there's still some heat on the grill but not quite as much, you put bananas on there and let them cook until the peel gets black. You then put one on your plate, cut it open, add some ice cream on the side and drizzle syrup over the whole thing. (Adding chocolate syrup as well is optional) I love it, and that's strange because I don't usually like bananas! But that hot, kind of mushy banana with the cold ice cream and sweet syrup, that's just lovely and it's basically the taste of summer to me :)

Our favourite are grilled tomatoes seasoned with salt, pepper, oregano and basil (dried herbs). Eggplant you can season the same, but you should add a thin coating of oil first. Corn on the cob, gets a layer of butter on it before it goes on the grill. Chilli Halloumi is a must too. Button mushrooms taste best when seasoned with freshly picked herbs, garlic and a little oil. For meat I like lamb seasoned with garlic and thyme and a little oil. For beef I prefer to just add a little salt and pepper afterwards. For pork I can recommend the "Grillgewürz Argentina" by Kotanyi. Fish gets delicious with herb salt. My partner also likes shrimp, I think he made them with a little garlic, but am not sure since I don't eat them. If you pack them in aluminium foil with a little oil, you can also make sweet potatoes, beetroot, potatoes and other such vegetables. We sometimes like to do those packs as side dishes, but those need to go onto the grill first, since the vegetables need a lot of time to cook through. As condiments we like to have a colourful salad with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, feta, olives and herbs as well as Tzatziki, herb butter and garlic bread. Dessert is usually grilled bananas either with or without chocolate. Grilled apples also taste good.

American here. Rarely do we grill anymore (in my family) almost always it's barbecue. A fainliy favorite is Pork Shoulder (often called pork butt) Smoked for at LEAST 6 hours. A small foil tray is used to catch any drippings. A mixture of oil and Apple Cidar vinegar is put in a spray bottle and sprayed on the meat every half hour until the shoulder reached 190F then it's taken off and rested. It's so tender at this stage that a knife is useless. Normally we shred it with two forks and mix it in the pan of drippings and sauce (not always BBQ sauce) and made into sliders or sandwhiches or just eaten as is with sides. Our favorite sides are potato salad, grilled corn (in the husks), Homemade baked Mac n' Cheese, Carmelized onions and grilled mushrooms, Stuffed jalapenos , fruit salad and the ever popular Watermelon.

You need to try filled Paprika and filled Onions. You need grambled Meat, mixed with some Egg and old crushed Bread and some Salt and Pepper. Fill it in the the Paprika or the Onion, wich you prepare for filling earlier, and wrap some Bacon around. This is so delicious from a grill...

[Hamburg] At our bbq's when we're choosing the food, we usually include a green salad, potato salad and someone brings a noodle salad. cut paprika, cucumber, potato crisps or popcorn, and salty biscuits. We usually grill Merguez (beef) sausages, Nuremberg Sausages (sometimes)wrapped in bacon, then skewered after cooking, "sausage on a stick!" for the kids), turkey/poultry sausages, chicken wings, turkey breast steaks, tiger prawns or fish in foil. Sometimes we'll make some beef steak or lamb. We also include grill cheese, zucchini steaks, portabello mushrooms, beefsteak tomatoes, onion rings, and paprika for the vegos and vegos at heart. When its more of a potluck, then we'll do sausage on a stick for the kids, beef or poultry sausages, to share, a bit of fish for us, the grilled vegies, and the usual sides. Others then bring whatever they wish to eat or share.

Oh, and if we go out, to a grillpartie, the bbq is often covered in pork sausages of various descriptions, pieces of marinated pork, the occasional bits of chicken, or fish and not much else.

My grandma made the best pea salad. I loved that stuff. Luckily my mom knows the recipe but it's never quite the same, mostly but...you know... But we've always done homemade potato salad and if my mom is feeling up to the effort, she has an awesome recipe for homemade baked beans. Sometimes too we have crying cucumbers. Depends on what we feel like and how much effort we want to put in at the time. And how many people we're feeding. XD

Grilling Boston Style: Italian Sausage. Poke some holes to allow grease out to drip & to burn & smoke. Ears of Butter and Sugar Corn-on-the-Cob still in the husk off to the side, cooked until a wee bit burnt. Hamburgers mixed with spices. Chicken marinated in lemon juice and beer.

I love this specific curry ketchup! But the only place I've seen it (I think it's a "spicy" version as the color of the bottle branding isn't green but red/orangeish) is in the Mensakeller of JKU in Linz, Austria. I always get it for their pizza, it's delicious! Garlic butter is something my family has for nearly every time we light the grill.

at my place we love to eat Merguez sausages. They are spicy and in Germany usually made out of pork, but originally they are made out of lamb in France region Elsass. And because we are next to the border is the only region where you can find them in Germany ;)

Since 2 or 3 years, I own a Char Griller directly from the USA. Good grills in germany are really expensive and grilling on gas has become normal here. So it could be hard to find a big and good char coal grill here in germany. Big grills turned into gas outdoor cooking stations for 1-5k euros.And what we grill? Sausages, any kind of meat, pure or marinaded. Potatoes, really good are the small fresh ones, in kitchenfoil with butter and spices. And for dessert, a grilled banana or apple or pear. Sometimes honey-coated pineapple. Or I bake a small cake on my grill. Awesome flavour this smoked cakes.

