Immediately after my daughter got married she & her husband went to grad school in a different state. She told me their first argument came when they went grocery shopping and chicken was on sale(offer). The price of chicken, which they eat a lot, was much higher in their new location. When it was on sale she began putting multiple packages in the grocery cart. Her husband didn’t agree with what she was doing. She told him this is how my mother shops. The next time chicken was on sale her husband started putting packages in the cart-14 of them to be exact and told her that her mother had the right idea…you eat out of your freezer!!! She & I are very math minded and know our prices. They have 3 little ones & being aware of prices and sales allows them to eat well and stick to a budget.

I'm a single person limited income. I do a sinking found for 2 x's a year a pantry stock up. I do have a small chest freezer, I freeze bread, fruit and vegetables. I set myself a monthly budget for offers and sales. Needed items each month goes on a list. I feel less stress doing it this way.

I don't stock up, I live in NYC and have everything within walking distance. I switched from shopping at Whole Foods to shopping at Aldi and that saved me so much money, I learned from you to meal plan and budget and that saved me even more. This month (January) I spent a third of what I spent last January on food, even with the crazy price increases. I am still fine tuning my budgeting and meal planning to save even more.

Reflective- I do childcare and have 6 kids to feed, live out of town. I stock up on canned items, paper products, cleaning items. Cereal, oats, rice, dried beans. Some convenience items- bagged dry soups, instant potato meals, rice meals so if I need a quick meal with no effort I can use those and it keeps us from eating out. Some days a can of tuna, GF cream of mushroom and a box of GF Mac and cheese made in to tuna casserole keeps us from eating out. And if it snows or we are flooded in- I have multiple shelf stable meals. My pantry is probably heavier than if I lived in town. I buy cleaning and paper products in bulk because I don’t like purchasing those on a regular basis.

Being in a Gulf State in the South (USA) and having been hit by multiple hurricanes, we keep at least a month's worth of water (we had to go close to a month without safe drinking/usable water, due to all waterplants being destroyed during the first of two hurricanes in 6 weeks) and stores could not open due to damage. We keep a stock of canned goods, medical supplies, pet supplies, flashlights and batteries, charcoal (for the BBQ), etc. for that very reason, too. 6 months out of the year, we're in hurricane season, so things I do not stock up on are frozen meats and vegetables. I've lost too many freezer fulls of those items due to lost electricity for up to 23 days at a time. I keep my supplies scattered throughout the house in case one area is damaged by the roof coming off in an area during a hurricane/tornado. It's always a good idea to have some sort of backups in your home, based on your area and mother nature's wrath. Stay safe!

Hello 👋 I'm a retired truck driver. In the early days road trucks just wasn't equipped to carry much food or anything. Progress in the years turned road trucks into mini rolling homes with enough room for microwave, fridge and other small appliances. I stocked up on can goods and basics as the cost to dinn in is outrageous today. On occasion I would eat in but not much. I had to learn right away to live frugal in those years or else I'd be working just to eat .

Hello! Just on a money savings goal. I buy ahead what i know we'll eat. Pastas, peanut butter, veggies, diced tomatoes, dry beans, seasonings, coffee & tea, etc. It cuts down my weekly budget. So if i buy the more expensive things one part of the month, it's easy to get through the rest of the week, in my house. It's just me & my partner. So we keep our bill probably between $40-60 between one and two weeks. I also at most, only keep 3 months of stock to make sure my pantry is a "working" pantry. I have been making a mindful effort to use all the food in my fridge before I go & buy more, which has helped *exponentially*. I also repackage my food when I get home. Chop the produce, condense veg/fruit together, regularly clean out the fridge at least once every 2 weeks. It's usually the condiments that get me :D Future goals, would love to have a 2nd freezer & larger pantry. I really hate going to the store. Any time I can just make a pasta + sauce + spinach or something simple is a total win. Savory oats, etc. Thanks for all your hard work in helping to give us great tips!

My husband works for a wholesale food distributor, and sometimes we are able to get things for free or really cheap from his work. The other day he brought home a 12kg bag of organic flour which was free because the bag had a big rip in it (easily fixed with tape), and couldn't be sold to customers. We have recently started baking our own sourdough, which ends up being super cheap. A small sourdough loaf at our local bakery costs AUD$9.50, so we are saving a fortune there. We bake a couple of loaves at a time, slice them, freeze them and use them for toast.

Storage and longevity dates and rotation - those are the critical things I considered when buying items. I did buy mylar bags and oxygen absorbers to take care of some things that will do better stored that way. Otherwise, I am pretty much through stocking up on basics. I am in the use and rotate mode. I replace what I use and I put it behind the older ones. I have very limited storage and if I cannot see what is on hand, it will go bad. My job is to not waste anything. If I can tell that I will not get some things used up before their best buy date - like tomatoes or any other acid based item that does not allow it to be held for years, I will donate those items for someone else to use while they are still good.