It's gonna be summer time soon, so I'll share my favorite recipe for direct grilling: Thyme filled pork steak. First, get a nice, tender piece of pork with lot's of marbeling throughout. Cut into it for a nice thin slice (quarter to one third of an inch) but don't cut all the way through, stop at about half an inch to the bottom! Then make another cut at the same thickness of the first cut, this time going all the way through. This leaves you with a cute little "pocket" of meat. If you have a good butcher, they might do those pockets for you, otherwise you'll need a pretty sharp knife and it can help to stick the meat into the freezer for half an hour or so to make it easier to cut. Once you have these pockets, everything else is pretty easy. Get some good mustard (and maybe mix it with some tabasco if you like a little spice) and thinly spread it inside and all over the pockets, season with salt, pepper and garlic powder and let it marinade for at least an hour or over night. Then, before putting them on the grill, fill the pockets with thinly sliced onions and lots of fresh and soft thyme (or some stalks of the gnarly woody stuff if you really have to, but you will have to pick those out before eating whereas you can just leave the soft thyme in there and eat it together with the meat). You can really pack quite a lot of thyme in there, don't be afraid to go a little crazy. Grill on both sides until the meat is cooked (check the insides of the pockets, as soon as the meat in there isn't raw any more you are good to go)

The best thing ever are potatoes wrapped in foil and placed directly in the coal! They need about 20 minutes (small ones) and they are soooo good! And of course I love Bratwurst.

You have to try out avocadosalad, which means: 2 avocado; 1 tomatoe, 1 bell pepper + every vegetable you want and a sour vinegar-based dressing. Important: let the avocado stone in the bowl to keep the avocado looking nice and green. We eat it often and I'm always happy when my dad makes it. It's not a typical german food but I love it. And have you ever tried Mäusespeck? It's like a long marshmallow in pink and yellow. I think it's better then the normal, white marshmallows, but my brother hate it. I don't understand that, but actually, he doesn't like any type of marshmallow.

Yea, the picture of the German grill looked quite like it looks when my friends and I have a Grillparty :D But we also like to put grill-cheese on it (don't know if that's a thing in the US?). You can buy those in the supermarket. Also filling zucchini, mushrooms or paprika with cheese and spices, wrapping them in tin foil and then grilling them. Really delicious. Damn. Now I'm hungry.

For me it is really similar to the food in the video. But we have a lot of salads depending on the amount of persons. Friends are comming together and every one is contributing something. We are mostly eating mixed salad with tomatos, paprica, corn, ... but we also make potato or noodle salads. Sometimes we have some special ones with Asian recipes, too. And when everything is grilled we are roasting some bread and eat it with herb butter. :) But grilled vegetables are great, too! :P
@olgahein43849 жыл бұрын
I think you described the german Grillparty very well, at least that's what we do a lot with friends. But: everyone brings something, some meat, sausages, salads, bread, etc. Usually we grill everything, and everyone can eat whatever he/she wants, but if everyone brings something, there is a nice variety of food. With my family it is different, they have russian ancestors, but I don't know, if it is traditional russian. We make Grillparties at birthdays in summer (like mine, yay!). The guests don't bring anything. Usually we grill porkmeat, it needs to be cut into pieces and my mom makes a marinade the day before of mayonnaise, onions, salt and pepper and some other stuff. About one hour before it comes to the grill, them meat is put on metalsticks. My father is usually at the grill, before the guests arrive. He puts the sticks on the grill (without this "Metallrost") and gives a little bit of beer on the meat. It is important, that the grill is hot, but no fire. Usually he is halfway finished with grilling, when the guests arrive. Sometimes he also grills fish, or better said, it is more like "räuchern". However, as russians they have all kinds of other food: boiled potatoes and noodles or rice, russian salads like "Olivier" (with boiled eggs, sausage, boiled potatoes, boiled carrots, mayonnaise, etc) or "Winigret" (not sure if I wrote that right), and at least two other salads, there are different sauces and dips, usually there is also other meat and fish, that is made in the kittchen as alternative, etc, etc. All that food is needed, because there is also litres of wodka and wine. I just love my families Grillparties.

I'm an Australian living in Germany and we have another take on it. Generally we do steak, sausages, prawns and such... we marinade everything ourselves but mostly use a dry rub. Our side dishes are usually green salad, baked potatoes, tomato and eggplant bake and so on... All our German friends find our BBQ traditions really odd, but when we go over to a German's place for a BBQ, it's just not as appealing for me for some reason.... mainly because they insist on dousing everything in vinegar.....
@pummysworld3697 жыл бұрын
Of course, there have several vegetables to be on the grill. As alternative main dishes, not as a side dish. Zucchini, bell peppers, aubergines and what the garden gives you at the moment. Potatoes, just baked in hot ashes, or covvered with an aluminum sheet. A lot of veggies can be cooked wrapped in aluminum, even green beens. Nowadays you have to expect at least one vegetarian among you guests, and, if you do it well, everybody enjoys vegetables. Very good is the Bavarian "Steckerlfisch", fish on a stick, grilled... You can get that at most bavarian fests...