Stocking up ++ on coffee beans, which freeze well, as does lurpak. Instant nescafe, yorkshire teabags, soap powder, toiletries, tinned meats, frozen meats, aluminium foil, loo roll, pretty much everything that could get very expensive this year. I'm not so concerned about cheap items but I do have a few on hand. I'm mindfully concentrating on off setting the mahoosive price increases coming to the UK soon, (threatening to go up by 30%), by having the higher cost items already in my pantry, if that makes sense, lol

I know this might not suit everyone but maybe stocking up on paper plates, it saves on hot water and washing liquid. In the UK you can buy 100 paper plates for £2. Obviously you can't use for every meal but definitely a plus for any preps you may have. I would also suggest adding a thermous flask as there is often boiled water left over for tea making ect but if you boil a kettle putting the excess newly boiled water into a flask will keep for 12 hrs and will save on electricity re-boiling the kettle.

We have a "Wet Season" and our town can be cut off, stopping trucks bringing in supermarket refills. We also get cyclones and this leads to panic buying and supermarket shelves are stripped of goods at a rapid rate. We are a retired couple. Our son lives with us when not at work. He flies to work for two weeks and then flies home for two weeks. We have a very large dog and we have chooks. We always make sure we have a months worth of animal feed stored. We were very glad of this last year when we had two floods within 8 weeks of each other. We keep extra ingredients in the pantry to keep us going. I purchase loo paper by the carton online, and have never had an issue when the supermarkets have been stripped. We store extra LPG to keep our hooded barbeque going and our three way fridge in the event of a power outage. We dont have a large home, but we do have a three bay shed, so plenty of extra storage space.

Buy a canner! I’m a single 53 year old woman. I have canned up 110 jars of meats and bone broths this month alone. Any time there is a sale, I buy a ton. I don’t have room in my fridge or freezer so canning it frees up my prime real estate in cold storage. I keep it in a cool dark room. I converted a bedroom into a pantry. Black out curtains and keep it cool. These canned goods will last 10 years or more. I’ve also done Brussels sprouts, potatoes, stews, soups, beans, salsas, etc. I grow a garden year round because I’m in a rural area in the high desert of Texas ❤

One of the things that is a huge blessing here in Northern California, USA is the number of hours of sunlight we get. Last year, my roof-top solar panels generated more electricity than I used in a year's time, so my freezers are essentially free to run. I stocked up on a lot of food because I thought my son and his family would be here with me for an urgent time, but that did not happen, so I have a considerable stockpile of food that will see me though a while to come, provided that there is not some calamity. I was at my parents in France last week and could see that the price are pretty high but not at our level yet. France has different taxes for the first necessity food items that help to keep the price down. I could also see that people were very mindefull of what they bought no more overflowing cart everywhere like when I was younger. We live in rural WV, USA, in the mountains. Occasionally we get a good bit of snow and ice, so not incredibly worried about being snowed in for weeks, but it's happened in some years over mine and my parents lifetimes. Also, husband is a government worker, and we have 4 kids, on one income. So anytime there's talk of a government shutdown, that would directly affect any income coming in. So we honestly stock up on everything. We buy a full beef at a time, and have good contacts at local stores, butchers, and discount stores for other meats, snacks, pantry items. Our energy prices haven't changed all that much for our area, so we have 2 fridges, 2 freezers, and we make sure to rotate through so as not to waste things. We also can a good bit, so our pantry is a mix of home canned and store bought. Also with having four kids and a husband who works long hours, sometimes it's nice to not have to go to the store for awhile, and make do with what we have.

We are watching local farmers and they are all struggling from excessive heat and lack of rain. Even our local Amish added a heated tunnel to raise tomatoes in, and start them earlier, after 2 years of frosts in late June. Now they are watering regularly and this week, we saw one large pond being dug on the property of an Amish family that makes a lot of sales from a farm stand on their property. Our corn should have been knee high by the 4th of July, this year its just past knee high now , August 6th. Many farmers are only just getting their first hay cutting. Usually they're at their second now. So expect corn, beef, chicken, feed, and fuel all to be expensive by the fall, and higher next year.

Your video truly addresses the complexities of addressing how best we individually can be frugal and yet keep stocked up on needed items. So many variables from one family to another in terms of food preferences, seasonal costs and availability, storage space and costs of electricity and automobile fuel etc. I stock up more in winter because of bad driving conditions and I have ample pantry storage and a deep freezer. But living alone I need to be mindful not to overbuy perishable items if they don't freeze well. For example, if I buy a large jar of mayo, it will go bad before I can use it up.

I keep one butter and when I get down to 2 sticks, I buy another. With hairspray, toothpaste, deodorant, when I start my last one I begin to look for sales on those items and buy when they go on sale. I keep an array of canned meats, fish, and vegetables, especially low sodium. I buy some when on sale but do not go overboard. I also have a nice assortment of dried beans because we love them and they cook quickly in my Instant pot at a good savings. I keep tinned evaporated milk, a shelf stable milk and dry milk and freeze a small bit of fresh milk to keep me from running out for just milk. I keep 1 extra flour and 1 extra sugar and always an extra box of tea.

Here in rural Indiana our eggs are not too expensive...around $3.20 now. I still have several gallon bags of frozen eggs that I use for baking. Our neighbors who have chickens and ducks are very generous when they are swamped with eggs in the summer! We just stocked up on beef. We got 1/4 of a cow, and it fills our small chest freezer. The beef is locally grown, locally butchered and comes out to about $2.40 a pound on average, cheaper even than Aldi's or Walmart prices.

I'm looking to start making bread again as our affordable bread isn't brilliant here in Australia. All great advice here - being mindful, planning and pre-emptive purchases can make SUCH a big deference. For example, here 4L of canola oil is now $32 - but it goes on special regularly at half price and that's a BIG saving!! Olive oil (which I mostly use) also goes on half price, as does dish detergent, toiletries, treats - everything except the essential basics like milk, butter flour!! The retailer's play us all like fiddles so it's empowering to play the game back and have a win! Some things I find are worth paying a bit more for BTW - good pasta, for example, but even that is always on special somewhere. I bought some rice at half price, thinking 'rice is rice' and I was wrong! Won't make that mistake again - and it was a big bag, of course!

Love your channel!❤❤ I made homemade tortillas for the first time last night. Super easy and so much healthier than expensive store bought kind that use canola, safflower or any other bad oil along with additives. Saw a great KZbin video from Under the Median that made it look so easy! My husband loves burritos and we go thru tortillas fast. Used non gmo organic flour and organic avocado oil. I also make my own mayonnaise which takes less than 2 minutes( key is using immersion blender). When I read what was put in Best Foods and Kraft Mayo I about died. Soybean oil, sugar etc…so inflammatory. I use organic avocado oil I buy in bulk and use organic eggs from a friend of ours. I will also add a garlic clove and lemon juice to make it more like a aioli. Saves us so much money and our health. We are blessed to live near the coast in California so heating and cooling costs are nothing compared to Europe. We love sleeping in a cold house and use heater only to take the chill off . So appreciate the hard work and consistency you put into your videos 😊

Could say I've stocked on most I use also spices. If you have a vacuum sealer as flour is most of the time in a paper bag you can seal it. Have done this with a lot of things including spices. Have seen things I purchased last year have increased by over 40% this year. Have also seen special offers I would purchase in Aldi and Lidl have not come back in store since last year. Have seen shops that sell the branded item and shrinkflation has hit these. Seeing quite a few own brand items gone from a lot of stores. I had a small freezer as well as a main, decided last year to change the small ones use, so no longer have the electricity cost for it.

I try to keep a well stocked pantry for just the two of us but do also keep a large selection of alternative flours to help bake for my daughter and grandchildren who have Celiac. Here in the US, those specialty foods rarely go on sale but they are so much higher than their gluten-full counterparts to begin with that even then they are still expensive.

Our energy prices aren’t too terribly bad yet - east coast USA - except for heating oil so our house is definitely cooler this winter. I stock up on meat when it goes on sale because I do have a big freezer. We have a grocery chain that has what they call a can can sale twice a year. I do stock up on canned veggies, beans, tomatoes, tuna, and soup during those sales. I do agree, that eating in season is good for your budget. I also agree that stocking up on those items that really don’t go on much of a sale is pointless. Thank you for another great video.

I live in Southern California, US, we are a one house income and have one child. We are set financially because we are pretty frugal, stay within a budget, and own one fully paid car, no credit card debt and rent a small 750 square foot duplex to keep what we pay low, as rents in the city we live in are extortionate! Our energy costs have been increasing quickly and food prices have gone up considerably because of this. We have a chest freezer and we always stock up on frozen lunch items for my husband who works from home and wants something quick and variety. We go to Costco and stock up on meat, like chicken, pork and ground turkey. Frozen vegetables. We stock up on pantry basics, like canned diced tomatoes, canned beans, and refried beans. Canned meats, spam and tuna. We have a stock of dried foods, beans/lentils and a 20lb bag of rice, and a 10lb bag of flour for baking. The price of eggs has shot up through the roof as well as dairy items, like cheese and butter. Cooking Oils have gone up a lot so we always buy the big 64 oz containers. This all lasts us a long time until we need replenishing of said items. We even cut down our eating out to once a week because it is just getting so expensive. I really enjoy your videos as they keep me in check on not to overspend and be content with what we have.

Gluten free also. I was feeling very rich the other day when I went to the grocery store, apparently, because I bought eggs $4.88 and a loaf of gluten free bread $6.70 a loaf at Aldi. To stretch my bread- I freeze 2 slices in a sandwich bag, put it all back in the bag and freeze it. That way I can use occasionally. If I am traveling to my daughter’s for example (5 hours away) we make sandwiches and take our meal with us for the drive. We buy beef a quarter of a beef at a time. Local farmer. Ohio USA

At the moment, the only things I would want to stock up on are things like tinned chopped tomatoes. My food cupboards have enough dried pulses (which will be cooked in the pressure cooker), pasta, rice and other carbohydrates to see me through for months! I do buy fresh fruit and veg, mostly from the market or Lidl. I want to use my small freezer mostly for prepared meals when I batch cook, so have worked out that, apart from some useful things like frozen peas, that is the best use for it. When I have gone through the stuff I have in stock, then I will replenish as necessary. I do have a few meat items that I have got on the yellow sticker prices (or, as I say, on the botulism counter). These will be used to make treats when something non-veggie is required to lift my spirits.

I agree with you that the energy cost of cooking dried beans can easily outweigh any savings over canned, UNLESS you use a pressure cooker. My 40yo Presto is nothing fancy - just has the weighted “wobbler” on top, but I use it almost every day, mostly for dried beans - lentils in 6 minutes, the toughest, dried-out garbanzos (chick peas) in 17, pintos or red beans in about 12. It makes it truly frugal to use dried beans. And I prefer the stove-top pressure cooker to an instapot, because if I lose power, it works just as well on a propane or butane camp stove.

You asked if any place had affordable energy prices. I live in Washington State, US and we have some of the cheapest electricity rates in the country. Hydroelectric dams generate our power-thank you Columbia and Snake Rivers and sorry for the salmon. However our food prices in many cases are higher than yours. Eggs and butter are almost out of reach. Here's my strategy for keeping my egg costs lower. First-no egg dependent main dishes like quiche or frittatas until the egg prices drop. Second, about 4 years ago our big box discount chain offered boxes of three packages each of dehydrated eggs. I bought enough to put into long term storage. Time to dig them out and check out the WW2 recipes from the UK. Also those old UK WW2 recipes often had eggless versions of things like steamed puddings. Finally, for baking I'm looking to vegan options as they have experience with egg replacements. Thank you for your videos.

When we find things on sale we'll stock up on butter and we stock up on chicken. (I don't eat red meat and neither does the housemate. My husband still does so when I find a good deal on red meat I get it for him and portion it up and get several meals out of it.) But to be honest, we haven't seen great deals on much lately. We stick with Aldi and Walmart. (Eggs were $4.99 a dozen this morning at Aldi! 😳) Both have their drawbacks. Occasionally, a major supermarket will have a really good deal on something, but not very often. But I'll keep searching. Thanks for another good vlog!

Really useful, thank you. For us, I look out for pulses, beans and especially pasta. I have a still growing teen son - when is it going to stop? He's just under 6ft 3"! - and pasta is a really good filler. Like you, I also find lentils useful to bulk out meals and make food stretch further. I do all my own baking so look out for flour, butter, sugar on offer, but that doesn't seem to happen very often. I did pick up some tinned tuna on offer this week and always look out for the meat which has been reduced and switch between pork or chicken or beef as needed. Where we live, it's sometimes possible to pick up cheap venison, pheasant and occasionally rabbit for the freezer, but whereas my OH and son really enjoy it, I don't and often find it a struggle to cook it, but then I don't eat much meat at all any more.

As a Brit in the Netherlands I stock up on joints of meat for roasting if we are ever in the car and visiting Belgium or Germany as they are only available here at Christmas unless I go to a butcher and special order which is $$. My local Turkish butcher sometimes has deals on chicken thighs per 3kg - great for curries and stews. This week 4 chickens for €10! But I don’t have the freezer space, and the meal plans for the next 2-3 weeks are in place to use up some pantry items that are past best before dates. I needed flour today and was surprised that there was a buy one get one free offer on that wasn’t in the weekly folder or listed online but hidden on the bottom shelf!
